Bought this air purifier to help a dog with allergies to pretty much everything. While I did notice the plasticky smell everyone else notices, it's not anything I wouldn't expect from a brand new product made entirely out of... Wait for it... Plastic. It moved a great deal of air, and was whisper quiet on every level below 4. What ultimately lead to me returning this product however, was its build quality. The first few nights it worked spot on with no issues, but after about a week I began to notice several mechanical noises from the machine; A low thrumming from the motor became persistant even on "sleep" mode, and was irritating enough to keep me awake at night. I was also able to hear the oscillating motor after a few days, which was a simple fix by turning it off when not needed. These are things that would have been acceptable in a less expensive machine, but with such a high asking price ($249.99 at time of purchase), I expected much higher quality. Another niggle was the insanely bright lights on the top of the unit- had to throw a washcloth over it at night so it didn't light the entire room up, as they are unable to be turned off. I cannot attest to thr quality of the air during my ownership because I lack the equipment and don't personally have allergies, and I did not notice a decline in the amount of dust at all. The electrostatic filter did begin to change from a bright white to a pale white over a few days though, and a close visual inspection showed what the filter was picking up. Overall, I'd rate it a 6/10. Had the price been lower I would have better tolerated these issues, but I expect much more quality when I'm being asked for much more of my money.

Over all it works pretty I ended up buying another one since they were on sale. I can notice that the air feels cleaner and more crisp. I really like the fact the filters are washable. I have had mine about a month now so I washed them the other day. I ended up using a blower to blow the main filter out and reduced the dry time a lot. I still had to lay it face down on a towel for about four hours to get it to dry all the way. A few things I don't care for the biggest on is the lights on the top are not dimmable or you cant turn them off while it is running so it is as bright as a night light. I have not been able to locate a replacement filter for the main filter it would be nice to get another main filter so I could pop that in and have the other one drying, I have not contacted the Honeywell yet to see if I could order one through them. I read a lot of reviews and a lot of them complained about the smell when you first use it, It did have an odor to it when I first used it, what I did was stick it in a room that no one was in I ran it on high for about four hours and the smell cleared up. I really wish I would have gotten the AirGenius 4 instead of AirGenius 5. the only two real diffrences is the five has a touch screen that looks nice and the five has an extra speed. Running it on its highest speed it is a little loud and we normally run ours on three or four. All in all I would buy it again and it is a good alternative to the hepa filter thype filters and really like the fact that I can was the filters instead of having to buy replacements.

Works ok. As a smoker, I wouldn't buy again.

Well, bought this in the Chicago area, so paid $300 for it out the door. Wish people who smoked reviewed this or at least people with fire places. For the first day, it seemed to do what I'd hoped for, make the apartment air fresher. Then after about a week, my wife and I noticed that walls in our entire living room, dining room and kitchen now have a light grey tint to them. As does our white painted butcher block top cabinets, table, chairs and island. Also our stove and refrigerator. Now if you run your finger on any surface, it will be black afterward. Not to mention, the "washable" filter doesn't rinse out at all. Tried many cleaning solutions, pressurized water, soaking... entire media is black and the air coming out of it doesn't seem an cleaner than the air going into it. Now we need to clean every single surface in our entire house and will probably need to repaint as there are many stories on line stating how nearly impossible it is to get walls clean after something like this has happened. The best you can do is clean it with something aggressive to remove as much smoke residue as possible and then prime/paint over it. We have since unplugged this thing (and the smaller version we bought for the office) and replaced them with a true hepa paper type forced air filter. So, my $300 "genius" purchase has cost me $600 so far and I haven't even bought all the items it's going to take cleaning and repainting! If you have allergies, don't smoke and don't have a fireplace, then give this a shot. It is pretty quiet on it's medium setting while moving quite a bit of air, nearly inaudible at it's lowest setting.

