More than just adequate.
||Posted .I am a wildlife artist and I just needed something to catalog my Photos for further references to paint. This has adequate space, more than needed plus a great, crispy clear screen to display my pics in detail. I am also pleased it still has a CD drive included. Lastly, the price was very reasonable. I am definitely getting my money's worth with this one !

This HP laptop is excellent for my business
||Posted .This is the 2nd HP 17.3 inch Pavilion that I have purchased in the last 7 months for my business. Because the 1st one was reliable, I purchased another one so that I can be on the internet with one and type the data that I need into the other laptop. I use these laptops in my own business for legal forensics and utilize a wireless hotspot in my mobile office which is a RV. Using a HDMI cable from 1 HP laptop to a 29 inch TV allows for the images to be much larger for my viewing and data entry into the 2nd HP laptop. The TV can be put into portrait mode and the TV bracket swiveled to the portrait position since most legal documents are on legal size documents so the diversity of these 2 HP Pavilions is excellent for viewing and typing while away from the home office. The battery life appears to be sufficient although I rarely am not plugged into either 110volt or while on the road, utilize a generator or inverter to power my laptops and TV.

Excellent Well-Rounded Laptop
Posted .I just got this computer yesterday to replace my HP DV6 computer that I purchased several years ago. I accidentally dropped it on the edge of where the battery plugs in. Although it attempted to charge the battery after this accident for about a month, the battery stopped charging. Not knowing if I just need to replace the battery or if battery hardware is damaged, I decided to go ahead and get another computer for just in case. Most of the computers that I've purchased have been Compaq (defunct) or HP. All of my Compac and HP computers have been consistently reliable and outperformed many other comparable computers for years. I have in the past purchased other brands, such as Acer and Dell, which began to fall miserably after a few months. This past January I decided to take a gamble on a small 11.6 Dell touch screen computer. After a month, the computer began to fail for no apparent reason, and I would have to restore the computer back to factory settings. I took the computer to Geek Squad three times with no success. They couldn't the cause of the error. Out of frustration, I decided to sell the computer. Learning from this experience, I decided that if I ever needed another laptop again, I would go back to only purchasing HP products. So why did I pick this computer out of the other HP models? 1. I'm a PhD student and English Instructor. I read a lot of material on my computer. Having an 11.6 portable laptop made me aware that less is not always best, especially if one is having to read material often on his or her computer. In short, trying to read or type anything on that little Dell gave me the worst headaches of my life. With this HP computer, that isn't a problem. I don't even need my glasses to read material. 2. A computer that has a touchscreen is not all that awesome. When I had the Dell with the touchscreen, I would often have to wipe the screen several times a day to get rid of the smudges. And even wiping it wasn't enough for the most part. Ultimately, because of the constant smudging, I began to avoid touching the Dell computer completely. While I see the usefulness of a touchscreen for a phone or tablet, I'm not quite certain if a touchscreen is all that necessary for a computer. I can take or leave it to be honest. 3. This computer is actually lighter than the HP Envy with a 15.6 touchscreen. I tested it out in the store. The reason? With a `17. 3 laptop, the weight has more room to be displaced. Besides, I don't mind a heavy laptop. They used weight like a brick 10 years ago, so this one doesn't seem to be heavy at all to me. 4. The components: I'm an AMD processing type of gal. Always have and always will be. The RAM can be expanded, which I find to be a plus. The feel of the keyboard is great. And I like the roughness of the mouse pad. I like the amount of inputs and outputs. And I think the memory will be sufficient for my needs. 5. The computer is affordable. I'm not a big proponent of spending over 600 dollars on any laptop computer. Unless it can do your laundry, it's not really worth purchasing a 1000 dollar laptop that is going to be obsolete in a year. The only downside to this computer is that it has Windows 8.1 on it. I'm not a big fan of Windows 8.1. To me, it is clunky, but Windows, especially after Windows XP, has always been clunky and clumsy.

Awesome bargain
||Posted .Awesome find for HP lovers especially, but great for anyone who needs a laptop and doesn't want to spend a whole lot of money for quality. Lovely large screen, decent built in speakers, and bright display. I upgraded my memory to 8gb and geek squad installed it quickly and my new laptop was ready for me the next day! The battery could last a bit longer, but it charges up fairly quickly. I would definitely buy it again.

Awesome laptop for the price!
||Posted .The hardest part for me was getting used to winders 8. It has been fun! This laptop is great for surfing my 40+Mbps wired cable connection but the wireless works just as well at 10+Mbps on my old wireless router, but that only shows up on speed-check, not the screen. I use it for surfing, email and TV/videos/movies as well as music. The speakers are OK but I recommend headphones. An inexpensive wireless mouse is a good idea too. I may even expand memory to 8 gig in the future. Video is great too. I just hope this one lasts longer than 3 years like my last HP that overheated and died.

