Hardcore Henry was a whole lot of fun. A true first person shooter fan's wet dream of a movie. The plot is thin, the action spectacular has a cool plot device and the obligatory "twist". If you go in understanding that this is a partly crowd funded, independent movie, it is EASILY, HANDS DOWN, the best independent action movie ever made. From beginning to end, you are the hero of the movie, and that certainly has it's pros and it's cons. If you're sensitive to motion sickness, it might mess with you a bit, but I found that it didn't bother me at all. Because of the "first person" view, don't expect too many "cinematic vistas", the visual splendor comes from the intense, never yielding, constant flow of action and violence. You've never seen a movie like Hardcore Henry, but I'm guessing if you've played a few video games you've basically seen this film but to see it play out in real life (most of the action in this movie is practical effects with the use of editing to make "the magic happen") is truly something to behold. When you see Henry hundreds of feet off the ground suspended from a helicopter and his rope is cut, the footage of him falling to the Earth in magnificent style, really happened. When you see Henry free-climbing buildings or being blown off the roof of a truck, a real actor was bungied off a truck and the equipment was all edited out later. What I'm telling you is that this movie has AMAZING stunt work that might get passed off as simple computer "animation" when it's not. Finally, I have to mention Sharlito Copley. If you're not a fan of this guy (District 9, or Murdoch from the A-Team movie) you will be when this is over. In the course of this movie he plays a wide variety of personalities and it works very, very well. I don't write reviews like this much, but I think this movie is going to fly under a lot of people's radar. Let me be clear though, this movie knows it's audience. If you have to think really hard when you watch a movie, pass on this one, it's not deep. If you want a date night movie, this isn't the one. (Caveat being if your girl is a HARDCORE first person gamer, then you might be her hero.) But if you're a guy that likes your action video games, your finishing movies, your gun play, and movies with cyborgs, violence, strippers, guns, coked out madmen, guns, bad guys with psychic powers, guns, violence, grenades, guns and violent bad guys with guns, this movie is going to impress you.

As long as you know that this movie is more style over substance, then you'll probably enjoy it more. When I watched it, I wasn't expecting a riveting story, which allowed the few twists that are in the loose story to make a bit more of an impact. But if you're interested in seeing this, it's definitely not for the story. The gimmick of having a first-person view hard R action flick is a novel one, but because the filmmakers approached it as seriously as they did, what might've turned out to be a really cheesy sci-fi action flick succeeded in going past solely relying on its gimmick to becoming a quite enjoyable albeit cheesy action flick. The action sequences are really well done, and because it was filmed in and around Russia, the safety laws of what stunt men could and couldn't do were a bit laxed which allowed the filmmakers to make the stunts look even more dangerous, because they were. Hardcore Henry does what it sets out to do pretty well, and it's well worth a watch or two because I promise that you won't be able to catch everything that they did the first time through. I'd love to see what they could do with a sequel and a slightly tighter written plot. Any action movie fan should give this a look.

It was billed as an unusual experience and an adrenaline rush. In truth it reminded me of a combination of a first person video game and the Crank movies from Jason Statham. Our hero awakes to see mechanical pieces being added to his body after suffering a horrible accident (or perhaps not so accidental). He can't speak because supposedly that hadn't been fixed yet. So he escapes with the woman who claims to be his wife using an escape pod from some flying lab. The movie continues as he basically gets led from one attempt to get information and help to the next. Even that is set up like a video game as a voice of one the characters he has met keeps urging him along. It felt a bit like one of the more recent Russian attempts at big action movies. While it wasn't necessarily the greatest of films or even completely original in style, it did have a certain amount of fun. It isn't necessarily everyone's cup of tea, but it was entertaining enough for a low price. I wouldn't spend $20 on it, but for a $10 movie it might be worth watching a couple times.

I really didn't know much about this movie. I had seen it around in DVD sections of stores, and then I DVRed it when it was on a movie channel. After I saw it with my teenage son, I went ahead and got it, when I found it at BestBuy. The movie is shot from the perspective of a first-person video game, in which, the main character finds himself waking-up in a bizarre situation that he must investigate, and interact with, in order to figure out what is going on, and who he is. There's lots of action, violence, and gun-play... all with a slightly SciFi flavor. If you like this type of video-game, you'll really like this movie. My son is an avid video-gamer, and loved the movie. I don't play video-games, but I also really liked the mystery of the situation, the action, and the ending (which surprised my son a little). Again, it is shot in first-person perspective... but, not like "found footage" movies such as "Blair Witch". It is much better.

The original camera angles make a nice gimmick to draw you in, but there's actually a decent storyline hidden in there too. It's full of action and is really a non-stop ride from beginning to end. Sharlto Copely is the film's saving grace as he brings characters to life and adds a dimension to the film that you don't expect. However, the tasks begin to get longer and more similar and eventually you want something different. That's where the film falters. At the beginning of the third act it drifts into the familiar for about 15 minutes and it feels like they were just trying to stretch the film to a longer running time. Still, it's fun, violent, full of action, and unique enough to warrant watching it.

I really enjoyed the movie. I had heard a lot of negative reviews but after watching it I felt the movie was actually pretty good. Had a interesting store and the perspective of watching it in first person was very interesting. I felt they could have fleshed out the story a little more but when you think about watching a movie, you think of different scenes where you may follow a secondary character or even cut scene to the bad guy giving his monologue on what his plan is. In this movie you learn things thru the eyes of the main character. Nothing cuts away from what Henry sees, you learn only what he learns when he learns it. This makes for an interesting story.

Wow, the action really is impressive. I would rank this in the top 10 movies of all time if that was the only criterion. HH really is like a video game, in terms of wicked action, but also cliche' And/or caricatured characters. The main baddie is the absolute worst example of this. He's so unbelievable that he takes you out of the moment every time he's on screen. But even at 2 stars, it's still a recommend for anyone who appreciates over the top action and violence. There were 2 or 3 of the best chase scenes of all time in the second act alone.

My title to this review is misleading, this was a great movie it was a great experience to watch. The whole movie is shot in first person view, such as most video games are played. This might cause a nauseating feeling in some, there where part that I got dizzy so I am sure that most people will expedience this especially if they are watching it with a VR headset. No other movie is like this nor do I think there would be. The store of this plays like a video game several small bosses then the big bad towards the end. Its a fun film that everyone should experience once.
