Refreshing new spin on the MMO
Posted .I'm an old MMORPG veteran. I played EQ, EQ2, and WoW for many years. I quit WoW shortly after Cata came out. I was just getting tired of the same old level grind, "second job" raiding to get the latest gear that will we outdated in the next patch, and re-learning my class and re-doing my talents every time Blizz made one of their trademark "class overhauls" every 6 months. I tried a few other MMOs but just a short time into them I could see it was WoW all over again and I had no desire to do the same old cookie cutter quests of kill X of these, find that, talk to so and so and come back, bla bla bla. I have been keeping an eye on GW2 since before it came out, reading reviews, watching videos, etc to see if it was really going to live up to the hype. Finally I decided to give it a try, and I'm glad I did. I could go ON AND ON about the differences and similarities, but I will try to pick some of the biggest ones to describe for you. If you have played any of the MMOs I mentioned, you will notice right off that ArenaNet made huge efforts to break the Cliche' MMO mold. Yes, there is different races, and familiar classes like warriors, rangers (hunters), Guardians (Paladins) etc. BUT many of them have pretty intuitive twists that make them different than the standard. Every class has some kind of healing abilities. There really is no "trinity" system (Tank, healer, DPS). There is no "agro tables" or "taunts", everyone has to use their special defensive and offensive abilities to stay alive and subdue their targets. No more healers standing in the corner spamming HOT rotations, Tanks running in spamming taunts, and DPSers mashing buttons. You all have to pay attention, move around and respond to changing battle situations. There are some "set" quest lines (they follow your personal story line) but there are random "events" that happen in your area that you can participate in and get credit (XP, money, loot, etc) for.. Everyone who participates in an event/kill will get credit for it, no fighting over kill targets or waiting for long respawns if someone else beat you to it. Since there isnt "opposing factions" there isn't a problem of being ganked/griefed by higher level "tough guys" who get their kicks by "Pwning noobs" PvP: There isnt pvp going on in the adventuring world, but there is the familiar "battleground" style events, and "arena" type too, but there is also World PvP, or WvWvW. Three different servers (worlds) enter a LARGE PvP map and battle to take over different types of bases. Different basses are worth different points and once you capture a base it must be defended from opposing teams who will want to control it, meanwhile you fight to take control of the basses they control. Its actually pretty fun once you figure out what is going on and what to do. You can gather materials to create different offensive and defensive contraptions to aid your team in victory and repair your damaged bases and assets. Many of these differences are a welcome change from the norm and make it more interesting and engaging. Some of em are a little confusing at first, and some of the changes, inevitably wont please everyone. The basic game play will be easy to pick up for those familiar with the genre, the music and sound effects are pretty good and most of the dialogue is spoken. The graphics are pretty good but I wouldnt go as far to say "awe inspiring" and character models look pretty good when you are creating them and there is TONS of ways to customize their features, but once in game, you really dont see most of those details. If you like MMOs and are on the fence on this one (like I was) wondering if its good, or just more of the S.O.S. I would encourage you to give it a shot. Since there is no subscription required you dont need to feel wasteful even if you only play it casually. For me, it really made playing MMORPGs fun again! As with most in this Genre, there has been a few "growing pains" with glitches and bugs or server crashes, but not too many. Most folk who have played games like this in their early launch stages know what Im talking about, and really, these ones aren't near as bad as I have seen in some others and get handled pretty quickly without a lot of downtime. Since I have been playing, I have seen one server crash, and was able to log right back in, and one coordinated ("warning server will restart in 5 minutes") server restart. So far, overall I am pretty Impressed, but I also can't really say that I am "blown away".

Guild Wars 2! 5 stars!
Posted .I'm COMPLETELY new to Guild Wars and I just had to write a review! This game is amazing in every aspect; the soundtrack is beautiful and always switches up depending on your situation, the graphics are very crystal clear and detailed to every last touch, there is just so much to do in this game - you never seem to run out of excitement! The character customization is what I loved as well; you can carve your character in every way you please from angling brows to what color you fancy on him/her from head to toe. It is very in depth about how you want your character to be in the world, personality and history wise. I found this game to be utterly delightful for even a beginner like me as sometimes MMO's tend to be a headache for newcomers, but nope! The main cities even have "tour guides"! So many options, so many different ways to level! So glad it isn't the usual "quest or kill" grind that bores any hardcore gamer within 3 minutes (or less)! The world itself is MASSIVE. There are also "Special Events" triggered just by venturing in a zone that you can opt to participate in, which obviously gives you a hefty reward at the end -- IF you complete the given task! It does have some violence, but honestly, I wouldn't keep a fun and mind-challenging game like this from my children. It's a realistic, dynamic game where one day you're trying to figure out how to get a job to make gold to buy more items you need (like the real world, lol) and the next day you're slaying huge, disfigured beasts! You'll never play the same storyline with every character made, I can assure you. If you're up for a very engaging, addicting adventure that never stops coming at full force -- this is the game to buy, my friends.

