    Synopsis

    Independence Day: Resurgence
Roland Emmerich returns to the helm for this long-awaited sequel to the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day. Fearful of another attack, the nations of Earth have teamed up against their common enemy -- the extraterrestrials who brought humanity to the brink of extinction. Using recovered alien technology to bolster their defenses, the alliance braces itself for another invasion. Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman reprise their roles from the original film, while Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, and Maika Monroe are among the new additions to the cast. ~ Daniel Gelb, Rovi

    Independence Day
A group of intrepid humans attempts to save the Earth from vicious extraterrestrials in this extremely popular science-fiction adventure. Borrowing liberally from War of the Worlds, Aliens, and every sci-fi invasion film inbetween, director Roland Emmerich and producer and co-writer Dean Devlin present a visually slick, fast-paced adventure filled with expensive special effects and large-scale action sequences. The story begins with the approach of a series of massive spaceships, which many on Earth greet with open arms, looking forward to the first contact with alien life. Unfortunately, these extraterrestrials have not come in peace, and they unleash powerful weapons that destroy most of the world's major cities. Thrown into chaos, the survivors struggle to band together and put up a last-ditch resistance in order to save the human race. As this is a Hollywood film, this effort is led by a group of scrappy Americans, including a computer genius who had foreseen the alien's evil intent (Jeff Goldblum), a hot-shot jet pilot (Will Smith), and the President of the United States (Bill Pullman). While some critics objected to the film's lack of originality and lapses in logic, the combination of grand visual spectacle and crowd-pleasing storytelling proved irresistible to audiences, resulting in an international smash hit. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

So I bought the 2-movie pack because I thought it was a better deal between buying the movies separately. If you read the back of the box, it says it has all the same featurettes as buying the separate movie sets. I figured great, save some money. Unfortunately when I got home and opened it, I instead found out that some of the listed featurettes were on a second disc..which each movie does not have. The box listing is literally a copy of each original box's content listing, down to the "2-disc" per movie. There is only one Blu-ray Disc per movie and therefore only half the featurettes listed on physical disc. The only reason I gave it 4 stars with this information is because the Digital Copy through VUDU gave me access to not only both movies but also full access to all featurettes in digital format. As for the movies themselves, one is a 90s classic which I remember seeing in theatres when it originally came out. If you watch it nowadays, the CG and special effects are obvious and bad when compared to what's put out - particularly its sequel. But for back then it was amazing, with a good story (albeit slightly implausible physics). The sequel does justice to the original, set 20 years later and with an equally good story. If you like sci-fi, this should be something you see at least once.

Technically it was a good followup to the previous movie of Independence Day, but there were some things that just didn't add up. There were a few things that were a little strange in the acting as if there was a section of the movie missing. However, if you can ignore some of the parts concerning this, you can enjoy the movie. What I did like was that there was no real deus ex machina involved and the victory was a hard fought one. Brent Spiner reprising his role was also a joy. As a whole, the acting was well done, but seemed to be missing the concept that millions had died, but it was OK in the end. I got the feeling that the view was supposed to already have that same feeling carried over from 20 years (movie time) to the current time. The tech stuff was really neat, but I really wanted to see how life had changed in the 20 years gone by with all the changes in tech and the world re-populating itself. Yes, there was some shots of large, upgraded cities, but not of the average Joe like there was in the first movie. This hampered being able to relate to the person 20 years in the high-tech future.

I think that the "Independence Day: 2-Film Collection" are the greatest action/disaster films of all-time and are also my favorite action/disaster films of all-time. I have seen and enjoyed both of these films several times and "Independence Day: Resurgence" was a creative and original sequel to "Independence Day". I also think that both of these films had a lot of entertaining, enjoyable and exciting action, mystery, suspense, horror and drama and really great and amazing casts and personal storylines as well.

Having seen what happens when a sequel to a blockbuster is released way longer than 3 yrs after the original, I didn't have high expectations for this, but OH. MY. GOD. It not only took the whole ID thing to the next level, it blew it out of the water completely! And the special features are very entertaining. NOTE: Check out "It's Early, Alberquerque", you'll never look at morning local talk shows in the same way...

If you like the movies it's a good deal. Blu-ray and digital copy of each movie. I give four stars because the packaging is incorrect on the back. It speaks of a disc 2 with special features for the original Independence Day but there is NO SECOND DISC in the package. There is only one blu ray disc for each movie. However, all the special features can be viewed digitally via Vudu. Have not yet watched blu-ray to comment on picture quality.

Even though this set includes both movies, if you come across a copy with the dust sleeve (slide out cover) it will say that it includes 2-disc version of ID4 20th Anniversary & 1-disc of Resurgence, that means the set should have 3-discs. But if you remove the cover it says that it only has disc 1 of ID4. So unless you don't care about the 2nd disc of ID4 20th Anniversary Edition then this is a nice set to have.

The original moving stands the test of time and is an entertaining, good movie in itself. "Resurrection" on the other hand will not. It has a weak and obvious plot line, and at times is just stupid. For example the father surviving a tsunami on a leisure boat. Ok it has big bang cgi effects etc which rock the sub woofer but the film is no where as good as the original which gets the five stars.

I mean, who doesn't love Independence Day? I had been looking to upgrade to the Blu Ray version of the first film because seeing monuments spectacularly explode just screams to be done in High Definition, but when Best Buy had both movies for such a low price, I jumped at the chance to score this double feature. Definitely not disappointed.
