    Synopsis

    Il Sorpasso
Regarded by many as Dino Risi's finest film, The Easy Life (Il Sorpasso) casts Vittorio Gassman as Bruno, a jaded, aging roue, who introduces young Roberto Mariani Jean-Louis Trintignant to his hedonistic lifestyle.. Previously a man with a purpose in life, Roberto soon becomes as wanton and wastrelly as Bruno. The older man is proud of his handiwork--until tragedy strikes. Risi sagaciously sets his moral fable against the beauties of the Riviera; we may not approve of Bruno's lifestyle, but we certainly understand why it appeals to him. Among the screenwriters of The Easy Life was Ettora Scola, a frequent Dino Risi and Vittorio de Sica collaborator and an excellent director in his own right. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Criterion took a great deal of care in its release of one of the lesser known classics of Italian cinema. While lacking the popularity or stacked filmography of giants such as Fellini or Antonioni, director Dino Risi crafted a fully entertaining and memorable film that remains a must-see for any fan of world cinema. The story of a chance meeting between Bruno, a free-spirited, free-wheeling 40-something, and Roberto, a responsible and laid back college student, is one of the first true "road movies," which has influenced numerous films around the world since its 1962 release. "Il Sorpasso" moves from location to location at a brisk pace, but also lets the viewer get to know both characters on a number of levels, and the stark differences in personality yet burgeoning friendship between the two makes for a fascinating dual character study. The new 2K transfer by Criterion is simply outstanding, featuring gorgeous detail and great contrast. Risi's superb cinematography of the Italian countryside makes for some unforgettable images, and Criterion certainly does them justice. The extras featured on the disc are well worth a look as well, featuring (but not limited to) a funny and interesting interview with Risi and an hour-long documentary on the director. I would highly recommend adding Criterion's 2014 release of "Il Sorpasso" to your collection if you enjoy 60s Italian cinema, or just quality character-driven road movies in general.
