Our central A/C system broke down at the beginning of the hottest weekend of the year; it was in the area of 115+ outside. Not good. Our ranch style house was built in 1957 and insulation didn’t seem to have been a priority with the developer as our place seems to be essentially devoid of any. It quickly became over 95 degrees in my living room. I needed a portable A/C unit quick to at least make the bedroom tolerable until the central system could be fixed. After a quick look on the Best Buy website, I decided a 14,000 BTU model would do the trick in the short term but when I arrived at BB the only unit still available was this one at only 10,000 BTU. I could order one of the more powerful units, but then I’d have to wait several business days for delivery. Still, I was hoping this could at least make the 10’ x 12’ bedroom endurable. Before I proceed, I really must warn you. The manufacturers of these type of units all stress portability. Sure. Be advised that this is extremely subjective and qualified! Technically, yes, it’s indeed portable. But so is your washing machine if it has casters. And so is a piano. Out of the box, the actual unit itself seemed decent enough, but unfortunately two major shortcomings were immediately obvious. 1) the duct hose supplied is about 4 feet long when extended, which is far too short for flexibility (no pun intended) of location. 2) the power cord is, likewise, far too short. If you are not fortunate enough to have a window that isn’t too high from the floor AND has a power outlet in its very immediate vicinity, you are going to be right out of luck (actually, SOL). If you’re thinking, “No problem, I’ll get a longer length of duct hose and just use an extension cord” then you’d be wrong. The manual very specifically states that using another duct hose and/or a longer length of hose will end up causing a malfunction. It also states very plainly to NOT use an extension cord. I was lucky and the window/power outlet arrangement I had to deal with was just barely within the dimension parameters to allow the unit to be connected. I had to rest the unit on a small table to make this arrangement work and had to place a towel on the table so the casters wouldn’t allow the unit to simply roll off at the slightest provocation. I suppose I could’ve upended the unit and removed the casters, but I wasn’t inclined to do that. After fiddling with the supplied window kit, I had the ducting hose set up and faced the moment of truth. I turned it on and enjoyed a nice blast of cold air. Success! The temperature window displayed ’99.’ Could that be right? Maybe… it was awfully hot in that room. As the display only utilized two digits, it may well have been hotter. Yikes! I figured, “Oh well, in an hour or two at most it ought to be more bearable.” After twelve hours – yes, that’s not a typo – it had cooled down overnight to a mere 83. Did I mention I also had the room’s 52” ceiling fan going at its fastest speed and two stand-alone fans belting away? In conclusion, I would have to say that this machine is a step up from just opening the fridge door and sticking your head in, but not by much. If you have a very small room and aren’t dealing with such extreme temperatures, you may find this adequate. I will be returning this and exchanging it for a more powerful unit once they are in stock.

    Worth It!

Ok let me be clear i gave it 5 stars for a variety of reasons and i will get into it now amd the Pros of this unit far out weigh the cons Pros: I do live streaming online in my 130 sqr ft room so small and i was affraid the audio produced by this unit but was not disappointed, this unit though only 6 ft from my microphone doesnt trigger it at all even when compressor kicks off. Unit being portable is really convenient and still allows me to make use of of the window on cool nights vs loosing it to a window unit. Run it minimum 5 hrs a day and am 3 weeks in and have yet to need to empty the water tray and this was my single greatest concern, if yours as well dont fear it this unit goes a long time before having to even think about it. My office is on the sunny side of the house and heats quickly along with all the computer equipment and monitors going and this unit does a great job keeping up even on days its 110 outside. Cons: I know i just said it does amazing in the high heat which it does but if your room is not properly insulated which mine is not it can struggle a little keeping the room cool but still maintains a solid 78-80 when 110 out but thats only time ive seen it struggle. Another issue for me at least is i found if back of unit is facing toward where you sleep or you are sitting behind it the unit is vastly louder with the back of the unit facing you, now that is only from the rear of the unit, front facing side has little noise pollution as its well proofed there as i said it doesnt even pick up on a professional grade microphone. Conclusion: I spent 3 months researching wall units and portable units, including multiple honeywell units, this by far is the only one that met my requirements amd it is meeting them splendidly and would not hesitate to buy another down the line and recommend to anyone i meet or know this exact unit and BTU rating. Yes Price tag is up there but using this for over a month now and i mean really working it, it has already earned its worth. Dont think because its pricey its just a giant paper weight, i found through 3 months of looking at Portable units you have no option but to spend a bit more but what you get is quality and comfort. 10/10 Honeywell and 10/10 for bestbuy having a solid review system in place to help make this purchase and i dont review items i purchase from anything, i am only doing this because from start to finish i have been very happy and impressed with this units quality and the info i was able to obtain from across multiple regions of the US to make a very informed decision on my purchase. I hope this yet long review is helpful for anyone else looking to purchase one of these units.

