Good Value for a Budget LaptopPosted .
This is a budget laptop so you if you want 'great' cpu and graphics power pony up another $500 or more. First off, for those who don't like Windows 8 please google and download Classic Shell, it will put a start button on the regular desktop that you're familiar with. It's a safe, free and open software and your laptop will boot up the the 'desktop', not the 'tiles'. Then your laptop will behave just like Windows XP or 7. The only other issue is that when you play a video or music, etc., it will most likely open one of the 'tile' apps to play it(alt/F4 to close btw). So I downloaded Picasa as my photo viewer and iTunes for my music player(or you could use Windows Media Player). The secret is to right click on your file and set your default program that you want to open it in the future. But that's enough about Windows 8. This laptop is a good value. plays online videos just fine, fast to boot up, and is pretty snappy running programs. I will be adding another 4GB of RAM to help performance. I immediately uninstalled Norton's Antivirus and downloaded AVG Free. If you need an Office Suite download Open or Libre Office, they are free and suit most needs. It comes with CyberLink's PowerDVD to watch DVD movies so you are set there, as well as CyberLink burning software. I edited some photos in Photoshop and it worked just fine. It's just that this laptop will do things a bit slower than your high-end laptops. Video editing and photo editing can be done but if you do that a lot you'll probably be happier will more power. Gaming wise, so-so at best, depending on the games. The sound is tinny but what do you expect; earbuds sounded good. The 'HD' webcam?, not. Not very clear but you could always buy a better one. I wish it had a plug for mic AND headphones so if you have a headset with 2 plugs you'll need to get an adapter. Wireless works good and the USB3 ports are a plus. Overall, this laptop will get the job done, for the price and features I give it 2 thumbs up. (and yeah, no backlit keys that I can find to turn on). No big deal. As I have a decent desktop PC for the heavy stuff I'll be using this for more casual/portable use.I would recommend this to a friend

so far so goodPosted .
Had this pavilion for two weeks now and I really like it. It took the place of a Sony Vaio that I passed on to a family member. Always been an Intel guy with all other computers so I was a little sketchy about the AMD processor. The A8 5550 falls in between Intels I3 and I5 processors after some research, which is very good for the price. The scrolling up and down on the touchpad is somewhat awkward for me. and sometimes when I swipe from one part of the screen to another kinda fast, the text changes size. I'm not sure what that's about but sure it's part of Win8 Just don't know how to turn that off. Just a little about Win8. I don't have to deal with the metro screen if I don't want to. You can have it boot directly to a regular desktop screen with a little adjustment and I downloaded a start button from stardock.com. The metro screen is really the only thing I don't use in Win8. Everything else is pretty straight forward for an intermediate user. This laptop comes with some decent software like cyberlink burning program and HP connected music. I still use ITunes because of being tethered to my Iphone. When I bought this computer there was only one review on bestbuy about it and he thought it was pretty good. Reading all the others that have been posted since everyone seems satisfied including myself. With the 17" screen that has ok color dynamic, the processor speed, and evn the nice iodized silver top, it's a laptop that's hard to beat for $400. And I shopped a lot before I bought this.I would recommend this to a friend

Amazing price for a HP 17.3"Posted .
Like a couple others, I purchased this labtop without much research. I wanted a 17" inch labtop by a trusted brand and since I've owned an HP labtop/desktop for many years without issues, I figured this model was the way to go. I was a little hesitant on all the bad feedback on windows 8 but i figured to give it a shot since bestbuy has a 15 day return policy. I think my experience with windows 8 was different due to also purchasing a Logitech windows 8 mouse. This made all the horizontal/vertical swiping very easy to figure out. The other laptop I was looking at was an ACER 17.3" with windows 7 for about $449.99. I trust HP and don't know much about ACER and after 4 days of using this new laptop, I could not be any happier about my purchase. This PC in my opinion is better than many laptops priced in the $500 to $700 dollar range. Good luck with your purchase!I would recommend this to a friend

Great computer for the Price.Posted .
Once you get past the Windows 8 this computer is easy to work on. All of the LARGE ICONS on the front page are no different than the small icons that line up on the left side of your screen on all older versions of windows. To get past that all you do is press the windows button and it takes you to the normal Windows Screen. This Laptop has all the newer and update programs than my older Laptop. The speed on this computer is great. What I love about it is the ease of use, the Wi-Fi is stronger and picks up my wireless modem that is in the family room located in the back of the house. I have this Laptop in my bedroom which is located in the front part of my house. I have all 5 bars. Using the Wi-Fi I can send items to the printer that is located in the sewing room in the front of the house and it will print out right a way. I love the Large Screen when I use my Laptop to hook up to my Singer Sewing/Embroidery Machine to do embroidery. Having the larger screen helps out with being able to see the different stages of the embroidery patterns. I will be enjoying the Skype with the Web Cam. My Son is in the Army and he will be overseas. I will enjoy being able to talk with my son and being able to actually see him at the same time.I would recommend this to a friend

