Important technology, especially during COVID
Posted .Features
Quality4 out of 5Value4 out of 5Ease of Use5 out of 5I recently was forced to move to a new city, due to health reasons/medical treatment, and it meant moving away from my 89 year old grandma. Our 5 minute drive to visit is now 10 hours. While she doesn't rely on us for for day-to-day needs, she does rely on us for a social outlet, and the idea of losing that connection with her was seriously distressing to all of us. That's when my husband did some searching and discovered the GrandPad. I'm not going to lie- I had serious reservations. Serious. To give you some background: My grandma was a low income blue collar worker most of her life who didn't even graduate high school. She is intelligent and independent, but has had zero experience with any technology, aside from the remote that controls her TV. I didn't want to disappoint my husband by shooting his idea down, but I definitely approached it with trepidation. All of my worries were for naught; my grandma has taken to her GrandPad like a duck to water. I can't believe how easily she's picked up how to use it. I do believe that a part of it is her sheer will and determination, but the ease-of-use has definitely been a big part of it. While our family enjoys uploading photos and videos so she can still feel like she's involved in our day-to-day lives, the video call feature has also been simply awesome. Being able to see each other's smiling faces while having a chat has been a blessing, especially during COVID when face masks are the norm. Just today she discovered (completely on her own) how to leave audio comments on the photos we've uploaded for her. She also has used the transportation feature to order a Lyft, when she doesn't feel up to driving herself to her doctor's appointments. I should clarify that she had previous experiences with my husband ordering Lyfts for her, so she's familiar with the service. We don't want her to worry about money, and so it's great that we can set it up so that we are charged for her transportation. Gushing aside, there have been two small quibbles: Her GrandPad suddenly shut off for no apparent reason, and it wasn't due to a low battery. My husband called support and it was determined that it needed a hard reset, which is difficult considering we're 10 hours away. My husband gave instructions over the phone to my grandma, to pass along to another family member who could assist her. Two hours later my grandma called back- she had figured out how to do it on her own. Crazy! And, I feel like the screen size is a little small. If GrandPad ever considered doing a larger version, we'd purchase it in a snap. Yes, there is a monthly charge but it's been worth it in spades. I know that could unfortunately be a barrier for some folks, which saddens me; if GrandPad ever considered starting a "grant" program to donate toward monthly bills or tablets so that those in need could access this technology, my family would be all for supporting it. Especially with COVID and social distancing, being able to easily connect with our elderly family members is more than important than ever, for their mental health and ours. I know that BestBuy is no longer carrying this product but I sincerely hope that they'll bring it back.

Granpad has opened a whole new life for my DAD
|Posted .I would recommend this to a friendMy Dad is 91 yrs old and has been having a very hard time using his cell phone. This new Grandpad .. only needed cell phone connection has given my Dad a whole new love for life. Living a alone he is able to connect with all his family easily and on VIDEO .. Yes VIDEO Chat !! he love the music, and picture gallery we down loaded for him. At $ 40 a month this is the best deal out there. Not only can DAD see all of us when he calls, but we can check on him daily and feel good even being 1300 miles away. The price for the Granpad is only 200 dollars and is as good as any smart phone , but the size of the pad is what makes it easy to use for seniors who have never used an iphone or Ipad. Great Customer Service and easy to get started.

Great for seniors
|Posted .I would recommend this to a friendNice device, however as this is aimed at senior citizens they should have thought about making the ring tone louder. Also why have a pen that isn’t attached to the base (easy to misplace).

Has been a lifesaver!!
|Posted .I would recommend this to a friendI bought this for my grandmother. Granted, so far she has only learned the call button...but that's ok. That's the most important one!! My mom is her caregiver, it has been a huge help to her also. She can see my grams at any given moment form anywhere. The bonus is that grams is now able to talk to extended family. It doesn't cost her extra like on a landline. And she has been able to see all her new grandkids all over the country...lolol The only problem so far, is that she lives in an old house with a tin roof. The cell service sometimes can be shoddy...but the grandpad itself is awesome!!

Not great
|Posted .No, I would not recommend this to a friendI purchased this for my parents as a Christmas gift. In 20 days, we have not been able to get it to work. I finally found out that the sim card is for a T Mobile phone and they need an ATT sim card. Now, I have to pay to have it replaced. this is not a very good service for elderly people who are not current with devices such as these.

Great product!
|Posted .I would recommend this to a friendMy 83 year old mother was afraid of getting her identity stolen so she gave up on the internet, email, and being connected at all. Since she lives far away it is hard to keep her as up to date with photos etc. Grandpad is easy to use, we are the moderator of all she gets, and it can automatically send our Instagram and Facebook posts to her without fear. Perfect for what it is marketed for!

Great way to stay connected
Posted .I would recommend this to a friendI purchased the GrandPad for my 95 year old grandmother. I was very pleased with the information that the store associate was able to share with me. They helped assure me that my non-tech savvy grandmother would be able to use it. After working with the display in the store I felt the same way. I decided to purchase it and take it home to get it ready for her to try. I was able to activate it on-line without any trouble. I then uploaded some pictures on it using the GrandPad App I downloaded for my phone. After getting some pictures and an email sent to the GrandPad, I took it to my grandmother for a test run. When I first gave it to her, she was a little hesitant. After showing her the pictures and how easy it was to look through them, she was excited to see what else she could do. While I was still there, we did a test call to my brother and his kids. My grandmother's face lit up when we were able to do a video call with them. I was a bit amazed myself at how easy it was to do. This is definitely going to be a great way to keep my grandmother connected to the rest of the family.
Q: QuestionWill we have access to the internet?
Asked by popadoc.
- A:Answer I'm returning this devise as Cingular cellular says the unit must only be used with thier internet service. That is not what the store clerk told me before I purchased it for my mother as a Christmas gift. She is on a low budget and would not be able to add another monthey service for this Grandpap... Bummed!!!

Q: QuestionCan Dementia patients use the grandpad?
Asked by Addy.
- A:Answer I think it depends on the person and the severity of the disease. Like, how are they with a smart phone? It is similar, but easier. My Dad had mild dementia and was not able to use it - but he never got the smartphone concept before he got sick.

Q: QuestionWith grandpad you set which internet sites the user can access. If I set google.com as a site will the user be able to search the internet?
Asked by Mumble.
- A:Answer No, not really, I set my dad's Grandpad up to use Google. He can search Google, but cannot access any of the links. Anything that is shown in "search" answers can be seen, but not clicked on.

Q: QuestionSo can you talk on this like a regular phone?
Asked by Jason.
- A:Answer The Grandpad has a camera and speaker so it more like you talk at the device. You do not pick it up and hold it to your ear. You can choose a voice call or what they refer to as a video chat. The video chat allows the caller and the senior to see one another: similar to FaceTime or Skype without the need to get those apps and waiting. Those calling the GrandPad need the app on their phone and use that to connect with senior. Hope that helps!!
