Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson star as a quartet of Manhattan-based "paranormal investigators". When their government grants run out, the former three go into business as The Ghostbusters, later hiring Hudson on. Armed with electronic paraphernalia, the team is spectacularly successful, ridding The Big Apple of dozens of ghoulies, ghosties and long-legged beasties. Tight-lipped bureaucrat William Atherton regards the Ghostbusters as a bunch of charlatans, but is forced to eat his words when New York is besieged by an army of unfriendly spirits, conjured up by a long-dead Babylonian demon and "channelled" through beautiful cellist Sigourney Weaver and nerdish Rick Moranis. The climax is a glorious sendup of every Godzilla movie ever made-and we daresay it cost more than a year's worth of Japanese monster flicks combined. Who'd ever dream that the chubby, cheery Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man would turn out to be the most malevolent threat ever faced by New York City? When the script for Ghostbusters was forged by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, John Belushi was slated to play the Bill Murray role; Belushi's death in 1982 not only necessitated the hiring of Murray, but also an extensive rewrite. The most expensive comedy made up to 1984, Ghostbusters made money hand over fist, spawning not only a 1989 sequel but also two animated TV series (one of them partially based on an earlier live-action TV weekly, titled The Ghost Busters. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

      Classic in brilliant blu-ray-love it

I won't get caught in the main synopsis of the movie, I'm guessing you know the story and the actors. If not you should be asking your self where have you been the last twenty years or lets get into it! Video Quality on this release is in full 1080p using the MPEG-4 codec on a BD-50 (50 gigabyte dual-layered Blu-ray Disc). This is a great catalog release. It is so refreshing to see a studio not attempt tweaking the original image with digital noise reduction and edge enhancement. This is a faithful to the source transfer. Clarity and resolution is where this transfer shines, all the little signs, switches, knobs and so forth are all clearly defined displaying an excellent depth of field. Colors are nicely saturated and accurate displaying good natural hues. As for the Bonus Materials: these are presented in Standard Definition 480i and High Definition 1080i with Dolby Digital 2.0 sound. * BD-Live - Keep in mind that BD-Live requires the user to be on a "Profile 2.0" capable Blu-ray Disc Player and connected to the Internet to access online content via the studio (in this case Sony). Once online you can access content such as downloadable trailers for other Sony Blu-ray Disc release upcoming and already available. Title specific content in this case is actually included. 2 different Ring tones are available which are just dialogue from the film. Standard rates apply to get these I'm sure, nothing is 100% free these days. * "Cinechat" - This BD-live application allows viewers to chat with friends and family while watching the film. A easy to understand tutorial is included. * "Slimer Mode" is a Blu-ray exclusive feature that is using Bonus View which requires the user to be on a "Profile 1.1" or higher capable Blu-ray Disc Player. If you are capable of it, this is worth the time to watch all the way through. A neat "Ghostbusters" border frames the film while it's playing; at the same time a Picture-In-Picture track plays interview clips featuring the cast and crew looking back at the production. It is complemented with additional still photographs and behind-the-scenes video. A pop-up trivia track is also inserted into the mix, showcasing interesting facts about the film and its shooting locations. * "Blu-Wizard" - A BD-Java feature that will allow viewers to create their own play list of special features by selecting only those of interest. Once activated, a pop-up marker indicates when that particular feature is available to view. Audio Commentary - Director Ivan Reitman is joined by co-writer/actor Harold Ramis and associate producer Joe Medjuck. It is unfortunate that they weren't able to update the commentary (originally recorded in 1999 for the DVD release) with thoughts from Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, or Sigourney Weaver. This is very informative track but unfortunately it comes across as dry. Opcional subtitles are included. Scene Cemetery" (9 minutes - SD) - This is a collection of 10 deleted scenes that while fun to see in their own right aren't missed in the film. * "1984 Featurette" (9:45 - SD) - This is a fun vintage featurette shot for the original 1984 release. Featuring behind-the-scenes footage and short interviews with cast and crew talking about the various aspects of making this beloved movie. * "Cast and Crew Featurette" (10:53 - SD) -This is a short 11 minute featurette originally recorded for the 1999 DVD release. It is a collection of interviews with Ivan Reitman, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis talking about the film and its impact in general. * "SFX Team Featurette" (15:22 - SD) - This is a panel discussion with the original F/X team. They discuss their experience of working on the film. * "Multi-Angle Featurettes" (SD) - This is broken into three sections: "Spook Central Exploding" (2:49), "She's A Dog" (2:00), and "Crossing the Streams" (1:23). Here you can watch the rough video and animation work in before-and-after stages from three particular scenes. * "Storyboard Comparisons" (SD) - Also broken into three sections: "Slimer" (2:13), "Dogs Drag Dana" (2:09), and "Atop Spook Central" (2:04). you can watch the hand-drawn storyboards and compare them to the film's finished cut. * "Ecto-1: Resurrecting the Classic Car" (15:37 - HD) - Sony and the filmmakers had the hero car restored to its original glory for the promotion of "Ghostbusters: The Video Game". Interview clips include Dan Aykroyd and the talented crew of people who worked on the refurbishment of the 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor Ambulance. The real treat is seeing the process of breaking down the car and building it back up to look better than it ever has. Once it is restored Dan Aykroyd was invited to see the Ecto-1 in all it's glory and it is a pleasure seeing the genuine joy he displays at being reunited with the old girl. "Making of Ghostbusters: The Video Game" (11:18 - HD) - A promotional fluff piece for the video game has the cast and creators sharing their thoughts about the game and its storyline. Brief clips of the video game are interspersed throughout. The game looks like a fun trip down memory lane. The graphics look authentic to the "Ghostbusters" films. "Ghostbusters Garage: Ecto-1 Gallery" (HD) - This is a beautiful slide show highlighting the restoration process, whilst Elmer Bernstein's music plays in the background. "Ghostbusters: The Video Game Preview" (1:43 - HD) - Simply this is the trailer for the now available video game. Theatrical Trailers (HD) - A collection of previews in HD `The Da Vinci Code: Extended Cut,' `Close Encounters of the Third Kind,' `Men in Black,' `Fired Up!,' `Paul Blart: Mall Cop,' `So I Married an Axe Murderer,' and `You Don't Mess With the Zohan'. To me this is a unbeatable deal on Blu Ray. don't listen to the person who said it looks bad. that person isn't being honest with you.. the picture and sound looks great on this Blu-Ray release. i am just glad i added it to my collection Ghostbusters + Blu-ray = awesome

