Buying Studio Headphones

5 Factors to Consider When Choosing Studio Headphones

There is no such thing as one-size-fits-all professional headphones. Because each person is different, you need to determine the best studio headphones for your audio recording needs and other purposes. To do that, start by taking into account five considerations: style, comfort, noise isolation, sound quality and cord length.

For instance, let's say you want to mix music with music editing software on a laptop or PC. Whether it's wireless studio headphones for mixing and mastering, condenser microphones or instruments, you will want to plug them all into an audio interface while you mix. You also want to store your audio files the various tracks, versions and fragments you will be using. Portable external hard drives will enable you to store large music track files and to take those files wherever you go when collaborating with others.

Advantages of Mixing with Studio Headphones

Not all headphones are created equal. Different headphones serve different purposes. When mixing music, you probably need to identify finer details than studio monitors allow. In those circumstances, studio headphones can provide what you need to get the job done.

Your decision-making process when choosing headphones likely will be affected by the location of where you do your work. If you mix tracks or cut music in an open studio space, for instance, closed-back studio headphones can help block out a noisy environment, particularly one where people are talking or musicians are rehearsing on guitars or drums.

Additionally, consider how much mobility you need while you work. Some people like to move around their recording area or studio quite a bit while working. For that reason, you are going to want to consider the length of the cord you use for your headphones. While it is true that you want a longer cord if you want to move around more, the shorter the cord, the less obvious it is to people if you plan on sitting mostly in one spot. Not fumbling with an unnecessarily long cord can help you keep focused and in the zone while you search for just the right sound you want.
