Smarter Than a Lot of People I Know
|Posted .Our furnace, air conditioner and thermostat were all replaced in 2006, in a house built in 1985. I don’t remember if the thermostat wiring was replaced at that time or not. Our current thermostat is a very simple set-back thermostat that runs on alkaline batteries and does not use a C wire. I happen to have all of the manuals and installation instructions for all of our HVAC products, and that helps to sort out the installation and set-up process of this Honeywell thermostat. Our high-efficiency Trane brand furnace has a C wire terminal, marked “B/C”. The old set-back thermostat required four wires to hook it up, but luckily our thermostat wiring is a five-conductor cable. To install this Honeywell RTH9585 thermostat, I only had to utilize the unused fifth wire in the cable and hook it up to the appropriate terminal on the furnace circuit board and I had my needed C wire connection (this is a simplification of what I actually had to do, but in essence is what the end result was). This made me happy because if I had to use the alternative hook up with the green wire, I would lose the ability to use the fan continuously (according to the “C Wire Addendum” that comes with the User Guide) and that is something that I occasionally do depending on the season and the weather. When mounting the thermostat wallplate to the wall, check to see if either of the screw locations will hit a stud (one of mine did) as the included screws are long enough to pass through typical 1/2” thick drywall. If you just go ahead and drill two 3/16” holes for the drywall anchors, and hit a stud, the 3/16” hole drilled will be too big to use the screw by itself. If a hole lands on a stud, drill a 7/64” or 3/32” hole and you can use just the screw without using the plastic anchor. The thermostat body snaps onto the wallplate with a lot of pressure. I suggest snapping the thermostat on and off the wallplate numerous times before mounting the wallplate to the wall as this will make it easier to pull the thermostat from the wallplate in the future if you need to remove it. The one thing missing from this thermostat is a larger wallplate trim ring to cover holes left over from the old thermostat installation. I fabricated my own from a piece of sheet styrene purchased from a hobby shop (see picture). My old Lux thermostat came with one, and I’m guessing it would have cost Honeywell less than $0.25 to include one. Kind of an oversight on a $200 item if you ask me. Once you get over the wiring hurdle, installation, set-up and programming of this Honeywell thermostat is really easy. Their web site is well done, the instruction manual is well written, and the menus and walk-through on the thermostat itself are all exceptionally well done. Honeywell, whose name was once synonymous with home thermostats, I feel has been under pressure in recent years from a number of different thermostat manufacturers, but they have really redeemed themselves with this model. The only thing that is really missing is geofencing capability, but after doing some reading about this feature, I’m not so sure it is something I would find useful. I have had a few times where the app on my phone appears to be unresponsive to my commands. If I close the app and reopen it, it works fine, so I have gotten in the habit of closing it once I make my adjustment and then open it again in the future when I need to use it. We are also having a little difficulty figuring out how to set up my wife’s phone to allow her to make remote adjustments to the thermostat that is registered with my email address. I’m sure it is something simple we have overlooked, but it is a little frustrating nonetheless. The main thing I like about this thermostat versus the competition is all the information that is displayed on the screen “at idle”. When you haven’t used the thermostat for a bit, the display dims slightly, but is still very legible without needing to be touched. The following information is available on the “Home” screen without having to scroll through different displays and/or menus: current temperature, set temperature, outdoor temperature, both indoor and outdoor humidity, current time, and the time when the next programmed change takes place. A quick tap of the outdoor temperature gets you more current weather details and the forecast for 6 and 12 hours in the future - quick and easy when you are headed out the door and want to know the need for a coat or umbrella. The RTH9585 is a very full featured thermostat that can do just about anything a homeowner would want or need an HVAC controller to do. I’m going to just talk about the features for residential use. Business use is the other alternative, but I suspect most business owners will just have a contractor install a thermostat of the contractor’s choice and won’t go shopping for one on their own. Obviously the thermostat can follow a set schedule of temperature changes for each day of the week (meaning each of seven days can be different from the others), but you can also change from the typical four schedules per day to just two if that is all you need. There is a fan option to run randomly about 35% of the time to circulate the air in the house. This is a nice option compared to having to run the fan continuously (which is still an option with this thermostat). There is a setting for the thermostat to change over automatically from heating to cooling. There are reminders for the filter and humidifier pad. You can set a vacation hold until a certain date and time and the thermostat will heat or cool your house for your return. There is a mode to allow you to clean the screen for 30 seconds without disturbing any settings. There is a lock mode that allows partial lockout (only temperature can be changed) or full lockout and you can also set a password to unlock the thermostat. Honeywell’s “Smart Response Technology” that anticipates ramp-up time to reach a given temperature by a specific time gives you the option of turning this feature off. The display can show Fahrenheit or Celsius temperatures and 12-hour or 24-hour time with Daylight Saving Time turned on or off. There are also settings specific for using the thermostat in a business setting. The thermostat will work without Wi-Fi, but you do lose some of the features. You can also set your account to send you email alerts if the temperature or humidity go outside of the range you specify. The phone app also gives you the option of voice control and the Honeywell Total Connect Comfort App will interface with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT, and SmartThings. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, you can change the color of the screen to match your decor. Ours is set on black background with white lettering as I like easy-to-read contrast since I have gotten older. I can recommend this thermostat to the average and above do-it-yourselfer and I don’t think there is anyone who would be disappointed with the feature set this product offers.