      Best movie ever, Horrible Blu-ray

First of all I love this movie. In my opinion this the one of the best comedies ever made if not the best. It holds up even today. The jokes are still funny. They didn't become dated or over used. I'm saying lines right along with the movie and I haven't watched it in 15 years. Best movie ever! I was so excited to hear it was coming out on Blu-ray. Finally one of the greats in Hi-Def. I bought it the day it came out along with the video game too. But I put it in the player and hated it. IT LOOKS HORRIBLE!!! The DVD looks better. It is not Hi-Def what so ever. Why does Sony, the inventor of the technology, put out such substandard products. I mean admit it or not PS3 sucks! I used to own one before I sold it I should know. The games suck and so do the graphics. The fact that it is a Blu ray player doesn't even save it because that is substandard too. Now this. They just took the DVD version and threw it on a Blu ray and charged twice as much for it. They didn't clean it up at all. They didn't do anything to it. I was very upset and let down. It's even the 25th anniversary and they did nothing to the movie. And before anyone says it's me not the disc, I have a Samsung stand alone Blu ray player and a Samsung HDTV hooked up with HDMI cables. The TV is 46", 60,000:1 contrast ratio and 120hz and it rules! Other Blu rays look awesome. So awesome it should be illegal but not this one. DO NOT BUY THIS. SAVE THE $10 AND BUY THE DVD. I never thought I would say that and I never write reviews but I love this movie so much I had to let everyone know. Best Buy is the best. I buy everything from them. The TV and Blu ray player came from them. But I wish I had not bought this Blu ray. BTW the video game is awesome. If you like the movie and play games you will love the game. That is one man's opinion. Listen to it or not.

