GE Profile Opal 2.0 24-lb. Portable Ice maker with Nugget Ice Production, Side Tank, and Built-in WiFi
Looking for the soft crunchy ice? Similar to that found at your favorite restaurants... this is it! We LOVE the ice this product produces! It’s so good - we no longer use our refrigerator ice maker except to fill ice chest on trips. This machine makes ice pretty quickly and has kept up with our demand without any problem (thus far).
For the less than perfect product points -these should be considered. 1) This machine is pretty loud when making ice. In a smaller home - this could be considered annoyingly loud. 2) There is no cooling mechanism to keep the ice cold once made. It will melt (some) and will be recaptured and made back into ice again. 3) This appliance is expen$ive! As much as we love the ice produced - when I say the cost we paid aloud - I question my priorities some. One can buy a full (used) refrigerator with ice maker at this price point.
My biggest concern (and reason for my title used ) is I have a long history in being disappointed in the quality of GE products. I have since moved to purchasing other brands when having that option. My normal go-to appliance manufacturers do NOT make this type of ice maker. So this is the ONE for me. An opportunity for GE to have made that one quality product that sways me to think they are on their A Game. Time shall tell. I hope this appliance meets my reasonable expectations. db
Love, love, love the Opal Ice Maker. It's not noisy as described by many. We waited two to three years to purchase because of the high price tag and complaints about noise. Our fridge ice-maker makes more noise than the Opal and if you are not in the kitchen, you don't hear it. We love the ice and it makes our drinks taste better. Wished it would keep the ice rather than melting and remaking but overall, we love the product and it is deserving of five stars. We would like to see the price come down but as for the product, it's great. Treat yourself today and get yours! You will be pleasantly surprised!

Best ice maker ever!!
Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed.
This icemaker is amazing!! It’s connects to WiFi to my phone so I can see if anything is wrong, or turn it on/off from my app. If you buy it, you definitely need to purchase the one with the extra water tank though. We refill the extra tank every day. To refill the regular reservoir you have to remove the ice bin and pour the water under it. My kids and I absolutely love it, the nugget ice is super soft, and crunchy!! The only downside is the price. But I hope it lasts a long time for over $600!!
Although this ice maker does make a little noise, it is about as quiet as the ice maker in our refrigerator. I love the soft crunch ice! It seems to make drinks seem colder and is easy on our teeth. Cleaning is easy and we have the machine set via Bluetooth to turn on and off. Very easy to use!
If you’ve made it far enough to look at a review of this product, I can tell you need this in your life. Besides the very minor drawbacks mine has run flawlessly and I’ve enjoyed having it in my kitchen. Ok the drawbacks real quick, the bucket isn’t refrigerated, ice melts constantly. You’ll need to use your scoop and “pick at it” every once in a while to get it producing again. Lastly, it’s warm. I have it in a corner with two sides closed off and it gets kinda warm behind it. Bear in mind and just be cognizant. Buy it, you’re gonna love it.
P.S. Use cold refrigerated filtered water.
I went to a get together and saw this ice maker. I read a lot of reviews, most were good, but knowing some one who had it and really liked it was all I needed. It did not disappoint! I’ve had it now for about a month. Sonic ice whenever I want it! My best purchase this summer!
It costs much more than other ice makers. But as my grandfather told me growing up you get what you pay for.
We have had the Opal 2.0 for about 6 weeks and we love it.
Some people say it is too loud. However, I do not agree with that. We keep it in the kitchen and we have an open floor plan home. It does not bother us at all while in the living room.
A HUGE PRO is you can connect it to wifi and create schedules for it to come on and off.
Only con was s that it holds about 3 pounds of ice. I wish it could hold a little more. We bought a triple walled ice bucket. We put some in that when the Opal gets full.
So far so good!! I buy Sonic and Zaxby’s ice by the bag ... at least 2 a week.
Read all of the instructions before you start.
When I started making ice it ran water for a minute or so and I was a little concerned. Not to worry ice started falling shortly after. The kids could not wait, like a good mom, I let them have the first scoop.
We started making ice about 5:30 pm yesterday and by 11:00 am today out ice bin in the freezer is full. Not to mention how much we have eaten.
Straight out of the bin it is the perfect soft ice. Out of the freezer it is hard, (same as the bagged ice after you freeze it) my recommendation is to fill your cup and leave it for about 10-15 mins and it will soften up some.
A:AnswerHere are the major differences:
- The casing corners are now rounded
- The circle LED indicator has been replaced by "touch-sensitive" buttons on the front, as well as distinct word labels stating what the appliance is doing. This includes replacing the rear slider switch for cleaning with touch-button functionality in the front
- The plastic ice bin no longer has holes along the rear-bottom; a spring-loaded hole has been added that opens only when the bin is slid all the way into the appliance, thereby preventing drips when fully removing the bin
- Overall, the appliance does appear quieter, though that's more subjective
- Biggy: when draining the water while cleaning, it completely dumps in about 30 seconds. Previous units took minutes to do this.
I hope this helps!
A:AnswerThere are a couple of versions of the Opal out there. I just picked up the Opal 2.0 which is an improved version and seems to work quite well. One way you can differentiate the units is the 2.0 version has touch button sensors on the front for the power, light and cleaning cycle. If you are really concerned you can get the extended warranty through Best buy. Although I have not used the extended warranty on this unit I have used it on my Samsung refrigerator's ice maker and found the service to be quite good.
A:AnswerThough it is kind of a pain, cleaning it weekly like the manual recommends really keeps the motor running smoother and the fan more quiet. When ours starts making louder noise, a thorough cleaning quiets it down. The machine will also last much much longer by doing the cleaning regularly.