Good thermostat for a vacation home.
||Posted .I really like the way this thermostat is laid out and how it functions. I purchased it for a family vacation home. It allows me to easily check the temperature in the house and change it as required remotely. I like that it can be changed to a schedule when the house is occupied and a static temperature when it's unoccupied. I do wish there was a temperature spread mode that could switch between Cool and Heat automatically that didn't require using the schedule but it is easy enough to just check the app and make changes as required. The app is quite easy to use once you become familiar with it. If you want to get more info at a glance, you can go to the website. The website makes programming a schedule much easier. There is also a way to allow others to access the account so my family members can set temps before they arrive at the house. The display indicates not only indoor temperature, it also indicates the outdoor temperature as well as indoor/outdoor humidity. It was fairly easy to install, however, the video and instructions explaining the onscreen setup didn't match what was on our screen 100%. There was an extra question regarding the efficiency of our fan unit. Our fan unit is over 20 yrs old and there was no efficiency rating on the unit that I could find. I also couldn't find the manual online. So I had to guess that it was under 90% efficient. Additionally, the touch screen is not very responsive. Sometimes it takes 3-5 pokes of the screen to get a touch to register. That is my biggest issue with this thing. I really like the larger always-on screen. I use a Nest thermostat in my office and like the look of the Honeywell and the info it provides better than the minimalis Nest display. It is also easier for my elderly father to operate. The Honeywell was also $50 less expensive than the Nest when I made my purchase. All in all I would recommend it. Especially to people who are already familiar with Honeywell thermostats like me.

Very Nice
|Posted .I'm very happy with this thermostat. It was *fairly* easy to install and set up. I recommend setting aside a couple of hours for the install. It most likely won't take that long to install start to finish, but I would allow extra time in case you run into any issues, or if you are not familiar with installing a thermostat. Honeywell's instructions are great and easy to follow. I also went to their YouTube channel and reviewed their video on how to install. They are very well done and easy to follow. The one thing you want to make sure you have is a C (common) wire. This powers the unit. Our home was built in 2016 so I thought for sure we'd have one. When I first removed our existing programmable thermostat, however, I only found 4 wires and not the 5 recommended. There was a way to use the G (ground) wire for the power both in the instructions and on their channel, but it our case it would not have been easy to do. Fortunately, I did find a C wire back in the wall and was able to install with no further issues. Setting up the unit once installed was a snap. It was just following the questions on screen. It was simple to register the unit with Honeywell as well (this is required for remote access to the unit). You are able to set up multiple people to use the thermostat remotely or you can limit it to just one account. You can also download their app and control it via your phone/tablet. You can lock the programming with a PIN if needed (though you don't get to choose the PIN). You can set up temporary holds as well as permanent holds for controlling the temp, or you can program multiple times and temps so that everything is automated. It is also an Alexa skill. I have set that up to use with my Alexa, but I've not tried it yet. I would highly recommend this unit.

