Great value, has some issuesPosted .I would recommend this to a friend
This is the first HP I have purchased in years. I had heard they had gotten their quality control act together, so i gave this a try. So far, I am very, very pleased! The laptop is beautiful. It is very different from the rank and file black/blue/gray crowd of laptops. The screen is fantastic, bright and clear. The resolution is low compared to some, but high enough to be very effective. The keyboard is roomy, and has a great feel. One issue, the keys are indeed hard to read in anything other than perfect lighting. I have this same problem with silver on silver keys of my Mac Powerbook. Vista 64 has issues with many programs hardware - I cannot get my Samsung Laser printer to work with it! I am using the Windows7 Beta, and the laptop is much, much faster! Convenience factor: With a 17 inch screen, this is a desktop replacement laptop, not a portable netbook. Therefore the placement of the USBVGA and other ports along the sides, toward the FRONT of the unit is illogical, and plain hard to work with. In order to insert a DVD, I have to adjust the USB cables for my printer and external drive, because the ports are in front of the drive. The ports on the other side mean my mouse cable is in the way as well. On a desktop replacement laptop, the ports belong on the back of the laptop! If they must be on the side, they should at least be to the rear so as to be out of the way! Just take a careful look at the pictures and plan your desk accordingly. Overall, a terrific machine for the price.

Outstanding Product, Excellent ValuePosted .I would recommend this to a friend
After purchasing this laptop, I passed down my Toshiba laptop (4yrs old, still runs like a dream) to my husband. I also currently own a Lenovo Thinkpad tablet for my small business, and previously owned a Dell laptop with my corporate job. I have not been overly impressed with Lenovo's products, particularly the slow performance. Likewise with Dell. After having my Toshiba Satellite (15" brightview screen) for four years and having no problems with it, I was afraid I'd be disapointed with my next product. This HP laptop, however, blows my mind so far. My husband and I are computer geeks, and he used to be a computer consultant. After "consulting" with him an a helpful Best Buy associate, we decided on this laptop for several reasons - as listed in my "what's great about it" section above. I'm primarily using this laptop for PC gaming (not online, but from CDs), and internet browsing. While at Best Buy, I checked reviews on this laptop, and found similar complaints across the board, that the processor is too slow, and that the keyboard is difficult to read. I agree with the latter, that HP could have used white to print the letters, however my counterpoint would be that if you are an extremely experienced-typer, this shouldn't concern you too much, nor deter you from buying this model. The layout also takes some getting used to, as the keys are shifted to the left to accommodate for the wonderful, and very smart numeric keypad. I'll trade the old keyboard design any day for this convenient numeric keypad! As for the "slow processor", I wouldn't agree entirely. From my understanding, the AMD Athlon processor consistently outperforms the Intel processors, and boast cheaper manufacturing - therefore you can get a laptop like this, with a ton of ram (4GB is great for gaming), at a fraction of the cost that an Intel processor laptop would be. Also from my research, the AMD processors start to "slow down" when multiple apps are running concurrently. Any processor will do this, including Intel. Intel handles multiple apps better, but if you aren't concerned about running a bunch of apps at the same time (like me, I just run one game at a time, or the Firefox browser), you will find that the AMD processor is faster at single-tasking, which suits me well. You can easily look at the model at Best Buy and see that aesthetically, this is a beautiful machine. A huge, crisp monitor, with a sleek design overall. The keyboard is virtually silent, and the laptop comes with media remote control, and touchscreen media center (above the keyboard). As for the weight, it's a bit of a beast at 7.5lbs, but not too overwhelming. I typically sit with it directly on my lap for about 3 or 4 hrs, and it's perfectly comfortable, and doesn't get very hot. I would highly recommend this laptop to anyone I know. At $700, it's a steal for the features it offers, compared to similar builds on other laptops.

First laptop ever purchased, I love it!Posted .I would recommend this to a friend
I recently bought this laptop after doing about a weeks worth of research on it and a few different brands and models. I picked this one because I have another hp computer already and it seemed like the best package for the price. The screen is huge which I love and the keyboard is so easy to type with. It comes with Windows Vista which I am getting used to and it comes with many games which keep me entertained. This computer will be used for mostly entertainment including music, photos, games, and internet browsing, that is why it has lots of space!!! Also for school, typing reports and researching. It also comes with an ATI RADEON graphics card which I have been told is really great. The downside: Because the screen is so huge, it is kind of heavy to be carried around. Mostly mine is staying on a desk. The keyboard does not light up at night so unless you are an experienced typer or have a light around, you might have trouble. Since it is chrome and bronze and not the standard black, you are pretty much going to have fingerprints on all the chrome. Which is not so bad because you can easily clean them. Overall I am fully satisfied with my purchase and would recommend this laptop. Hope you found this review helpful and I would suggest to do research on whatever you plan to invest your money on.

Great LaptopPosted .I would recommend this to a friend
I have been an IBM (ooops, it now Lenovo) Thinkpad user for over 10 years. This is my first time venturing outside of IBM but I must say that I am not disappointed. I went to Best Buy last Sunday to purchase a starter laptop for my 12 year old son and got him a compaq but as I was leaving the store, this humongous 17" HP laptop caught my eye. Looking very closer, I immediately fell in love with it and vowed to get it, even if it was not on that same day. I think the overall design and chrome color was what attracted me to it at first. But as I read the specs (4 GB of RAM, 320 GB HD, and Dual-core CPU, for under 1K!), I just could help imaging owning one. As my luck would have it, the store was sold out but I was promised that it would be available mid week. Well, I decided to stop by Best Buy today and pick up one and so far so good. All my tests have been successful. I am very contented with what I have seen over the past several hours. The only thing that didn't impress me was the lettering on the keyboard. Unless you know where the keys are, you will have to squint (especially, at night) to find the right key. Also, there is no locking mechanism for the screen or cover when the laptop is closed...I wonder if this wouldn't create a problem after extended use. But overall, I am a satisfied and a proud HP owner. Watch out IBM/Lenovo!!!!