Awesome pc for the price!Posted .
I agree with the first reviewer on all counts, this is a great machine at a very affordable price. My biggest concern was connecting to my network but in less than a minute, I was able to locate and connect to my secure network, and it hasn't dropped the signal once. I had to reset my wireless network adapter frequently on my previous laptop, especially when someone ran the microwave for 30 seconds. I haven't had any issues with this one so far. I did post a question about the backlit keyboard because it was advertised as having one, but I've yet to figure out if it really does or how to turn it on. If it turns out it doesn't have one, I'll keep the machine because it's well worth the money.I would recommend this to a friend

Way more Bang for the Benjamins!!!Posted .
So although you are buying a budget laptop it is very nice and fast for most uses. I would have to say its an overall above average casual laptop after a few tweaks here and there so in other words you're getting more (just slightly) than what you pay for. People I think expect to get all the bells and whistles at this price but don't expect that. I will say after adding on extra RAM total of 8 now (I recommend taking out the installed kingston brand and installing 2-4gb Crucial DDR3 PC3 12800 1600mhz 204pin RAM) and not only will it boost the windows index score but it will also help the performance out overall. I personally think that the laptop is very quick after doing this and have no stutter or lag whatsoever!!! Although battery life isn't good I will say again what do you expect when you buy a 17.3 inch laptop just my two cents. The speakers aren't beats but who cares because honestly beats is just a selling gimmick and they aren't that great, I honestly prefer the DTS Dolby speakers in this plus you have the option to setup your sound within the settings along with AMD settings! Now wifi...it picks up wifi instantly with no issues. Overall in my opinion even though this isn't the best laptop, have the best battery life, or a backlit keyboard, or bluetooth you are getting a fantastic computer if not the best from best buy if you like a big screen like I do for editing photos! If anyone is stumped and needs a little help helping out the performance that I'm sure many think AMD doesn't have just comment and I can help out!I would recommend this to a friend

Great price valuePosted .
Picked one up the other day, plenty of diskspace and speed, put another 4gb of ram in for $44 bucks and its a blazing.. HDMI is sharp. Not a real fan of Windows 8, but HP has a start app installed on the taskbar to make the transition less painful for opening programs verses some goofy interface for touchsreens which I dont have anyway and I have to go through to get to my desktop now. You would think Microsoft would give you a option to turn it off.. just ventingI would recommend this to a friend

Wonderful entry level laptopPosted .
When I saw the price on this laptop, I couldn't believe it. I honestly thought it was a misprint, but it wasn't. Yes, it's an AMD processor and not an Intel i5 or i7, but that's about the only thing wrong with it. It comes with a huge screen, a good sized hard drive and even includes an HDMI-out port. The only thing I would change would be a blu-ray player instead of a DVD. Oh, and it only has 4GB of RAM, but it's expandable to 8GB. For once, the manufacturer did the consumer a favor. Instead of being a pair of 2GB sticks, it was a single 4GB stick. I bought another 4GB stick of DDR3 for ~$35 when I got the laptop and never looked back. Let's be honest. You're not going to render the deep space thriller on this thing, but if you're looking for a daily driver to do email, watch online videos and some light gaming, it's a perfect machine. And with the HDMI-out, it's super-easy to fire up Hulu or Netflix and watch them on your large-screen TV without having to get some other internet streaming device.I would recommend this to a friend

Q: QuestionExternal microphone connectionDoes this laptop can be connected by an external microphone?
Asked by Yaya.
- A:Answer It has a Headphone out/ microphone in combo jack. But, i tried the microphone jack on my regular headset (the one with two jacks). It worked fine. So yeah, I guess an external microphone would work on this laptop. However, you won't be able to connect headphones while having a microphone in.

Q: QuestionHow can I get this item with 8GB ram?I need this item with 8GB RAM, so how can I have it? Buying this item and 1 4GB RAM and put in by myself? Or Bestbuy can sell it for me with increased price?
Asked by Binh.
- A:Answer You could consider contacting a Geek Squad team near you to have them install the RAM for you. You will need to have this done after you have received the laptop, however, and you will need to have the RAM you would like installed with you as well.

Asked by Joe.
- A:Answer Under heavy use a few hours! I haven't quite timed it but I would say I'm close! Thats with brightness set a little below half and performance all the way up. I'm sure if you turn on saver modes you'll get more!
