Synopsis

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters
Fifteen years after a horrific experience in a deceptively inviting ginger bread house, an orphan Hansel (Jeremy Renner) and Gretel (Gemma Arterton) have become famous for ridding the countryside of witches. Despite their stellar success record, the brother and sister face a unique challenge when an extremely powerful witch is identified as the culprit stealing children from a local village with the intent to sacrifice them in an ancient magical ceremony to be held on the night of the Blood Moon. As Hansel and Gretel race against the clock, making several unlikely allies on the way (among them a troll and a witch hunter fanboy), they unexpectedly come across a link to their own pasts and the secret their parents took with them when they disappeared. The film was directed by Tommy Wirkola. Actresses Famke Janssen and Pihla Vitala co-star. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi

A nicely dark, humurous storybook retelling...

A lot of reimaginings have been going for the past few years, Cinderella, Oz: The Great and Powerful and more films Disney is remaking live action and earning billions, and its totally uninspired and boring. I thought the same when I saw trailers for Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, despite an R rating and produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McCay, I passed on it until it hit Redbox. Wish I hadn't because this film surprised me with some fun action, good acting and loads of style. The story isn't anything to write home about, but I dig how Hansel has diabetes from all that candy the witch fed him years ago, the whole bounty hunter feel, and love the style this film has. The picture quality is sharp as a tack, and the audio is a nicely loud action track filled with directional effects, LFE and plenty of clarity. The extras are unfortunately slim, with just a few featurettes to tide you over, with the BBY exclusive featurettes a nice bonus, but the problem is that only the unrated cut is in HD. Unless you get the 3D BluRay, you'll have to live with the theatrical cut on the included DVD, which is okay but sub par compared to the BluRay.

This is one of those movies that came and went with little fanfare. I was interested enough to keep it on my radar so when it hit home video, I would give it a watch. It is right up my alley, genre wise, and I didn't have any expectations going into it. If you want to be entertained with mindless historical action/horror(?), this is the film for you. If you were expecting a thought provoking period piece, you probably knew what to expect before you even started (It is called Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters for a reason). I enjoyed and I think anyone who likes this type of movie will as well.

Revenge can be a real witch! This is a twist on the classic fairy tale of Hansel & Gretel where the kids are now grown up and want vengeance on the witches that are terrorizing the countryside. However, their family has some terrible secrets of their own that puts a plot twist into place that Le Femme Nikita could be proud of! Jeremy Renner(Hawkeye from Avengers) and Fammke Jannsen(Jean Grey/Phoenix from X-Men) star in this scary, action packed fantasy with excellent CGI/special effects! This movie is rated R for violence, nudity, and language but mainly for violence.

It has been a long time since I have not been disappointed in a movie. A lot of movies seem to have the same story line as other movies so you always know what to expect. I hate seeing good previews on tv and watch the movie just to find out those were the ONLY good parts to the movie This movie has a lot of action that keeps you interested in it the entire time. Its not a movie where you think "when is it going to pick up and get to the good parts". I watched it in theater and for the first time in a long time I felt like I got my moneys worth. Would recommend this movie to others.

I bought this movie simply because it was in 3D and looked like it would have some good action scenes. the 3D was cheesy at best and the action was done so poorly that in one of the scenes where they are fighting a witch it is painfully obvious that it's just a stunt man in a dress and a Halloween mask. there's even a part where the witch is supposedly running at super-speed and it's just that old 1970's speed up the film trick, I honestly expected the Benny Hill music to start playing!

The movie is what it is. It delivers fine entertainment with action thrown all over the screen. The R rating is for language and witches blood, so for bloody violence. The cinematography was well done with very sharp colors and great witch hunting action. I watched it once to review and then I let my pre-teen children watch it. The brother and sister duel works very well together and made the movie quite enjoyable. I watched the movie three times and enjoyed it each time.

A fun horror flick which made the most of its R rating and 3D shooting. The only bad part is that the official director's cut is only available in the 2D version. WTF? So, the only thing you can experience in 3D is the trimmed theatrical version? Lame. Obviously the extra footage was already captured in 3D so if you didn't want to go through the damned expense of digital conversion then this footage should've been left as 2D withing a 3D version. Poor, poor judgement.

Have you seen and enjoyed 'Van Helsing' or 'In the Name of the King'? If you have then this is the movie for you! The acting is (mostly) wooden, the scenery is chewed regularly and the plot is straightforward enough that if you aren't careful you will get run over by the plot wagon. That having been said, it is a good movie for what it is and it doesn't really try for anything more than that. My wife would probably give it 4 stars but I can only muster 3.
