      P.O.S. Gear drive assembly broke

      Posted
      Mike

I bought this Hoover carpet cleaner and used it three times. It said it was recommended for pets, which I have, and a lot of carpeted area to clean. It was awesome the first (only) three times I was able to use it. Went to use it today and the belt started smelling like it wss burning. So I took the belt cover off to see what was wrong. Well, this eventually turned into removing every single screw on the lower unit where the brushes are located. I cleaned it thoroughly, removed all hair and possible hang ups. Still didn't work. Finally found that the gear box assembly was seized. The main drive belt turns a shaft which is attached to another belt that turns the rotary brushes to clean the carpet. This belt passes over a ball bearing to assist in tension but the problem is that it also has water and soap from the floor passing it over too. With dirt and grime and liquid, well the bearing got clogged and jammed, the secondary belt created heat from friction and caused the gear shaft to partially melt the plastic gears inside the plastic gear box...at least that is what I was able to ascertain. Well this shaft goes into a plastic housing with plastic gears and a little but of grease and it's not a closed cell either, so how does the manufacturer propose to keep debris out of it?? Once I had it completely dissambled and cleaned and found the problem, I brought it back to Bestbuy to return it. The general manager told me that he could not return it due to it being in pieces and dissambled. After a few arguments back and forth, which to his credit he held his cool very well with a very disgruntled customer, I reluctantly reassembled it on one of their countertops in the appiance section, out of the way of customers shopping and in peace and quiet. No one bothered me while I did the work which was nice. The GM did offer to help carry the pieces, but my disgruntled self told him that I was able to carry it.from the parking lot like this and told him I thought I could manage making it around the corner. He did help difuse the situation, but he never did come back around once I was back at the customer service desk to thank you or dont ever come back or even have a nice day. Overall, dont buy this piece of junk carpet cleaner.

Gasket fails = poor suction. Not safe for berber!

      Posted
      Heather

I was happy with this machine, seeing the dirty water stream up through the nozzle, until I got to the end of the first tank and had to empty the dirty water. Removing the dirty water return tank was easy enough, and the lid popped right off to empty it. But then I tried to close the lid, and the rubber gasket embedded in the lid fell off. I tried turning it upside down to close it. The gasket popped out again. The lid has an inexplicable curved shape that causes the gasket to pull up in the low spots. The gasket is just a bit too small, so when you press it into the grooves on one side, it pops out on the other. It took me at least 15 minutes to get the gasket to seal properly, and that required lots of masking tape and rude language. I had to dry the rim of the tank lid with a towel so the tape would stick, then used little strips of tape to hold the gasket in place until the lid and tank were seated. Then I slowly pulled the strips of tape out. Now, this ordeal would be bad enough if I only had to do it once at the end of each cleaning session. But it needs to be done every.single.time. that the little tank needs to be emptied. No thank you. There is a way to tilt the tank sideways and let the water pour out through the inlet without opening the lid, but this is very messy and doesn't completely empty the tank. The failure of the gasket to seal properly causes poor suction, so the carpet is left very wet. I shampooed one area in the afternoon, expecting it to be dry by the next afternoon. I pointed two fans at the carpet in that room overnight and through the next day, and kept the air conditioner on to dehumidify the air. The carpet was still noticeably damp more than 24 hours later. Another important warning is to avoid using this machine on berber (closed loop) carpet. The brushes un-twist the fibers and tear them out of the loops, so a tight berber carpet will develop a layer of fuzz on the surface. Berber carpet requires a steamer that has removable or disabled brushes. I didn't notice this fuzzing until the carpet was nearly dry the next day. The damage was especially bad in the high-traffic areas that got a second pass with the machine. The hand tool actually had quite good suction and dirty water recovery, after I managed to the gasket seated properly in the tank. I used it to pick up a surprising amount of water from a few small spots where the machine had already picked up as much as it could in floor mode. After cleaning a few small spots and the first several steps on the stairs, the sprayer nozzle on the hand tool stopped spraying and started dribbling pitifully. The dribble slowed to a few scattered drips. I had to resort to using a spray bottle to spritz the shampooed sections with clean water so I could vacuum up the suds before I gave up completely.

We were in need of a carpet scrubber and decided to see what options Best Buy had. They price match most products and their customer service is phenomenal. We pick out this model because it has more brush heads than a similar model. It was very easy to put together but there were issues from the start. Another review mentioned a gasket issue on the dirty water tank, same thing for us. It's frustrating and irritating but not completely a deal breaker. It'll make you not want to touch the thing anymore but it's a gasket, we're men, we figure out solutions. Our deal breaker was when it frayed our carpet. We vacuum the floor, put everything together, try the rug scrubber on carpet and notice all this debris and fuzz stuff. We have a couple of dogs so didn't think much right away. But the fuzz just kept on coming. In a 3x3 section, two handfuls of this wet fuzz. Closer inspection, we determined it was carpet fibers. We had a hard time believing it so we let it sit over night. The carpet was still wet the next day. The carpet is now a different color and texture. At some point, we'll need to buy a new room's worth of carpet to fix the damage this cleaner caused. I'm sure the scrubber works well for some, maybe even most. If you have high carpet, do not use this. Short carpet would likely be ok but I'd still be concerned about the lack of water the machine sucks, the ill fitted gasket and how loud the machine is. Pros: appearance, size, weight, ease of use, cool factor Cons: it ate my carpet, nuisance gasket on water tank, hard to clean, very loud, lack of suction, and it ate my carpet. Best Buy returned the machine and I purchased another that has met my standards.