Perfect laptop for above average uses
||Posted .I was looking for the best laptop between $300 and $450 that would run moderate games such as World of Warcraft, and games that are pretty much equal or older. I mostly use this laptop for school, and it works perfectly. The CPU and graphics processor exceeded my expectations for a $400 17'' laptop. The chassis feels a tad on the cheap plastic side, but they had to cut costs somewhere and I'm glad it wasn't on the internal components. This laptop is perfect for those needing a 17'' screen for videos or games, and the keyboard is a good size, and includes a numeric keypad which helps me tremendously. The main thing I don't like about the laptop is the DVD drive. It is noisy, feels very flimsy when it is open, and it seems to load slower than any other DVD drive I've ever owned. Easily replaceable, but some people would like to know this kind of info. I use a wireless trackball mouse primarily, and the built-in mouse pad is ok. It gets the job done, but I don't like them. Best performing laptop I could find brand new for under $400, plus I upgraded to a max of 8 gigs of ram for about $75 and now I don't have to worry about anything else for a very long time.

Nice Machine
Posted .I bought this box because my older HP is diseased (G62)... I did my research and this Pavilion 17 made the grade. I stuck with HP because I trust their product. Though I will miss my lock button. My old box was a refurb so it's heart just wasn't into what I was giving it I guess.. I work my machines hard. This box has the quad core with turbo, which I really put to the test. My old box had only a dual core. Which worked well for me up until it:'s death. I am a mufti-tasker at best. Multiple windows and apps/programs going all the time. I love movies and other video so the Radeon GPU is awesome with it's extra on-board ram compared to my old box. I bumped up the system memory (ram) to it's max of 8gb, which is plenty, so I have everything I need to run my box at it's fullest. The sound isn't the greatest, wish it had Beats... my old box didn't either. Though it does have the Beats looking EQ. I will get that EQ set just right some day. I play a lot of music and movies. Besides I use external speakers. I have no problem with the new Windows 8.1, I know there is a classic shell or start menu 8 app that will give me back the old classic look of win 7, but I yet to install it. I don't use the win 8 start menu much, I have mine set to stay on the desktop. I have also installed many programs they say will not work with win 8. I don't understand their reasons why. They work fine for me. I did no mods to make them work either. I like this new box and I expect it to last for the next 6 years plus. :)

Perfect TV media center PC
Posted .I bought this PC as a dedicated media center to watch and/or record Over the Air TV through Windows Media cneter and occasionally watch shows from broadcast network websites. It needed to have reliable, smooth graphics at HD resolution and to handle recording shows simultaneously from four separate TV channels. It does all of this flawlessly. The big high resolution screen should make a very satisfactory desktop replacement. I don't use it that way. The PC sits on a shelf with the screen closed, while connected to four TV tuners. It is on 24 hours/day. The only glitch I have seen was tha the HDMI output became unstable after being on for nearly three weeks. I rebooted the PC and it cleared immediately and has been running flawlessly for a week now. The PC is so large that I would not consider it a very portable laptop. But for ease of use and easy on the eye and tourch typing, it is excellent.

Q: Questionhow hard is it to add RAMSpecs say it has 4GB DDR3L SDRAM For multitasking power, expandable to 8GB. Never done this before is it difficult?
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer No, it is not difficult. Take the battery out, then loosen one screw, slide the panel out toward the front of the laptop and you can access the memory right there. One memory card is in there already, then there's a free slot. Took me longer to figure out how to get that panel off than it did to insert the memory. I did this before i ever powered on the computer the first time--windows had no trouble recognizing the added memory.

Q: QuestionDo I need a separate wireless device for this laptop?Just trying to figure out if it has built in Wifi.
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer Yes wifi is built in. You do not need to buy anything else. Hard to imagine any laptop not having built in Wifi these days. It has 2.4 GHz wireless N (which is pretty typical). Some laptops offer dual band (2.4 and 5 GHz) options. The 2.4 GHz gives you better range, at lower speeds. HOWEVER. These lower speeds probably still dwarf your actual internet connection speeds (they dwarf mine) so for internet related stuff it will always be plenty fast. The only time you might miss the 5Ghz band is if you were, say, copying files from one machine to another over your local wireless network. But for regular internet use, it won't make a lick of difference.

Q: QuestionUbuntuIs it possible to partition harddrive for ubuntu installation. Will this void the warranty?
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer Very easy to partition the hard drive with this OS Windows 8.1, I am sure it would void the warranty, but HP is good at standing by their stuff, do not think you will have a problem.

Q: Questionwindows xp supported?ms will not know about the hardware just the software side so i need to know if it will run xp. anybody tried installing xp on this laptop? will it work?
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer XP will NOT work on this machine. Nor Any laptop or pre-built PC manufactured after win 8 has been released. It just will not run an older OS. You can install it, but the drivers aren't there. The internal components like the BIOS with not recognize the drivers from older OS peripherals. Each on-board component has it's own bios chip, this is why it will not run anything older than windows 8. I have already tried it. So unless you are building a brand new tower type box, then you can put what ever OS you want on it, there just is any way to get it working just right on a new pre-built retail tower or laptop machine. That is the story.