This allergy season has already been kicking me hard, and I had purchased a Winix cabinet HEPA filtered air cleaner last year, but it clearly wasn't up to the task. Pros: Quiet: The Noise level on sleep setting really is just at whisper level. Even on the highest setting it is about half the noise level of my Winix. Filter indicator: it has a display that shows the filter condition BEFORE It needs to be replaced or cleaned. This is a sore subject for me, as the previous unit I had would just stop working with a "replace filter" light. This is much better thought out. Effective for allergens: This is working very effectively at removing the pollen, which is my primary concern. Compact: The unit is heavy, but packs a lot of cleaning and very strong fans into a small cabinet. It is 1/3 the physical size of my Winix, but performs better on everything EXCEPT VOC's where the Winix unit does do a better job. Things like perfume or hairspray will linger longer with the Honeywell, but they DO go away. Cons: There are a lot of LEDS in this thing, all of which are really helpful for seeing at a glance what functions you've selected. That said; some people that require absolute darkness to sleep will find this a bit bright. It doesn't bother me, but I've seen reviews on the Winix air cleaner with fewer lights get pinged for too bright. YMMV.

      Extremely Expensive Tower Fan!

I purchased this from Best Buy 2 weeks ago for $179.99, used it for one week and took it back for a refund before the 15 day return policy was up. I noticed absolutely no difference in air quality and the filter didn't have a speck on it. That's way too much money for an oscillating tower fan. I smoke in my home and have 2 indoor cats. I placed the unit in my living room, per instructions 3 feet from the wall and not quite 3 feet from "my spot" on the couch, which is about 2 feet from where one of my cats' beds is. I ran it constantly, night and day, for 4 days, on high at night and medium or low the rest of the time. After running for 4 days and noticing no change in the air, I removed the cover and checked the filters, as clean as when I put them in the unit. Since my living room is 18x16 and can't be completely closed off from the rest of the house, I thought perhaps the unit was too small for the room and moved it into my bedroom. I let it run in there for 3 days with no noticeable change. Filter remained clean as a whistle. My opinion is that if the filter didn't show anything after running for a week in my house, it's not really filtering or purifying the air. I didn't need a tower fan.

I would recommend running the unit for a couple of weeks then checking the filter. I live with a chef who cooks with a lot of very pungent ingredients. Our HVAC sucks in air from the kitchen and dumps it in my room. I've been to 3rd world countries that smelled better than it did in my room! I was getting sick from the smell, and started breathing less deeply because it was so hard to inhale with how bad the air smelled. Every day I would open my window and try and air out my room. My bedroom window doesn't get much air and my room is a bit small. I did a little research and found this air purifier. Holy cow what a difference! I like that the filters can be cleaned and that I don't have to buy new filters all the time. This oscillates but I don't need that. It also has an ambient light at the base which I also don't need. Thankfully the lights on top aren't bright enough to keep me awake at night. It also has 5 different levels of cleaning so during cold season, it will kill germs and (potentially) keep you from getting colds/flu. I have literally lost weight because I can actually breathe deeply again. My only regret is I wish I had this years ago.

Attractive unit...easy to set up and use. Like the fact that it is quiet, however, I found that the unit emitted a terrible plastic odor which remained for approximately 2 weeks. Needed to run it constantly on high to attempt to reduce odor. It seems to clean the air but I have not had to vac the permanent filter yet, so I am unsure of just how well it can be cleaned. The big downfall is that you have to choose which filter to use. A hepa filter is included as well as a odor reduction filter. Would be nice to clear the air of odors while cleaning! Overall, I believe that this unit is comparible to other lesser priced units. The price point on this model can not really be justified as it does nothing different than lesser priced units. Very expensive for something that does nothing special but look nice.

My husband and I have been having a bad dust problem in our house, so we decided to splurge and buy this product. We found a sale at a competitor's store and Best Buy price-matched with no questions or fuss! There was a huge difference noticed overnight. The purifier is very quiet and have a comfortable air flow coming from it. It also smells clean- the odor reducer works very well. My only complaint is that the lights on the top of the machine are a little too bright, but I also prefer my room pitch black at night, so it may be a non-issue. I would very much rather have a clean room and it definitely does that! Very happy and worth the money not having to buy huge filters.
