A: I was looking for the Nvidia Control Panel to achieve this. Right-click the screen does not show it as I would expect. It turns out there is a "Show more options" at the bottom. Clicking on that menu brings out the Nvidia Control Panel, where one can switch the graphics card preference from "auto select" to the dedicated graphics card. This solved the problem - graphics performance from poor to good.

A: I would upgrade the laptop to 16gb before you try to game on it. It has only has one stick of 8gb ram in it. I upgraded the ram right way after getting it and I haven't had a problem with any games.
