A: No they can not be used like traditional joy cons. They don’t have an internal battery or any of the motion sensors. They have to be connected to the switch at all times in order to function.

Switch grips FTW
This a must have if want to game on the go. The thumbsticks and triggers are much better and grip is more comfortable than what comes with the switch.
