Female Demon Ohyaku [DVD] [1968]

Synapse tackles another Japanese genre classic in high style with this impressive disc of Female Demon Ohyaku. The transfer offers a gorgeous letterboxed, anamorphic image that captures the film's rich black and white cinematography with an often stunning level of clarity and detail. The film's original Japanese language mono soundtrack is used here and it sounds fine. Newly translated English subtitles are also offered to accompany the film. In terms of extras, there is a collection of trailers for the three "Poisonous Seductress" series, a commentary track by Japanese film scholar Chris D. and an insert booklet with detailed liner notes on the history of Japanese female swordplay films (also by Chris D.). The commentary track is the most substantial of these, with Chris D. offering a steady stream of info about the genre, the cast and the filmmakers as well as some interesting criticisms of the film's storyline. The packaging adds one last nice touch -- the cover art is reversible and offers an alternative design that uses the film's original poster art on its flip side. All in all, this is an excellent disc and well worth the time for fans of vintage Japanese genre fare.

Female Demon Ohyaku
"The Legend of the Poisonous Seductress" saga begins with this bloody tale of an actress who seeks vengeance against her tormentors after being wrongly imprisoned. Ohyaku (Junko Miyazono) was just an innocent actress when she was accused of a crime that she didn't commit. Subsequently thrown into prison and brutalized by her fellow inmates at every turn, the once fragile girl is gradually transformed into a sword-wielding warrior whose back is adorned with a maniacal demon. Now, her blade clenched firmly in clinched fists, Ohyaku sets out on a violent quest to cut down anyone and everyone who ever dared cross her. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