5 wire install
||Posted .Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed.Great thermostat. I had a 4 wire setup, which worked, however the fan option is not available because of it. I never really use the fan only option, so I hooked it up. I love the custom color options. The schedule is great!, I hope it saves me some cash.

Stop wasting your money with other brands
||Posted .Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed.I know Honeywell brand for so long, I work in the technical field in different pharmaceutical and other job site. I almost spend almost $200 dollar in a Nest Thermostat, I refuse to pay that amount! I know this brand so well that, I rather to give them a try because I know the quality and the engineering behind it. Installation took me around 15min, configuration and set up, around the same, download the app, 5min. Also have a -/+ 3 degrees for your offset in case the reading is. it that accurate, same with Humidity have -/+ 12, very easy and friendly to use, I highly recommend this product.

Honeywell Smart Thermostat
||Posted .Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed.I love my Honeywell Smart Thermostat. I like being able to change the background colors. I’m not sure if I like red better, or black. It’s wonderful to be able to check the status from my phone. I also like not having to climb the stairs to see what the temperature is.

A NICE UPGRADE TO THE PREVIOUS MODEL
|Posted .I had the previous model of this Honeywell Thermostat, a green background with black text. This new model is a nice upgrade to that unit and I'll explain why in a moment. Please know that the upgrade path from that model to this model took only minutes, because the wiring issues were worked out last time and the labels/and inputs are the same, just in different spots. The screw holes are even in the same spot so re-mounting the new one in the old spot was super easy. As for what is nice on this upgrade, the silver looking bezel, color screen, humidity level inside, the temp and humidity outside, and the much easier sized touch screen area to work with. It is overall smaller, but the areas to touch are so much easier to select. Programming is such a nice improvement - programming is so easy on this new model. If you review the pictures, you'll see how much nicer the new unit looks, but also how it is easier to read. The older unit was nice, but the little print was hard to read. With these units, the online access is amazing, allowing you to change the temperature through the app or the web. You can also change the system from heat to cool, or from cool to heat, etc. The system can notify you if the temperature rises above or below certain thresholds, if humidity is too high or too low, or if the system loses contact with the monitoring center online. After years of already having a Honeywell smart thermostat, I found my heating/cooling bills were a less as I used scheduling to turn the heating/cooling up and down vs. doing it manually all the time. You can count on saving money, because you get used to a certain set of temperatures vs. when you set it manually, it is easy to turn it up alot or down alot as sort of an impulse change vs. a schedule. Reliability of this has been amazing, and the value is paid back in convience, if not in utility bills. A quick story comes to mind over this summer when the temperature in our house went to the point where I have a notification set for, and because of this timely alert, I was able to get my A/C service company out - it was a Friday at 3pm and they happened to have someone in the neighborhood - this timely alert saved me from sweating all weekend until service came out on Monday. If I had a wish list, it would be that the outside weather forecast, which can be viewed through preferences, would show on the screen as maybe an alternating screen to the current temperature settings. I would also make the backplate just a bit bigger, like the older model, to make it a tad easier to wire. However, the wires are much easier to install, because of the press in wire sockets vs. needing a screwdriver. You can also remove the wires by pressing in on them with a ballpoint pen tip....very nice touch. In settings, you can also provide an offset, if you find you are used to a slightly different temperature or humidity level, so the system can adjust using this offset, and display the temperature as you are used to it. I found the temperature and humidity seems to match the multiple temp and humidity sensors I have scattered around my house. Buy with confidence, this is well worth the money, and I remember from my last one I put in, their tech support was superb when trying to work out my specific wiring concerns (heat pump with emergency heat). I didn't need tech support this time, it was an easy upgrade path.

