What to expect with Data Recovery.

step 1

Meet with an Agent.

Bring your device or drive to your appointment and an Agent will diagnose your data loss. There is a $49.99 charge for this initial service.

step 2

Get an estimate.

If your recovery is fairly simple, we'll do it in store for an additional $200. If it's more complicated, we'll send your device to Geek Squad City for a deeper diagnosis and cost estimate (see chart below).

step 3

Recover your data.

We have the expertise, tools and facilities to handle everything from simple file deletion to recovering data from a hard drive with physical damage.

step 4

Receive your data.

After successful recovery, your data will be shipped back to your store on an external hard drive. You can provide us with your own drive, or we'll include one at an additional cost.

Data Recovery Q&A

What kinds of drives and devices do you recover data from?

If it holds data, we will take it. A list would be too long to compile, but it includes all makes and models of laptops, desktops, hard disk drives, camera systems, SD cards, DVRs, flash devices and voice recorders (mobile devices excluded).

Can Geek Squad recover password-protected files?

Yes, if you provide us with the password.

How does my device qualify for in-store data recovery service?

Our in-store data recovery services are for units that fall under the Level 1 scope of work only. We will attempt to recover your deleted photos, music and files from a working drive, or data that was lost because a drive was reformatted. There is a chance your unit will require higher levels of data recovery service and we cannot guarantee your unit will qualify for Level 1 in-store service.

What do you need to recover my data?

Technically, we need only the physical hard drive or storage media. If the data is on a drive in a computer or other device, schedule a reservation at your local Geek Squad Precinct and an Agent will remove the hard drive or storage media for you. Also, if you can provide a list of the specific files you are looking for, it will help us ensure we recover what you need, but we can start the recovery without it.

When will I receive my recovered data?

Data recovery is tricky and depends on the exact device that failed and the nature of the failure. The time it takes to recover files can vary as much as the price does.

What will my recovered files be saved on when I get them back?

Once we recover your files, we save them to an appropriate external drive. You can supply your own drive in advance, or we will provide you with one at an additional cost.

How do I back up my data to prevent this from happening again?

You can back up your data on a separate type of media (such as an external hard drive or USB flash drive) or back it up online using cloud storage. Using both provides extra protection. Consider backing up your personal data once a week and backing up business data on a daily basis. Most backup methods allow you to schedule automatic data backups as often as you want.

What sorts of data can be recovered?

We attempt to save any and all data, including songs, photos, files and more.