Dan Mumford was the perfect choice...

As a film enthusiast- I was very excited for the release of Ghostbusters in a new Steelbook package. The previous release of this film in Steelbook form, was a very uninspired release of just the standard logo of the franchise... And while the film itself is a beautiful accomplishment and work of collaboration between many comedians at the height of their careers- an uninspired Steelbook is a deal-breaker. That being said- upon hearing that this new Steelbook release was to receive artwork exclusively crafted by Dan Mumford- I was very excited to see what was to come. It is safe to say, that I was not disappointed. This new release of this classic has a gorgeous Art Deco appropriate for the creative style and color of the film itself. The promotional photos also do not do this release Justice, as the glossy sheen of the green and blue "pop" in the most incredible ways... If you're a Steelbook collector- then this is the perfect release to add a splash of color and creativity to your collection.

      Who you gonna call?

This is one of my favorite movies. Ghostbusters follows a team of scientists who become supernatural exterminators. The team cleans up ghosts plauging New York City and come face to face with a monster bent on destroying the world. Ghostbusters is played for laughs and is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Dan Ackroyd and Ernie Hudson all do great jobs as the Ghostbusters. The movie also has some nice visual effects, they may look dated but in the mid-80's these were Oscar worthy visual effects. The creature designers did a superb job in creating monsters that were scary enough to be taken seriously but not so frightening that they look out of place in a comedy. Ghostbusters is a film the entire family can enjoy. Action, fun and laughs all in a single movie. Ghostbusters is one for the ages.

I picked this up along with the second one after seeing the abyssmal remake. I personally love the art on this one more than the second movie, and the release is choc-full of special features to keep you busy well past the initial movie release. The only problem is the UV digital movie code included is NOT for the correct movie, instead you will be given a Ghostbusters II redemption code. A quick search reveals this seems to be the case for everyone. Some have had luck getting the correct movie, but most wind up playing phone tag between UV, Sony, and Best Buy with nothing to show. If you don't care about the digital snafu, this is a great release.

      No Ghost Allowed

If you were a kid, teen,or adult in the 80's you already know about the Ghosbusters. The movie was written by co-stars Dan Aykroyd who plays as Ray Stantz, and Harold Ramis as Egon Spengler. It's about three eccentric New York City parapsychologists turned-ghost exterminators. The movie also stars Bill Murray as Peter Venkman,Ernie Hudson as Winston Zeddemore,Sigourney Weaver as Dana Barrett,Annie Potts as Janine Melnitz,William Atherton as Walter Peck, and funnyman Rick Moranis as Louis Tully. But the characters, setpieces, and laughs are not the only things that make this movie memberal,it's also the movie's soundtrack. So if it's Ray Parker Jr's theme song or something by composer Elmer Berstein, the music is what makes the movie more enjoyable.

      Great case/Awful transfer

Everyone mentioning the amazing picture quality of this disc seem to be reviewing the 4k version. I bought the Blu-ray and I have not seen a worse transfer since George Lucas slapped the theatrical versions of the Original Trilogy on a few bonus discs. The picture is way too grainy and suffers from the recent epidemic of blue/green tint remasters. I’ll probably replace this disc with a better transfer in the future, keep the case and throw the one this came with in the garbage. I gave this one star because if it weren’t for the case, I would have returned this to the store for a refund.

Worth the double dip if you already purchased the prevous ghostbusters blu ray!! Search google for pic comparisons and youll see why! SONY - we need ghostbusters 2 on blu ray already!!!!! Its rediculous now that its still not out. Down right embarrassing!!!!