Honeywell wi-fi smart color thermostat RTH9585WF
|Posted .We have been using an older model of Honeywell programmable thermostat for a few years and really liked it. This new thermostat is a huge upgrade that has color touch display, wifi and can be controlled using voice with an app. Setup - Setup was easy with all the included instructions. “C” wire accessory is included if you have an older system and does not have the wire to power on the thermostat. The backplate was easy to mount with clear markings of which wire goes where and took me less than 20 mins to replace the old with the new. Once the thermostat is mounted and powered on the on screen step by step setup was easy to follow to configure. Display - The display has a very nice touchscreen and the color can be adjusted based on your wall or home decor. You can easily select C or F display. Features - The advanced fan operation feature helps keep the temperature even across multiple rooms throughout the home and it automatically switches from heat to cool based on the temperature settings. It also provides local weather and temperature and manages the home with respect to outside weather. Intelligent Alerts & Voice Control- You can customize the thermostat to alert you when there is a drop on increase in temperature or humidity and it works as expected. With the app for IOS or Android you can see the temperature on your phone and even control it using voice commands. This is an excellent product from Honeywell and delivers as expected.

Q: QuestionHow do I know if I have a C-wire in the wall where my old Honeywell thermostat was? Is there a way to make this work if I do not have a c-wire?
Asked by Roberto.
- A:Answer You can use the fan or “g” wire to Power it.
Answered by TVannouncer
Q: QuestionWhat are installation instructions & wiring requirements?
Asked by Sitruc.
- A:Answer You will need to have a "C" wire in order to use this. If you do not have one, there are additional instructions on how to wire it and it includes the wire you can use to jump it in your thermostat. If you have minor DIY skills, you should have no problem with the installation.
Answered by TechFan
Q: QuestionHow can I determine if I have the "C" wire? Do I have to remove the existing thermostat?
Asked by Lee.
- A:Answer You will need to remove your old thermostat to determine if you have a C wire. Just because it's there don't assume it's real. You will need your system powered on to test. You need to CAREFULLY, using a volt meter set on AC, measure the voltage between the R ( could be RC in some cases) wire and the C wire. You should see 24 Vac. It could be as high as 29 Vac when nothing is running, and nothing will be with your thermostat removed. If you have the voltage then the C wire is real and you can continue. If not consider having your system updated to include it.

Q: QuestionHi. I have a regular Honeywell thermostat. I know for sure it uses AA batteries. Does this mean that I don't have c wire and then I won't be able to install the new smart thermostat?
Asked by Mike.
- A:Answer You will need to confirm if you have a common wire or not. You can not tell simply by the thermostat needing batteries or not. Some thermostats used the batteries for display illumination or to hold the program memory in case of a power outage.
Answered by TonyM
Q: QuestionHoneywell says we need a redlink module for the internet interface. Instructions do not mention it and all the reviews says easy to install and program so I need one?
Asked by redlink.
- A:Answer Honeywell RTH9585WF wirelessly connected to my home Wi-Fi network just like a tablet or laptop. No additional modules were required.

Q: QuestionFor those who use this thermostat for both heat and AC, say it’s July and you have the nighttime temperature set to 72 until you leave at 8am. Then it’s set for 78. Will the heat go on to make up that 6 degree difference? I know it shouldn’t but..:.
Asked by WRJW971.
- A:Answer Hi there! The Honeywell Smart Color Thermostat does have the ability to be setup for Auto Changeover; this will allow the thermostat to turn on heating or cooling as needed based on your schedule setup. However, the heating and cooling set points must be at least three degrees apart and the heating set point is unable to be set above the cooling set point. So for your example, if your cooling set point is 72 degrees, you would only be able to set your heating set point to 69 or lower. To answer your question, this thermostat will not turn your heat on to bring your home up to the 78 degree set point you have chosen for the next scheduled period. It will allow the house to naturally get that warm if it is able to, and if it does, the thermostat will turn your cooling on to maintain the 78 degrees if necessary. I hope this helps!