      Worst carpet cleaner

This is my third hoover carpet cleaner. My first two worked awesome and each lasted about 5-6 years. This one went about 2 weeks and then broke. This was a day outside of the Best Buy return policy so I was stuck with the unit. I took it to be repaired and they kept it for a month and a half and never fixed it. They ended up sending me the part and I fixed it myself. Then, the seal on the dirty water tank always comes off, and I have to put it back in place with nasty carpet water all over it. And just when I thought the suction could not be any wors out of this unit, I find that the main suction part has come apart at the seam and is now sucking air from the side of the unit instead of the bottom(where it should be sucking up water). I wish I would have just gotten the same model I had before. But I thought this would have been a better machine. The mother on this machine is so weak that when I first start it up, it will bog down for a couple of seconds till finally the brushes start to roll. And lastly. The customer service has been a nightmare. Never in my life have I cantacted customer service and they automatically start treating me like I did something wrong to damage the unit. Making derogatory remarks and downplaying every comment I make. They found a way to belittle everything I said, even when I asked the representative "how are you today" they replied with "is there something I can help you with". Oh well, I'm sure this is my last ordeal with this company anyway.

So far, I've only had this cleaner for close to a month, but I have used it on a decorative rug and the carpeting I have on the 2nd floor of my home. Overall, it did a pretty good job - much better on the low pile carpet than the decorative one that I have which is more like a Berber type. Both of my carpets were pretty dirty and I was surprised how much dirt I got out of my low pile carpet - even after I went through it with a rinsing pass it was still pulling dirt out of the carpet. One thing that I did notice is that it goes through water pretty fast, so best recommendations is to apply water in the push direction only and then suck it back up when you pull the unit back to you or otherwise you will be soaking the carpet pretty well. 2.) I didn't fill the formula tank all the way with formula since it goes through it very fast. I just filled it half-way and the other half with water. That was plenty of formula to clean the carpet. The down-side to this unit is the gasket for the water recovery tank cover. Its too small to lay completely flat within the grooves of the tank. And, if you put the tank cover back on without noticing that the gasket isn't sealing correctly, it wont pull the water back of the carpet properly as the gasket isn't sealing and creates a vacuum leak. IF you find that happening, just look at the recovery tank and most likely you will see the gasket hanging down a little within the tank. All you have to do is pull the tank back out, take the cover off, re-seat the gasket on the lid and hold it with your fingers when you go to put the lid back on and then you should be fine. I'm suspecting that a lot of people that say the unit isn't sucking the water back up is having this problem. *****Hoover, your engineers need to investigate this problem and correct it.***** Or, I just might have a bad gasket.

Purchased this cleaner on a great sale with high hopes. My first run with this machine was impressive! The water in the dirty tank was black and i could visibly see the difference in the carpet. After the third changing of the water tanks, i noticed it was not sucking up nearly as much dirty water as the previous runs. i had read the reviews about the gasket but i brushed them off as i am pretty handy and knew it had to be their user error. However, i noticed as i was almost finished that the dirty water was leaking as i was lowering the handle at an angle to clean. i took off the dirty water tank to ensure that the gasket was sealing correctly. it was placed on there properly and appeared to seal. However, it did not. When i was finished, i began to clean the machine. I spent as much time cleaning the machine as i did my carpet. Removing the roller to get behind to clean the cover was an absolute fool's errand. After realizing the issue with the gasket and the difficulty cleaning the machine, i decided to return it. I was truly disappointed and if Hoover had just addressed this issue, they wouldn't have so many negative reviews.

We have carpet........and 3 kids. They do not go well together. The carpet is always needing a thorough cleaning and renting a cleaner can get expensive and a hassle to pickup. I saw this one had pretty good reviews, so I bought our first cleaner. It got out every stain that was possible to be cleaned (excluding permanent markers and gum! haha). It exceeded my expectations in the cleaning category. Now, for the downsides. I believe all of these have been commented on, but do not detract from it being an excellent cleaner. First, it uses a LOT of cleaner solution. I don't think this will be different with any other product. I'm assuming that it requires as much in order to get the carpet cleaned. This could be a negative, or it could be nothing at all. But, be prepared to buy a LOT of cleaning solution in bulk if you plan to clean several rooms. Secondly, the cord is short. This was mentioned by others and can be remedied by getting an extension cord. If you have a large room, or try to pass through 2 in one clean, it can be a small hassle. Lastly, and I think this is my only REAL complaint, are the small fluid containers. They run out fast! Sometimes you have to reload and drain both canisters 2-3 times per room. And they don't require attention at the same time, causing more downtime. Overall, I still recommend the machine. Thanks to it, my soiled carpet that I thought I'd have to replace, looks new again! I've used it about 5 times, approx. 3hrs total, so it'll need more use before I can say that it holds up well.

For a moderate-use household unit, this isn't bad. We've blown through similar Bissell products & thought we'd give this Hoover a try. THE GOOD - no tool assembly out of the box. Super easy. Love it. The water tank and cleaning solution reservoir have pretty good top-fill openings with very accessible caps. The dirty-water container detaches pretty smoothly, easy to empty, and can be a little tricky to click back into place but overall not bad. THE BAD AND UGLY. This is what really killed it for me personally. After you're all done with the rug, you can rinse out the main water tank and even the dirty-water tank without much trouble. HOWEVER, the rollers are a whole other mess. IF you have a pet (I have a large short-hair dog (Doberman)) the roller unit does not detach. I lift the whole cleaner, invert it upside-down in a deep sink, then by-hand dig out all the hair boogers and clumps while running water over the roller brush and manually turning the rollers. That's a bit of an exercise and a big mess. If you don't have the luxury of a utility deep sink - Eww. You won't want to do this over your kitchen sink, that's for sure. In closing - Price was far. Filling and using the cleaner is simple. The major downfall is the clean up is almost more of a chore than cleaning the rug itself. Recommend Hoover design a detachable roller unit/suction head assembly for rinsing off after using and this rating would leap up to 4 or 5 stars immediately.
