A mixed bag
Posted .I would recommend this to a friendI know this game like the back of my hand, I've played it as a kid and continued to pick it up and replay it later on. They tried to reboot the series a few years back and it was very poor indeed- in that reboot they included the original and managed to screw that up too by having it displayed on an ...arcade machine. With no way to zoom in or cut out the background. This remaster is a mixed bag, it's such an annoying mixed bag I don't even know how to feel so I'm gonna hit 3 stars. The good: It runs well, the original had small pauses between each screen you'd go to (the game had to load it into memory), this remaster cuts that down making it more smooth. The game doesn't seem to have any slow down (at least early on) and it features longer versions of the cutscenes that weren't in the Genesis/MegaDrive or SNES versions of the game. The remaster has a lot of settings, a rewind mode which you can turn off or limit to only so many uses, a number of screen effects and you can change the audio options to be more retro ...more on that later. It has OPTIONAL tutorials (you turn them on or off or can read some at your leisure) which will make this game a lot easier for newcomers as the controls take getting used to. Intuitive when you get the mechanics but it takes some learning The bad: The audio, this is probably the most glaring part of the whole thing and I want you to hear me out on this. The original game has only a few songs- mostly for tension or atmosphere. Otherwise the game is usually quiet with some ambient noises. The remaster keeps to this but, it plays some songs randomly. I know where and when these songs are supposed to be but out of nowhere it'd play one song, then another. The remastered audio is a mixed bag, some ambient sounds are way too loud and very grating. So instead of setting the mood, you're wincing and wondering why wildlife is louder than your gun. So use the retro audio, WELL, it's a mixed bag too! Some of the sounds and music seem to be from the Genesis version which is fine, other sounds and songs seem to be from another version of the game and it makes the whole thing super inconsistent. Controls are another baffling part here. The original on the Genesis/MD has controller options, so you can change them to suit yourself. This version? NOPE. You have more buttons that have redundant actions put to them, but you got no options. It's not even a remaster. It's a port that has some filter options, a rewind, and remixed audio. The visuals are 100% untouched. Another World got a remaster with proper updates to the visuals, the audio was mixed fine but this? It's the Amiga version with sounds from the Genesis put into it. So you're paying for the ability to play 1 game, emulated on a modern device, and the price it's going for new (at the time of writing this) seems a bit excessive for that. An eshop/PSN emulated version at a lower cost honestly would have been a better presentation for the cost. This isn't a case of console bias, I've played other versions and while I generally prefer the Genesis/Mega Drive one's audio? I don't really mind playing the others. This version just has issues that make it harder for me to recommend. I'll probably play it here and there since it's nice to have it handheld but my main version will still probably be the ones from the 90s. The rest: Agh, this is so frustrating. I love the game, Flashback is a great game it really is. It's inspired by a ton of things from the time, Blade Runner, The Running Man, and such. I'd love more people to play it but the remaster is a bit of a mixed bag and I don't know if I can recommend it easily since it's not a great representation of it. I want to say I'm picky here, but I've played other ports and while the audio mixing was different I wasn't this upset by it. I got it for 15 bucks so I'm not mad, just disappointed that this game, for the life of it, cannot get the attention it deserves. What it boils down to, this is a legal way to get the game and play it. Is it unplayable? No, it runs better than the originals to be sure in ways. Is the presentation wonky? A bit if you're a returning fan, if you're not? Maybe you'll be able to shrug it off. I fully admit that I could be blinded by being used to the game I've played for the last 20+ years.

This was one of the best Sci Fi games
|Posted .Owned for 2 months when reviewed.I would recommend this to a friendThis was a blast from the past for me that I needed to pick up when I saw it was out/updated somewhat. If you remember/loved the original for PC back in the day, get this one! I love how in general the Switch is giving me access to so many past games that I loved.

It is a very challenging game in this game causes a lot of deaths in your character which is similar to dark souls and you just have to re-try and re-try to figure out what you need to do

Flashback is right
|Posted .Owned for 1 week when reviewed.I would recommend this to a friendNice little retro platformer. Not super flashy, but does gives plenty of nostalgia with the pixelated fun abound in this adventure.
