    Synopsis

    Hope Floats
Actor/director Forest Whitaker (Waiting to Exhale) helmed this romantic drama about a one-time high-school beauty queen who returns to her hometown of Smithville, TX. The Steven Rogers screenplay begins in Chicago, where blonde Connie (Rosanna Arquette, uncredited) appears on a trashy daytime talk show and tells a nationwide TV audience about her affair with the husband of her best friend, Birdie Pruitt (Sandra Bullock). Walking into the ambush, Birdie is paraded forth for a public humiliation as Connie's claim is confirmed by husband Bill (Michael Paré). Birdie and her young daughter, Bernice (Mae Whitman), then move back to Texas to live with Birdie's eccentric mother, Ramona (Gena Rowlands), a taxidermist who has filled the house with stuffed animals. Since most of Smithville saw the TV show, embarrassment keeps Birdie sitting around the house in her pajamas; however, her moment of glory as the homecoming "Queen of Corn" has not been forgotten by handyman Justin Matisse (Harry Connick Jr.), the first guy who kissed her back in high school, so a romance soon begins. "Just give hope a chance to float up and it will," says Birdie. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

Hope Floats and Sandra Bullock shines in what might have been a maudlin three hankie rom-com. Humiliated on national TV (by Ricki Lake, no less) a former prom queen/cheerleader retreats to her Texas hometown to salve her wounds. Her stalwart, eccentric mother (the always terrific Gena Rowlands of The Notebook & John Cassevetes muse) allows her a suitable time before forcing her to confront the fact that her former seemingly ideal life is over. But moreover she finds out that not only have the townfolk & her former friends all seen the Lake debacle--would she care for a copy?--but they harbor resentment for her high school popularity which she flaunted. Add to the mix she lacks any job skills & has a daughter (a young Mae Whitman--Parenthood) who blames her for the divorce & her daddy abandoning her. While all this may seem soapy this is Sandra Bullock--the only the watchable reason even in the 1/2 star All About Steve. Soon she tosses the tissues, hitches up her denims, finds her inbred Texas resolve & begins to reinvent herself. With the Bullock smile, charm & her physical comedy ability as assets she charges ahead. Mother Gena dabbles as matchmaker--which introduces Harry Connick,Jr. to the proceedings. Connick displays an easy, natural charm, though his character seems to portend his American Idol attitude. Though resistant to his overtures at first, she welcomes a much needed friend. Despite several more emotional bumps she find that Hope Floats.

Not a lot of depth, mildly entertaining

This movie was about a single mother struggling to overcome hardship. She has a difficult relationship with her daughter, her own mother and her cheating husband. I thought the movie moved along well. It was sad at times. Harry Connick becomes the love interest to the reluctant Bullock. The two have decent chemistry. The plot does not have a lot of depth but the movie is "entertaining" if you are entertained by watching characters overcome personal struggle.

WE loved the movie and the DVD was in very good shape. We don't care about the extras that come on a DVD is the only reason I didn't put excellent. We never look at them. WE do enjoy the movie. The little girl really does a marvelous job, especially when her Dad leaves her behind. I really like the way all the actors act. They are very convincing and you can feel what you are supposed to fee. The cinimatography is great too.

Directed by Forrest Whitaker. Sandra gets embarrassed on national tv, heads back home, doesn't get along with her mom. Big high school girl heads back to small town USA, and gets a taste of her own medicine. Reluctantly she goes out on a date with Harry Connick Jr. Finds love and realizes there's no place like home.

I am a Sandra Bullock fan. I got the Blu-ray version of this movie. There wasn't much additional info, but I don't mine so much. Love movies are one of my favorite types of movies. As for me I had to add this movie to my collection.

Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick Jr have great on-screen chemistry, and the kids in the movie are perfectly cast. Keep a Kleenex handy, and enjoy laughter, tears, and a happy ending.

I prefer Action, Thrillers, Horror movies BUT once in awhile I will find myself liking movies like this one. I love it, one day I will live in a little town as such.
