    Synopsis

    Here Comes the Boom
A devoted high-school teacher risks life and limb as a mixed-martial-arts fighter in order to rescue his school's music program from the cutting block in this action comedy from director Frank Coraci (The Wedding Singer, Click). Back in his prime, Scott Voss (Kevin James) was a collegiate wrestler with some fairly impressive moves. Now, at 42, he teaches biology at troubled Wilkinson High School. Mr. Voss has begun to grow deeply indifferent in his role as an educator when a troubling announcement stirs him to action. Effective immediately, Wilkinson High will be eliminating all extracurricular activities. Suddenly, the most apathetic teacher on the staff has a reason to get involved. But how is a typical high-school teacher like Mr. Voss supposed to raise the $48,000 needed to save the music program from going belly up? Upon learning that some MMA fighters earn $10,000 just for stepping into the ring, Mr. Voss vows to get back in shape, and subject himself to a series of brutal beatings so his students won't have to go without. Salma Hayek and Henry Winkler co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

You’ve been doing the same job for most of your adult life and stopped making an effort a decade ago. Then you hear the news that someone who’s been doing the job even longer and still makes an effort is about to be fired. Do you let it happen? Scott Voss (played by Kevin James) is a 42 year-old biology teacher. Ten years ago, he was given a Teacher of the Year award but when we join the story, he’s sleeping late, making little or no effort in the classroom and seen as an embarrassment by the principal, Mr. Betcher (played by Greg Germann). When Betcher (Germann) catches him sneaking into class late via the classroom window, he gives Voss parking lot duty and strips him of a vacation day. Rather than accept more work that he’s in no way interested in doing, he tries to find someone to fill in for him. His colleague, Marty, the music teacher (played by Henry Winkler) is more than willing to assume the responsibility but also a little shaken by the news that his wife is pregnant. Later, at a school board budget meeting, he’s given the even more troubling news that thanks to budget problems, the music program is in jeopardy. Voss, despite his long-standing apathy, offers to raise money to save the music program and his colleague’s job. He resumes the job of teaching citizenship classes in night school but sees that the wages would make it near-impossible to earn the money in time. One of his students, Niko (played by Bas Rutten) asks for additional tutoring and Voss agrees, reluctantly. It is during a tutoring session at Niko’s apartment that Voss, who wrestled in college, sees a mixed martial arts match, learns that the loser was paid $10,000, and decides he can raise the money by joining this very punishing sport. Now, the last Kevin James movie that I saw in theaters was Zookeeper. I wasn’t impressed. I won’t say that Here Comes the Boom was impressive, but it was easily a step up from Zookeeper. Also, naming the movie after what would eventually become the main character’s theme song isn’t particularly creative. Still, I was entertained. Watching an overweight 42 year-old enter the ring and take serious punishment over and over…and over was hilarious and watching the effect his decision to make an effort had, not just on him but on the entire cast of characters, was bizarrely uplifting. I don’t imagine James or any of his co-stars will receive awards for their work in this film, but I liked it and you might too.

This movie is funny for the whole family. These days it is hard to find movies that are funny, engaging, and safe for the family (especially movies with big names like Kevin James). This movie derails Kevin James from his typical characters of a "clueless people" to a more noble character. I enjoyed watching this movie with its humor and action scenes.

Kevin James is awesome in this feel good movie. This movie shows he can carry a movie as the lead and what a great supporting cast. My nephew is a MAA fighter & my mother is a huge MMA fan and she was laughing during the whole movie. Henry Winkler was great as the music teacher and Selma Hayek as the Sassy school nurse/love interest was perfect.

The overall story line of helping others helps forgive the bad sides of him such as sleeping in class and not caring about much. When he does succeed he begins his transformation from a character flaws to a much improved person that is caring. This demonstrates that anyone can better themselves if they try.

I did not think I would like this movie, but I was surprised. It kind of grows on you. Kevin James and Henry Winkler are just so likeable. I did not care for Salma Hayek at all. Though it is predictable, this is a fun movie for the whole family that you can watch over and over.

Kevin James is funny, especially his facial expressions. I thought he really brings his character to life. I probably would have felt this movie was so-so if it was any other actor in his part. It's a good make-me-giggle movie when I'm feeling blah!

It's a warm and funny movie with laughs in unexpected places and some unexpected twists in the plot. It seemed a little slow at first, but it was such a good movie. I'd recommend watching this movie when you're having a bad day.
