    Synopsis

    Gangster Squad
An elite police squad fights to save the city of Los Angeles from a power-hungry East Coast mobster in this gritty police-detective film set in the 1940s, and based on Paul Lieberman's seven-part Los Angeles Times series "Tales From the Gangster Squad." Jewish gangster Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) is a Brooklyn-born boxer-turned-L.A. kingpin whose brutal ambition has earned him the respect of the Italian mob. He's the kind of crime boss who dines with judges and police chiefs, but still isn't quite sure which fork to use when it comes time for the main course. Just when it begins to look like Cohen owns every cop in the city, however, LAPD Chief Parker (Nick Nolte) enlists honest cop Sgt. John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) to assemble a top-secret task force that will burn the vicious gangster's thriving criminal empire to the ground. With the help of his pregnant wife Connie (Mireille Enos), Sgt. O'Mara handpicks smooth-talking Sgt. Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), heroin-hating Officer Coleman Harris (Anthony Mackie), deadeye Officer Max Kennard (Robert Patrick), and brilliant wireman Officer Conwell Keeler (Giovanni Ribisi) for the task at hand. Joined by Officer Kennard's tough sidekick Officer Navidad Ramirez (Michael Peña) as they set out for their first job, the squad strike fast and hard at the core of Cohen's operation. Meanwhile, the charming Sgt. Wooters flirts with danger by starting an affair with Cohen's smoldering paramour Grace Faraday (Emma Stone). Shortly after learning that Cohen is plotting a power play that will cement his stronghold on the city, however, the squad are unexpectedly compromised, putting the lives of all of their families in danger and leaving them with little choice but to step up their efforts and target the ruthless gangster directly. Should they live to accomplish their mission, Sgt. O'Mara and his men will prevent L.A. from becoming a hive of criminal activity like Chicago or New York. But Cohen isn't going down without a fight, and if he falls, the entire city will feel the aftershock. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

I had been wanting to see this movie for a long a time, but never got around to it until seeing it in the store and having some store credit on hand. Sadly as with many movies, the preview was so much better. It was a good overall plot, with great actors, and great acting. What throws it off, though, ironically, are the fight scenes (shoot-outs, chases, and the occasional fist-fights) which were clumsy, awkward, and cheesy. I'll ignore unrealistic, because that usually adds to the quality of fight scenes. There was just very little style in them, but since it's based on a true story, maybe that's the point. I'm still not sad to own it, though.

The child doesn't quite measure up to the parents.

Gangster Squad is the unwanted child of The Untouchables and L.A. Confidential. 40's era L.A.? Check. Brutal mob boss? check. Ragtag group of misfit officers? check. The movie tries to take the best elements of both films and churn out it's own version. The problem is both of the previous films are superior and just because you try to copy the formula, doesn't mean you'll get it right. Having said that, if you are capable of ignoring the previous films or have never seen them, then Gangster Squad isn't too bad. If you love gangster movies, then you might want to check it out. Probably works best as a rental.

Don't waste your time renting this one. Go buy it. Definitely worth the price! Awesome mobster movie with cool cars, music, guns, and badguys. Simple story of take down the badguys the coolest way possible. Great visual effects where it counts, and well placed slowmotion throughout some intense gun fights. Some light hearted dialogue, but movie maintains a very serious tone. Lead character that you can easily cheer on, and a bad guy that is fun to hate. Into movies like: LA Confidential, The Untouchables, Road to Perdition, or even Goodfellas?... You will not be disappointed purchasing.

Can't stop seeing till end of the movie. Real adrenalin pumping action. Not very much use of computer graphics. Cinematography, lightings, art direction, costume, everything will bring to the that past year, where you can not differentiate between current time and the past time. The story line is so strong, you must agree that this is what call nail byeting moment. This is a must watch movie.

If you are in the mood for a hyper-stylized time waster, you can check this flick out. I had a great time with this movie, I didn't take it too seriously but most people did, that's understandable, it's a super flashy modern day Untouchables movie with great high class actors. Booming sound and beautiful digital picture will ease you right in with its charm.

I couldn't tell if this movie was going to be just another noir film with the old school LA crime scene, but this movie didn't come across as basic. This was a perfect cast for the old school crime genre of the movie and the storyline didn't disappoint either. If you're a fan of crime movies then I definitely recommend

Fun cast does their job with an investing story. Kind of a rehash of traditional LA cops and robbers story. Opens the question of difference between the two factions fighting each other without presenting any realistic answers. Illustrates the "winners" ultimately writing the history.

When I saw this film, I was reminded of SCARFACE, THE UNTOUCHABLES and L.A. CONFIDENTIAL. Though not a great film as those three (it wants to be like those, but can't reach them), it still holds your attention. And if you like gangster stories from the 30's, you'll love it. Just love all those tommy gun shootouts.