Awesome Laptop ComputerPosted .I would recommend this to a friend
This is is wonderful HP Laptop, speed iss really great, price is amazing, the 17" display is really big. Only draw back is the high contrast on the screen, the gold and chrome keys make it extremely difficult to be used in low lit or bright areas, because the keys are gold and shiny. Sometimes the keys tend not to be pressed, I had double checked this and just realized that some letters were missing. Surprisinly this gold and chrome computer does not hold finger prints as expected, only in the mouse pad aread. The battery life is great even on standby. Runs pretty cool and quite. I am using this is my graphic system, running Photoshop, flash, Illustrator and other image editing softwares. This has enough power for a long time. The sound is amazing, crystal clear and high def, also this laptop has a HDMI output, rocks in high def when its connected to my tv. I have owned this laptop to 4 weeks now, no problem, there is a program tat is already installed to creat your own recovery disk, I used 3 DVD's, had a few glitches but it continued from where I left off each time.

5th one's a charm!!Posted .I would recommend this to a friend
This is my 5th computer like this. I had to return 4 others either because of "defects" or software issues. The first one I had, had a black dot in the middle of the screen. The second i had to factory restore because all of the software was not installed properly (stated by hp customer support). The third had issues with dings, dents and defective problems. The fourth my disc drive got stuck and would not release my dvd. After an hour of pushing the open button it finally released it. Now this is my 5th one of these and overall it is a great computer. I did have some issues with the webcam giving me an error but customer support gave me the link to update the drivers. There is no problem now. This is a great computer dont get me wrong. But just to warn you, you might have to exchange a couple before you get a good one! Also the charger gets so hot you cannot even touch it. They send a 65 watt adapter with the computer. This is not enough wattage for this computer. I had customer support send me a 90 watt. The one thing i would say is that HP customer support is AWESOME! They overnighted the adapter to me. Buy this computer you will not be sorry. It is lightning fast!

I'm completely satisfied so farPosted .I would recommend this to a friend
So far I am completely satisfied w/this laptop. It was the best "bang for the buck" I could find. I was initially looking @ a 15" laptop for around the same price, but then I went to BestBuy and saw that I could get this 17" instead. I read a bunch of reviews online, and some ppl complained that maybe the processor isn't the fastest (2.1Ghz Turion X2), but it's been plenty fast for me so far. I don't do a lot of cutting-edge gaming on my PC anymore (that's what the 360 is for) so it does what I need it to do very well. Plays NWN2 just fine (gotta turn off/down shadows, but I haven't found a PC yet that I didn't have to w/that game). Other ppl complained about stoopid things like "the touchpad shows fingerprints" and things like that. But that doesn't really bother me... I mean, c'mon, it's a TOUCHpad. I love the LED buttons in the bezel, very nice clean shiny look to the whole thing. I've not been a big fan of HP in the past, so I was a little leary about getting this laptop from them... but so far so good. Maybe this one will change my mind :D Hopefully it will stand up to the test of time and I will continue to be completely satisfied. My wife says the keys are a little too close together and she makes typos because of it, which I understand as I do sometimes too. I think I just need to get used to typing on a laptop again though. Oh the only downside is the 5400 rpm drive, I would prefer 7200+... but 5400 seems pretty standard on most laptops anyway. The drive seems plenty fast most of the time anyway. The only reason I only gave it 4 stars on performance is because I know that it's not "top of the line" performance wise. But I didn't feel like paying a lot more so bang for buck it seems adequate for my needs. Overall it's pretty much just what I was looking for.

This laptop is Sweet! I traded the 599 17" I bought for this one. The Toshiba was fine, just flipped out on the extended video. (and the battery life on it stunk) This laptop not only improved on both of those situations, but it's a pleasure to use. Everything the Toshiba did "choppy" this one does smoothly. You could tell the Toshiba was always struggling with videos and animations - this baby doesn't miss a beat. Again, no major complaints about the toshiba - but for the extra hundred bucks or so, this gives more difference than it costs. The battery - some say too short - i think it's fine. I got a solid 2.5 hours out of it. For a system with a 17" screen, that's not bad. If you want longer battery life. live with a smaller screen. I have one that runs 4 hours on full-perf profile. But the screen is smaller - I happily trade a couple of hours of battery life for the screen size for my particular needs. If Battery life were a big issue, I'd use the small one when I'm out... but it's not. The Toshiba only gave me about 30 minutes to Maybe an hour - that's just TOO short - I had no time to really get much of a work-groove going. With this one, I can lose myself in my work and get more done on the 2.5 hours of battery I get. AND, it doesn't flip out in the extended video mode. Solid laptop - no issues - Great price - Lot's for the money... sure there are "better" laptops out there - more video muscle, more processor (cores), more memory (but not much) - for like twice the price. unless you're doing 3d animated rendering, I think this one will work just dandy for you. I do graphics work (Photoshop) and web stuff (DreamWeaver) - and both work without so much as a sniffle. so for the value vs. price, I find this laptop hard to beat!