Ahhh good ol' summer of 2017! Think that's a great start for this review. Record setting heat temps in local area since 15 yrs ago. This AC unit is a slice of coolness I highly recommend! (Read the Instruction Book!) I had it set-up fairly quickly. It works outstanding, & talk about blowing very cold air... it does that too! :) My windows slide horizontally, not vertically. Set-up was quick, the little plastic pins that are suppose to 'hold' the three window pieces together.. worthless, toss 'em! So, here are some tips.... First, on the window itself, along with the window framing, use sticky-backed window installation, Cut to size for window itself, & inside window frame. Peel the protective backing off & adhere. (Keep the protective tape on the upper & lower (or sides, if your windows open vertically) pieces. This way you can remove the exhaust tube vent & still be able to close the window). Instead of using those 2 little push-in pins to hold the 3 pieces together... use small zip-ties to keep the pieces together! (Make note, on ALL 3 pieces, there are multiple holes, make sure you have ALL 3 window pieces w/ the multiple holes on one side!! Very important!) Next, once fitting is good, look on other side of the 3 window pieces.. you'll notice a single hole on 2 pieces. Get your cordless drill out, find right size bit to drill through the single holes (there are 2). Zip tie those as well. Now your window piece is solid, no wiggling, curving, etc. .Place the exhaust vent into window & close window. To keep it a very tight seal, use the window locks, the kind that screw to the window framing. I used 2, upper & lower. Nice tight seal, no outside heated air is coming in! Yeah!! I highly recommend you reading the manual. As you will have to drain condensation from the unit. When draining, unscrew bottom plug & remove (mine is red) the rubber plug. Drain, place rubber plug back into place & screw plug back on. Be careful not to over tighten.... it's plastic to plastic. I placed 1x2's under my unit's wheels to allow for air circulation under unit, as well as it makes it sooo much easier to get a small pan (I'm using the small drip pan from my toaster over ;) to drain the condensation from the unit). And there you have it!! AWESOME UNIT!! And yes, us women can do it all...lol! Highly recommend this A/C unit!! Also purchased the 4 year Geek warr.~ fix or replace @ N/C!!

Stands well above other Portable ACs

    Posted
    icurate

Over the past 6 years we have owned 5 different brands of portable ACs. 3 are currently being used and 2 have met their maker. We currently have a DeLonghi in our daughter's room that does a good job. The main benefit of this unit is that the cycling on/off is not so jarring it can wake her up. In our main room we have a Royal Sovereign which is loud and clunky but does a decent job of cooling. A portable AC rated at 10,000 BTUs is good for a medium sized room in a not very hot climate. We live on the coast in Los Angeles and this one does very well in a 12x15 room. We just had a heat wave where the outside temp got up to 85 and the humidity was around 70%. This unit took a while to cool down the room in the evening but not that much longer than our previous, 12,000 BTU unit. Another thing this was a good test of is how well it evaporates moisture. Too many units need to have the drip tray emptied after only a few hours of running in moderate humidity. We have not had to empty this one after almost 3 weeks and close to 100 hours of running. Pros- 1-Nice control panel that lights up to touch and shuts back off after a few seconds. 2-A beep that is loud enough to hear but not so loud that it wakes up my wife if I need to change a setting when she's asleep 3-Cools very well for its rated BTUs 4-Decent looking and not too heavy 5-Came with everything needed for set up Cons- 1- Display is a little too bright when it's on. It seems blinding in a dark room. But it does shut back off after a few seconds so it's not horrible. 2- It's just a little too jarring when the compressor turns on and off. Part of this is that the compressor and exhaust fan start and stop at the same exact time. Our DeLonghi and our old Everstar both offset these 2 so there isn't as much of a sudden jolt on or off. Having said that, it is no where near as jarring as the Royal Sovereign in our main room. Overall, I really have to sing the praises of this unit. It does a good job of cooling without making too much noise or taking up too much room. I've had units that had to have a permanent drain hose, some that are way too loud to use in a bedroom but this seems like a very well engineered and built unit. I am hoping to have this one for a long time.

