If you're looking for a computer that will let you play Minecraft, use Photoshop, and generally be an all-purpose computer, look elsewhere. However, if you want a very basic, minimal-distraction computer, this could be the one for you. I haven't had this one very long; I actually traded in a Windows-turned-Ubuntu laptop for this last night. That being said, so far I love it! I bought this to just do simple tasks like email, word processing, etc. I knew coming into it that I wasn't going to be able to do any of my design work; that's what I have my desktop and iPad for. But for a quick email, text, or some basic photo editing, this is a great little machine. You just have to know what you're getting into with the Chrome OS; it's very very basic and relies on the Chrome browser. There's no installing apps like a typical computer. If you're willing to sacrifice that, and are okay with finding a site that does what you need it to, this is great!

Aesthetically pleasant, the lappie is functionally on form. I wish it was a pentium or quad-core in proportion to the size. But no complaints though.

I wanted an inexpensive 14-inch laptop to replace (for most but not all uses) my bulky and heavy 15.6" Dell Windows laptop purchased in 2013. Originally I had planned to purchase a Windows laptop with SSD and no optical drive, but after some research I quickly learned that for $200 you can do much better with a Chromebook than a Windows system. (I also have another 15.6" Windows laptop for work, 11" Acer Chromebook, 10" Samsung Tab, Fire 8 HD, and of course the cell phone - and each of these devices has its niche.)
Overall I am very pleased with this unit. Performance is good for everyday light use such as web browsing, and the size is perfect for that use; I haven't used it for much else. Battery life seems acceptable, though it is a little concerning that currently the meter says 83% left with 6:17 remaining, whereas a little while ago it said 87% with 7:44 remaining and I have not changed the intensity of my activity on it between those readings. That is quite the exponential drop-off. But when battery life is critical (and when physical space is at a premium) I can use the smaller Chromebook or a different device.
The screen looks nice for what it is. I have no problem with the resolution: I was coming from a larger-screen laptop with the same resolution, so this was actually an upgrade. The major caveat I will insert here is that the screen is NOT GLOSSY (BrightView) like the description says. Upon un-boxing this was a major disappointment and almost a dealbreaker for me. It seems difficult to find an inexpensive unit with a glossy screen these days. But most people seem to want the antiglare/matte finish now, and since I like the computer so much overall I decided to put up with it.
A couple other caveats: The case is kind of flimsy, so I am not sure how this will hold up physically over time; and there is only an microSD rather than full-size SD card reader, which originally was not my preference, but I do own several microSDs and maybe it was time to phase out the full-size anyway. And it IS nice to have the card fit all the way into the unit, unlike the full-size SD that slides only halfway into my other Chromebook.
SO, why did I rate this five-stars despite so many caveats? I don't know. I tend to be a negative writer, so take me with a grain of salt. But really, this is just a very pleasing device to use, I became comfortable with it immediately, and I think we will have some happy times together. So in the final analysis I have no real complaints.
Buy it.

My Third Chromebook

This is my third Chromebook. I love it. My first Chromebook was a small silver 11 inch, I kept it in a bag that I took back and forth to work and the screen cracked. My second Chromebook is just like this one. I've had that one since the beginning of 2015. In August of 2015 I took it to Geek Squad to have them replace the battery at no charge, it was still under warranty. I don't pay for protection plans. I bought the third Chromebook because the second one wouldn't stay on without the power cord being plugged in. After about 2 years it was time to get another one. I prefer Chromebook over other computers because of the price and the portabilitywhat is that. This thing is really light, slim, and very portable. I am using the app Dictanote right now to pen this review. It is a speech recognition app so all you do is speak and it translates. I also use Dictanote to write my papers. Apps can be downloaded easily from the Google Play Store on this device. It doesn't get bugs, it doesn't get viruses. I am a graduate student and the Chromebook works for all of my needs.

This is a great, basic computer for the price. Great size and instruction and I love the simplicity of Google Chrome.
My only negative is that I purchased this specifically for my dad as he only uses his laptop for email, the internet and PokerStars. :) In buying this for him, I found that you can't download the PokerStars app to play on the Chromebook, only on Windows machines. I write this here in case there are other apps/downloads that people might use that won't be compatible with Google Chrome. Otherwise, a great product!
A:No. Google Chromebooks do not use an operating system. Google web browser is your operating system here (so to speak). Google automatically provides updates. I've had my HP Chromebook for 2 years already and have nothing but good things to say about it.
A:No Windows. A chromebook is strictly for use on the Google Chrome internet browser. The Chromebook has a Google version of Word, Excel, etc. I haven't used any of it in much depth but you can definitely open a Word document and edit it but its functions may be limited. You cannot save/download software on a Chromebook. It's not made for that. It's made for basic use of the internet (any website you would normally go to on a daily basis). I've had mine for 2 years now and it's a great, fast device. It's good for people whose computer use is mainly things like Facebook, Banking, Netflix, Checking Email. I consider it just a tablet with a keyboard - in the shape of a laptop. There could be a little more to it that I'm not aware of but my use of it is very basic. Fits my needs.
A:I ordered it, all things point to a windows laptop the model # the description in the headline, the what's included, the overview.
There is just one mention of a chrome book.
If it is a chrome book it's going right back and I'll bring the product description with me to the store and try and get them to match with something else.
Either way I'll let you know what it is when I receive it.
A:Microsoft word cannot be added. But both browser based word processors, such as Google drive, google documents and outlook one drive with word documents can be used to write for college.
I'd recommend this for an affordable alternative.
Lear which choice is best for you either Microsoft outlook's one drive and documents. Or Google's office suite. I used Google all through college and it got the job done, with honors. Pick one up, it's a great light weight affordable addition to the college library desktop PC. Once you learn to use them together.
