Q: QuestionWhat's the difference between the Opal 1.0 (Sold online at other retailers) and the Opal 2.0 besides design?
Asked by CJ55.
- A:Answer Here are the major differences: - The casing corners are now rounded - The circle LED indicator has been replaced by "touch-sensitive" buttons on the front, as well as distinct word labels stating what the appliance is doing. This includes replacing the rear slider switch for cleaning with touch-button functionality in the front - The plastic ice bin no longer has holes along the rear-bottom; a spring-loaded hole has been added that opens only when the bin is slid all the way into the appliance, thereby preventing drips when fully removing the bin - Overall, the appliance does appear quieter, though that's more subjective - Biggy: when draining the water while cleaning, it completely dumps in about 30 seconds. Previous units took minutes to do this. I hope this helps!

Q: QuestionDo you leave it running all of the time or do you turn it off?
Asked by Ice.
- A:Answer There is an app you can use to set a schedule. We schedule ours to turn off after dinner, then have it turn on early in the morning so that there's plenty of fresh ice when we wake up.

Q: QuestionI've read numerous disastrous feedback for this unit on Amazon and I'm a bit worried about the number of defective units being sold. Has anyone owned this for more than a year without incident? Has anyone used the Geek Squad extended warranty for repairs?
Asked by Smitty.
- A:Answer There are a couple of versions of the Opal out there. I just picked up the Opal 2.0 which is an improved version and seems to work quite well. One way you can differentiate the units is the 2.0 version has touch button sensors on the front for the power, light and cleaning cycle. If you are really concerned you can get the extended warranty through Best buy. Although I have not used the extended warranty on this unit I have used it on my Samsung refrigerator's ice maker and found the service to be quite good.

Q: QuestionI assume the bin is not refrigerated. Does the ice melt in the bin and you have to dump out water if the ice goes unused, for example, if you are using it in an outdoor kitchen area where it’s not air conditioned?
Asked by DeeTee.
- A:Answer The bin is not refrigerated. The melted ice drains back into the water reservoir and is recycled. No need to dump any water.

Q: QuestionWe have had this ice maker for less than a month and it's worked great until today it's making a really loud noise. It sounds like the motor is struggling to run. Any suggestions?
Asked by mcorn.
- A:Answer Though it is kind of a pain, cleaning it weekly like the manual recommends really keeps the motor running smoother and the fan more quiet. When ours starts making louder noise, a thorough cleaning quiets it down. The machine will also last much much longer by doing the cleaning regularly.

Q: QuestionBrand new out of box, followed the setup instructions, did the cleaning cycle, drained. It went into Making Ice mode, but no ice. Then goes to defrost mode. It just keeps cycling between these modes and no ice. Unplugged overnight and still doing this.
Asked by Sophia.
- A:Answer Leave it plugged in. Mine did this & I thought it was broken, even called customer service. After just leaving it plugged in about 2-3 hours...... it started out of nowhere

Q: QuestionIs it better to use spring or distilled water or plain tap water?
Asked by Water.
- A:Answer Distilled water is best, because the others will leave mineral deposits on the machine.
