    Synopsis

    Focus
Nicky has studied the science of human nature his whole life, and understands precisely how to earn anyone's trust, or fool them into never noticing he's stealing their watch, or wallet, or anything they might have that Nicky can sell. In the movie's opening sequence, he's eating at a New York restaurant when the gorgeous Jess approaches his table and asks him to pretend to be her boyfriend so that she can avoid a particularly determined guy at the bar who won't stop hitting on her. The two of them hit it off, but he quickly figures out that she's running a scam on him and soon turns the tables on her and her partner. Undaunted, Jess begs Nicky to teach her what he knows about the criminal life, and he brings her in on a plan to steal from as many people as possible during Super Bowl week in New Orleans. She turns out to be a natural, and quickly learns the ropes of this unscrupulous world. Nicky and Jess seem to be falling for each other, but Nicky's actions at the end of their New Orleans trip force Jess to reassess their relationship. Three years later, Nicky enters into a deal with Garriga (Rodrigo Santoro), a wealthy playboy who has a software program that will help his Formula 1 team triumph. Nicky agrees to help Garriga sell a fake version of the program to his competitors, but as the plan goes into motion he discovers Jess and Garriga are a couple. As old feelings complicate the new arrangement, Nicky must also contend with the no-nonsense Owens (Gerald McRaney), Garriga's head-of-security who openly distrusts Nicky. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

I faced something of a conundrum with Focus as I was really rooting for it and yet I'm wondering if I enjoyed the film more because it wasn't as all over the board as it seemed to be or if it's because it's genuinely pretty fun. There is also the case of Will Smith. Smith is one of those personalities I feel like I've known my entire life and that I've grown up with. And like many, I've acquired an affinity for the actor/rapper over the years and have been happy to support him in his mega-stardom and remain hopeful when he delivers bombs like After Earth. If anything, anyone who is, was or might still be a Smith fan was looking to Focus to redeem our hope in big Willie's style and get the guy back on track, back to where he needed to be both at this point in his life and career. For me, that was the aura surrounding this film and it felt good because Smith had never looked cleaner and the film had all the same slick edges to it that seemed to match Smith pound for pound in its style. Written and directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Crazy Stupid Love) these guys are the first ones in what seems like too long that actually know how to use Smith in what he does best. In Focus there are plenty of pretty people wearing what are no doubt outrageously expensive clothing in exotic locations, but it is the confidence of Smith not only in his appearance, but in the way he conducts himself and his ability to portray all of that effortlessly with a sense of cool to match that keeps him our main point of, well, focus. And so, despite being concerned I was coming at the film from something of a biased perspective (though really, I have no reason to) I can't help but feel it follows through on what it promised in that it's a stylish con man thriller in the vein of not only pulling one over on its characters, but the audience as well in that they're too self-aware to go for the "one con to end them all" scheme, but that they instead get away with as many twists and turns as they do while coming out unscathed with audiences who are seemingly hip to their game. In a movie that is so much fun to watch with characters so attractive and interesting one is literally unable to take their eyes off the screen.

Will Smith is a favorite actor of mine and has been for many years. It has been quite awhile since the audience has last seen Will Smith on screen as a lead, but he shows us why there's a science to getting people to trust you in the movie Focus. While at a restaurant, Nicky takes notice of Jess who is at the moment in the company of a very drunk individual. She comes over to Nicky's table and suddenly asks Nicky to pretend to be her boyfriend. They strike up a conversation and immediately Jess invites Nicky upstairs to hotel room. Just as things are about to get steamy, Jess's "husband" bursts in and claims he will shoot Nicky; too which Nicky replies that he has cancer. After Jess figures out that Nicky realizes what is really going on here, she later meets up with Nicky wanting him to teach her his skill. But there is so much more to being a con man. Will Smith does a fantastic job in his role as Nicky. He is cunningly clever and easily maneuvers his way in and out of schemes like there's nothing to it. His performance in this movie is a reminder of the Will Smith I enjoy watching in his movies. Great job. The Gorgeous and talented Margot Robbie does a nice job portraying Jess throughout the course of the movie. Jess is a fast learner, and she and Nicky begin to develop an attraction towards each other. And in terms of chemistry, Will Smith and Margot Robbie are ELECTRIC together on-screen. Rodrigo Santoro plays Garriga and does a good job, while Adrian Martinez stars in a supporting role as Farhad and does a really nice job. In terms of story there were a FEW times where the script felt uneven, but that did not stop me from enjoying the movie. The music that this movie has is also really likable. Each scene that has music playing in the background fits in really well with the scene it was being played during. Focus is not a slow movie by any means, but it is a good movie due to the lead actors (and chemistry between Will Smith and Margot Robbie), the humor, the surprises, and the quick change of scenery . And with all this being said, I consider the movie Focus to be A Good Experience

First and foremost Focus is more a drama than anything else, from the previews and trailers I could see where one would think that this maybe a action movie or at least offer up more action then it really does but that's not to say that without much action the movie crumbles. It doesn't. It's somewhat a slow burn, yet at the same time covering a large amount of time in a average runtime span. The movie goes along at a fairly quick clip thanks to well designed scenes filled to the brim with tension. If you ever wondered about the inner workings of a con and what makes a great con-artist Focus will probably be a good flick to check out. Will Smith and Margot Robie give great performances and the direction is tight and focused. A great twist ending and pleasant viewing experience make this one to check out.

One easy to miss, yet DON'T!

So different than any movie he's done and yes, well agree with first review, don't miss it. He has moved from the type of movie of the past to a new version of himself. ALL cast is excellent. Bought with minor expectations, so greatly exceeded those. Don't think you will go wrong at all, but be surprised to see a new version of one we've all known for so many years. EXCELLENT, kudo's to entire cast.

Its a charming film that needed to be advertised more, especially with Will Smith, as the lead. Its a sleeper hit and I enjoyed the sexy interplay between both characters and overall, sneaky storyline. Yes, you may want to watch this twice to catch the twists and turns before the love and happiness..lol

Before that abomination Suicide Squad was made Will Smith and Margot Robbie made this movie together. They have much better chemistry in this film and the movie is overall much better than their second outing together. Con artist Will Smith meets Margot Robbie and teaches her the tricks of the trade. Decent film and Margot Robbie is extremely attractive.

Great movie. Fun, smart and sexy. Psychology and the study of human behavior is central to this film. Not only do you see how the characters use their power of influence, persuasion and manipulation on others, but you also see how they themselves become victims of emotion, family, insecurities, vices and the need to be loved.

I could barely watch this one, in fact I didn't finish watching it at my first viewing because I was getting really upset with Will. I know it is just a movie but he played that character so well. My granddaughter had to let me know what was going on and after she told me what happened, I then watched it from the beginning and thoroughly enjoyed the whole movie and enjoyed the outcome.
