Be clear when purchasing Fortnite, you're purchasing entry into the Beta- a highly polished and fun Beta, but this may not be the totality of what will be released. You also need to be aware that Fortnite will be released as a free game sometime in 2018. Besides the early entry, you'll be getting a bunch of permanent bonuses that you won't receive if you wait. Of course, by "free," Fortnite will make its bones via microtransactions, which are already in place, but truly, I've felt no need to purchase anything to stay playing. Gameplay is both fun and a new spin on old things, but the flipside of this is with various styles in play, (3rd person shooting, base building, tower defense, harvesting resources, and vast card collecting system, as well as leveling every aspect within,) it can get complicated, and the tutorial in how these systems play together is lacking, very severely at times. Make sure you have access to the internet and your phone, as you're inevitably going to come across periods in the game that you'll want to have explained better. It should also be noted that the game is primarily considered a multiplayer affair, working co-op with up to 3 other players. That said, it is (in my first week of play,) easily enjoyed solo, and I have not failed any mission so far while playing solo. (Although some bonus objectives that are timed will be unachievable on your own. You can however, return to missions with others if you choose to solo initially to familiarize yourself). The game has a lighthearted, fun art style that I love. (Think Team Fortress 2 or even Overwatch). The various types of "Husks" (their version of zombies,) come in all flavors (my personal favorite are the basic ones, that have their faces pulled back over their head at the mouth, making it appear they're wearing hoodies,) with unique looks and abilities, and the game has no blood. If it wasn't for the complicated systems in place, it would be a safe game for younger gamers to play. All this said, I love this game, for its better or worse in Beta. I would absolutely recommend people to buy in, but be active in helping with feedback to make Fortnite hit its potential. Buying in and giving Epic Games (Gears of War, Unreal Tournament,) shouldn't be the only step in the puddle. A week after beginning play, I was sent a survey, which takes about 30-45 minutes to complete. Please, respond and be legit with your answers, as they ask you to be. This game has tons of potential, but there are some things still to be ironed out, those willing to buy in must be willing to give the necessary feedback. Fortnite has also managed to do something I thought near impossible; make harvesting and gathering fun. Just about everything can be broken up (or searched for,) into resources- plants, rocks, mailboxes, furniture, even the houses themselves. (A nod to humor of finding Bacon in bizarre places, like a toilet) and most give exactly what you'd expect. And that's a huge compliment. Exploring the map, where you can enter every home to scavenge, looking for survivors to add to your base, it's all made fun through this bright cartoon-styled art they've chosen. In almost every instance, I'll bypass timed bonuses just to explore every nook and cranny of the map. I look forward to see what else is in store for Fortnite, but it says a lot that I'd still play often if this ended up as the finished product.
