A: Well the term is loosely defined... However I just got off the phone with a service tech at HP and bestbuy is a certified distributer of this product (meaning hp is doing the factory refurbishing). HPs definition of a refurb is any laptop that has been returned due to reasons ranging from customer satisfaction, hardware malfunction, to display/ test models, or even older models. These laptops then get repaired, restored, or converted to new condition. Basically if you open a brand new laptop compared to a refurb you shouldn't be able to tell the difference. The difference is; Not every part is replaced on a reburbished product, only the parts that were damaged and in some cases (when perfectly good laptops are returned) nothing has been replaced. But all have gone through testing to ensure that they are in working and like new condition. So some of the components have some mileage on then. It's very similar to buying a used care Vs a new car. But a used car comes with a warranty wile this laptop does not! This is why you can't add geek squad warranty. bottom line, you are buying a laptop that has used hardware. It's been tested and functions fine. The real reason for the reduced price is the lack of warranty. Electronics randomly fail by nature of manufacturing and (I believe) electronics that have recieved additional service have a higher likelihood to randomly fail. So place your chips because without a warranty you are gambling. With that little speal... I bought this laptop hoping that my bet pays off. I'll leave a review when it arrives.
