Nest Protect Rocks!
Nest Protect Rocks!
|Posted .Nest Protect is one of the most comprehensive, of the smart smoke detectors I've ever purchased. Not only does it pick up several types of fires, as well as carbon monoxide, but it also does the best job at alerting you of the danger. It also works with a wide range of smart-home products. I've set my Philips Hue lights to turn on automatically when the Nest Protect goes off. Pretty cool!

|Posted .Definitely pleased with purchase, will be adding more units to this system. Worth the Money to me personally for your peace of mind for the security of your family, pets, property, etc. on a 10 yr. investment it comes out to less than .85 cents a month. This unit is well built, Smoke and Carbon Monoxide, and it works well with the app so far.

Quality1 out of 5Value1 out of 5Ease of Use5 out of 5Are you kidding me?! Replaced the batteries but still bad sensor. Dusted it as recommended (although not dusty) and still beeps saying I need to replace it. Why would I get another one when this one took a crap so soon. And back cover over batteries will not stay closed. No earthquakes where I live so not sure why covet won’t close or why it stopped. Made in China most likely reason. And now not returnable—of course.

Preeminent Protection for Your Loved Ones
Preeminent Protection for Your Loved Ones
|Posted .Pros mentioned:Alarm, Ease of use, Set upNest Protect Smart Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Alarm provides the ultimate protection & peace of mind. The intelligent alerts discriminate between steam and smoke. A clear "Heads Up!" pre-alert gently cautions you in situations when close proximity to steam or a little smoke in the kitchen, for example, is about to trigger an alert. You can silence a false alarm using your phone. Multiple units share alerts to all rooms & to your NEST App on your phone, tablet & computer - so you are protected throughout your home! The "Promise" is a ring of green light that illuminates nightly to let you know everything is good. Walk under NEST at night & the ring glows white, forming a pathlight. During Heads Up, it glows yellow. During an emergency, it glows red. NEST Protect self-tests, alerting you first by the phone app that it will sound. Everything is tested: sensors / voice / siren. Tests are dated & are sent to your app. A monthly summary even shows the exact date & time of each test. This is the premiere smoke detector, able to detect CO2 (even produces a completely different sound, for instant identification). NEST Protect senses both fast and slow burning fires. NO CHIRPS!! This advanced Smoke Alarm eliminates all of the hassles of pesky chirps from low batteries, with super long lasting Lithium Batteries included that last years. Battery alerts are through your App & by voice on the Alarm. To set-up, simply scan the QR Code on the back of the NEST & follow the voice instructions. Easiest set-up ever! NEST Protect earns my highest recommendation - no other Smoke / CO2 Alarm even comes close!

The wait for gen 2 has paid off!
The wait for gen 2 has paid off!
Posted .Pros mentioned:Set upI was always very interested in the original Nest Protect. I always loved the idea, but didn't feel the cost was justified given the negative reviews and early issues. Although they have been able to gradually improve the Nest Protect through software updates, I figured if I was patient enough, I could wait until they released a whole new hardware refresh. I'm glad I waited! Compared to the Nest Protect 1st gen, this one has an improved smoke chamber (fewer false alarms), smaller physical footprint, App Silence feature (silence alarm through app via Bluetooth), and other hardware improvements that extend the stated lifespan to ten years (up from seven)! All very good improvements. But does it work? Well, my house hasn't done the ultimate test of becoming engulfed in flames yet, but I did do some basic false alarm testing. Steam from a nearby bathroom, and light smoke from a candle, both failed to trip the alarm. So it seems their claims of fewer false alarms are true thus far. *Setup* Getting this set up was very easy. You can really tell they put a lot of work into the presentation and setup. The box is easy to open, and very welcoming with its simplistic and well-designed instructions. Everything in the manual is accompanied by very good pictures to help you along the way. Basically, the steps are: 1) Download app (Android and iOS compatible) and create a free account 2) Open Nest Protect box and remove hardware 3) With app ready to pair device, pull plastic tab from Nest Protect unit to power it on 4) Unit goes through some brief testing where you will be left with absolutely no doubt the alarm works (LOUD!) 5) Unit will pair with your phone so you can enter in wifi network info, after which it will connect to wifi 6) Remove old smoke detector and mounting plate 7) Disconnect old smoke detector wires and reconnect new wires included with Nest Protect 8) Screw in Newst Protect mounting plate and snap in other end of new wires to unit 9) Twist in unit to new mounting plate 10) Finish with another test and make final configuration changes via app. Done! This was the first time I had ever replaced a smoke detector, and I found it very easy. *Mobile App* The app is very well-designed and works well on both my phone and tablet. It also integrates with a ton of other home automation gadgets, which is really cool (Nest Thermostat obviously, Philips Hue bulbs, Skydrop sprinkler controller, and many others). Here's some of the things you can do from the app: - Change mode between Home and Away (not really relevant to CO detector, but good for other devices) - Iniitiate Nest Protect sound test, checkup - Silence alarm - Change Protect location (family room, bedroom, etc, for accurate communication) - Adjust Nest Sense: - - Toggle Pathlight to light your way when you are under Protect at night - - Nightly Promise (Unit self-tests and gives green "OK" light each night) - - Steam Check (reduce false alarms on steam, good for units near bathrooms) - - Heads Up (less loud & annoying pre-alarm warning when rising CO levels detected) - Adjust unit LED brightness (low, medium, high) - Change language (English, English (UK), Spanish, French, French (CA), Netherlands) - View unit status (model, serial, software version, battery status, replace date, last update time, wifi MAC/IP addresses) - Add/remove devices to your account - What To Do (advice on preparing for CO/fire alerts) - Device History (logs on alarms and updates) So overall, the Nest Protect is an expertly-designed device and I love it so far. It has everything I could expect from a smoke/CO detector. Although it would be awesome if it could double as a wireless access point or security camera! I will definitely update this as I get more time with my Nest Protect 2nd gen units, especially if I get false positives, or actual positives. But so far I am loving my Nest Protect.