    Great Portable AC Unit

I have read reviews on other sites concerning this particular unit and was at first apprehensive on buying it. There were a few complaints about the amount of noise it made and the cheap plastic used for venting. However, there are numerous web sites that rated this AC unit as one of the best so I decided to give it a try. I am actually very pleased with the unit. It does a very good job of cooling the room I purchased it for (about 250 sq. ft) and it does it with no trouble. I went with the 10,000 BTU unit because a lot of sites state that portable AC's are less efficient than window units so it is best to go a size up. With that in mind I am convinced that it could cool a 350 sq. ft. room with ease even on the hottest of days. As for peoples complaints that it is loud, it is an AC unit, what do you expect? On the positive side I believe that this unit is less noisy than a comparable window AC. With the fan on HIGH and unit cooling the peak decibel output I measured was 70. Looking at a DB scale this is just above the level of a normal human conversation. The unit is a bit on the large side so if you are cramped for space this may not be the unit you want to purchase. The controls are easy to use and navigate. I do like that you can set it to dehumidify without cooling, I think that is a big plus. You can also set it for the number of hours until it turns on and the temperature you want it to cool to. The remote is nothing special, very basic, but it works well so you don't have to get up from what you are doing to turn the unit on/off or adjust temperature levels. As for the bad side. This is a heavy unit, 68 lbs - over 70 in the box and the box is difficult to move alone. Also, the plastic used for the exhaust system is %$#@. The piece that plugs into the window kit cracked as I was installing it. The same piece doesn't fit well as other people have stated and if you wish could use a bit of duct tape to shore it up. I also would like to have seen the window kit come with a longer extension. One of the things you will need is insulation window tape. The window kit will NOT seal out the elements on its own.

    Great portable air conditioner

I bought this airconditioner for a top (third floor) condo bedroom in Menlo Park California. I knew it would get very little use, as the climate is dry and the ocean air cooled air arrives at night. But it can get rather warm in the afternoon. My major concern was how to vent it with only a sliding glass door as an option. The opening is 79 inches, and the solution was to use acrylic. I had a piece of acrylic cut to size.. 1/8 th inch thick so the connector would snap in. 6 inches by 79 1/2 inches, and I brought in the connector so they could cut the hole so it could snap in. I love tap plastics.. It looks like it is attached to a window.. And the price was less than $50. The unit is properly vented out the door now, and it starts cooling within a few minutes, taking the room to chilly in one hour.

This AC unit is wonderful! I had a small window unit in my bedroom before I picked up this one. The previous unit was a 10,000 BTU fridgidaire window unit. It was AWEFUL! It could not cool the room correctly, allowed hot air and bugs to get in. The unit wound up getting moldy from the excess moisture. I bought the Honey Well 12,000 BTU unit for my 500 sq ft sitting room last year. It is WONDERFUL! It keeps my room cool, doesn't have to be turned down past a normal room temperature, doesn't cause moisture in the air, doesn't allow bugs and heat to get into the room, is not bulky, and best of all, easy to install and uninstall if need be. Knowing that this product would be great for my bedroom, I purchased the 10,000 BTU for my bedroom. I LOVE it even more than the one in my sittingroom! I can turn it down and direct the air so that it hits me directly while I am sleeping or turn it up so that it hits the ceiling fan and causes it to move the air through the entire room. I REALLY like Honeywell over all. I actually purchased a Honeywell fan for my office years ago and it is still my favorite fan!