Great game for someone who is new to online gaming
||Posted .This is the first online game I have played. It's been a fantastic experience. I love that you have your personal storyline that you can persue on your own, or if you get stuck, you can invite friends in to lend you a hand. If you want to just 'hang out' with friends, run around and explore the different worlds, and get into a few battles, this is the game for you. I have been playing this game for about a month now, and there is still so much to discover. Then I can create a new character and rediscover the world from a whole new perspective. I can see being entertained by this game for a long time to come. Great value for the money!

Great game for newbies
||Posted .The good: A fun game for players new to MMO's, so far the community has been welcoming and helpful. Not having to pay a monthly fee to play is a huge plus. Leveling/PvE have been fun so far, with enough variety to keep it interesting without being too difficult for a new player unused to the MMORPG genre. Not so good: While basic controls are easy to pick up, I highly suggest paying the forums on the game website a visit, as well as the player-run wiki for more complete information on various features of the game since the in game help is often useless after the first hour or two of play. There is great variety in the personal story lines, which you influence with choices throughout the game, but the creators seem to have sacrificed some continuity and depth to provide it. The stories are fun but not as engaging as they could have been, and some of the plot holes are frustrating. Notes: I am not a big PvP player and so haven't tried out the small-team PvP stuff yet, but the few forays into WvW play I have made were fun even though my low-level equipment meant I wasn't really very useful. None of the people I played with treated me badly, most gave useful advice and let me tag along for achievements. Also the variety of female armor that actually looks protective is refreshing- You can still go for skimpier clothing but the choice is yours. Overall: a great game for new players and certainly worth the price, be sure to make use of player-made resources to get more out of the game. Once you figure out how to work the chat feature, don't be afraid to ask for advice from other players. Most have been very willing to help out.

Probably the best game for years to come...
Posted .Pending the fixes to the server bandwidth and load issues this is going to be the best game for years to come. They've already hotfixed everything (and can do so without bringing down the servers... no more downtime for updates) that had an issue and have doubled their servers... the game is so good that they just cant handle the loads still! We're one week into the release and it's been the best mmo release I've played to date (five before this). This explanation was to inform you why there are bad reviews from others... they do not understand that mmo on release is always a bit glitched. Character customization is amazing. Character uniqueness in combat is great. Graphics are amazing. Audio is great. Unique Features are amazing. Different types of play: -exploration -dungeon -quest -rts -pvp -ladder pvp -pve -world event -jump puzzle The features to this game are amazing and the best part: no monthly fee. That's right! You buy and play for free after purchase. Great title for a Great price. Get it if you like to rpg, pvp, mmo, pve, or basically anything else besides shooter only (and some of those are ranting about how great this game is as well) on a pc game.

Great Game
||Posted .I bought this game because of my experience with GW1. I can't say enough good about this game. It's a great way to spend some time... or a lot of time; it all depends on what you want to do. You can grind (if your into that kind of thing), you can quest, you can map, you can craft, you can help, or you can solve some of the puzzles and find hidden areas throughout the world The game is easily done single-player or with a random group you might jump in with as they pass by. If you're thinking about it, don't think, just do.

Awesome Game
Posted .This is the best MMO I have ever played and I have played several over the years. The lack of a fee is huge, but more importantly they eliminated quite a few time sinks popular in most big MMOs. They also got rid of frustrating features common in MMOs like competition over resource nodes and monster spawns. There is no reason not to randomly help people you come across because it benefits both parties (loot, XP). The whole thing promotes team work and keeps the flow of combat exciting. Basically this game brings out the best in people (everyone benefits) and anyone that plays lots of online games knows that can be rare. The game also sports some pretty in depth PVP, but I have been having so much fun in the PVE portion I haven't even tried it yet so I can't comment in that area.

Sharp MMO game for you
||Posted .Guild Wars 2 is an excellent MMORPG and it is highly recommended for it's event based gameplay, and large world. Pvp is excellent, and it doesn't have the feel of grinding for levels. I highly recommend this game for anyone.