Nest Protect Does Exactly What It Says!
Nest Protect Does Exactly What It Says!
|Posted .I would recommend this to a friendThis is my 5th Nest Protect (located in my home office) and it saved my house from a potential catastrophe. I left the gas burner on while sterilizing baby bottles and went to work. The water boiled out and the alarm activated saying there was smoke in the hallway. Since no one was home, I was receiving alerts on my phone initially from the detector in the hallway; that is until all smoke detectors ultimately started alerting me. I immediately sent a relative to the home to find the gas burner on with all bottles melted. The situation could have become worse if I wasn't notified via alerts on my phone. Since I setup the alarm to notify other relatives, they were calling me as well to see if I was ok. Thank you Nest Protect!

Q: QuestionI have pets that are terrified of alarms. Can the monthly self checks be configured to not sound an alarm or at minimum, let me schedule it for a time I can be home? Is the self check an alarm or a voice? Do all devices self check at once?
Asked by BrewBoy
- A:Answer I think you can schedule the alarm. You do receive a notification that it will sound and the alarm is not blaring. I have a dog and two cats, no one freaks out over the alarm. Yes the self-check one after the other for each location.

Q: Questiondo you have to activate the wifi/internet feature to have the smoke alarm work to just alert you to a fire? I don't need to have the phone alerts,& just want to know if it is necessary to hook up to the wifi to have the alarms work like regular alarms
Asked by Lizzy
- A:Answer It will function as a normal smoke alarm if there is no wifi. I believe the head's up feature will still work as well. But wifi is not necessary for basic protection.

Q: QuestionDoes the alarm sound an audible beeping sound like a regular smoke alarm or can you just have it do a voice alarm?
Asked by Nestquestion
- A:Answer If the Nest Protect goes off with a heads up alert first, then this would be an audible alert telling you that there's smoke in the room. If the smoke is thick enough to cause the smoke alarm to go off, then this would be a siren like a typical smoke alarm to alert you. Q: QuestionRemote notifications- Can audible alarm be turned off remotely. Can test feature audible be turned on and off remotely.
Asked by Thomas
- A:Answer There is no difference between being on your network or remote. During setup, the nest needs to connected to the internet to be activated. Assuming you do not subsequently disable via your firewall, you can do all functions both remote and locally via the app - including both turning off an alarm and testing.

Q: QuestionDo you have to have a Nest thermostat installed in the home that you will be using the 2nd generation smart smoke/carbon monoxide alarm?
Asked by JRae
- A:Answer We have the Nest Thermostat in our home. Considering Nest's setup, I dont think you will Need to have the thermostat to use the smart Smoke Alarm.

Q: QuestionHow many square feet will 1 alarm do
Asked by Reta
- A:Answer It depends on how big you want the fire to get before an alarm is sounded. There is no set square footage. For my home I put them at or near intersections, where it covers more than one room.
Answered by MrGadget
Q: QuestionCan you link more than three alarms to same system
Asked by Rick
- A:Answer We combined one hardwired and nine battery operated Nest Protects to cover our 4300 square foot home. Installation was very easy, as was programming. We like that we can name each unit, they all communicate with each other, they speak a warning before starting any alarms, and the nightlight feature is a far handier bonus than we expected. Being able to check the status of the units from our phones when we are away also provides even more peace of mind. As long as these units stand the test of time, we couldn't ask for more!

Q: QuestionCan the nest smoke sectors be set up to work with a central alarm monitoring service. I have to have this for an office bldg and is required by our insurance company
Asked by Redneckfred
- A:Answer No, this only works with nest thermostat.
