Synopsis

Independence Day
A group of intrepid humans attempts to save the Earth from vicious extraterrestrials in this extremely popular science-fiction adventure. Borrowing liberally from War of the Worlds, Aliens, and every sci-fi invasion film inbetween, director Roland Emmerich and producer and co-writer Dean Devlin present a visually slick, fast-paced adventure filled with expensive special effects and large-scale action sequences. The story begins with the approach of a series of massive spaceships, which many on Earth greet with open arms, looking forward to the first contact with alien life. Unfortunately, these extraterrestrials have not come in peace, and they unleash powerful weapons that destroy most of the world's major cities. Thrown into chaos, the survivors struggle to band together and put up a last-ditch resistance in order to save the human race. As this is a Hollywood film, this effort is led by a group of scrappy Americans, including a computer genius who had foreseen the alien's evil intent (Jeff Goldblum), a hot-shot jet pilot (Will Smith), and the President of the United States (Bill Pullman). While some critics objected to the film's lack of originality and lapses in logic, the combination of grand visual spectacle and crowd-pleasing storytelling proved irresistible to audiences, resulting in an international smash hit. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

In 1996, this film made over $817 million to become the 2nd highest grossing film of all-time at the time. It made Will Smith a A-lister and a bankable summer blockbuster star. The premise is pretty simple, aliens attack earth and earthlings fight back with all their might to survive. It is not a deep, thought-provoking film; but a fun blockbuster that a whole family or varied group can watch and enjoy without thinking to hard. It is not overly violent either. It had great visual effects, which helped the film earn an Academy Award for best visual effects. Even in 2015, the visual effects stand the test of time, like the Jurassic Park visual effects have stood the test of time. Price: I paid $4.99, but in 2015 I think the most I would spend on this film is $7.99-$9.99. I got it for a great price point and it is worth it to by this if you see it on sale for cheap. If this set came loaded with special features or in a limited packaging I could justify paying more. Packaging: The version I bought is just the standard blu-ray version. There are not a ton of special features, but there is more than just a trailer. The cool thing was the version I bought came with a special edition slipcover (cardboard cover) that is part of the Fox Icon slipcover wave. Overall, happy with the purchase and happy with my experience buying from Best Buy. Note: I would really give this film and packaging a 4.5 if possible. I reserve 5s for absolute masterpieces with great packaging that have an abundance of special features, like the Lord of the Rings extended edition set.

Ok, the cons, no big deal, but in the movie the government knows about aliens, but somehow the US government is the only one that does, and even then the information isn't shared until after devastation has occurred. The head of the CIA knew, but the president didn't, yet his cabinet knew, makes little sense, but hardly affects the movie in a negative light, and i don't really consider that a negative of the film. As for the pros, great movie, fun aciton, amazing special effects for the time period. Something that is subtle, in one scene you see Israeli and Palestinian aircraft on the same runway in a joint effort. As well, the president declares Independence Day relevant to the world. The spirit of patriotism and hope is clearly present by the end, and makes for an awesome hero action archetype film. If you don't have this movie, you don't have a dvd collection. Oh, i did find one thing i objected to, the one random stripper scene by Vivica A. Fox, considering the family tone, and the language throughout the movie, this scene was out of place and thrown in just for shock factor. It didn't mesh well or belong, and the stripper role could have easily been any other situation or job instead with an even better effect on the film. The scene seemed as though it was thrown in later for the sake of having a woman dancing around.

Movies about aliens invading the Earth and taking over, launching attacks are nothing new, but 1996's Independence Day was the first time this was attempted on a big budget with big-name stars and state-of-the-art special effects. The results hold up two decades later. The cast includes Will Smith as a fighter pilot, Randy Quaid as an eccentric crop duster who claims to have been abducted by aliens, Bill Pullman as the US President, and Jeff Goldblum as a scientist who may have the solution needed to win the war against these alien visitors. This is the second release of the film on Blu-ray; having been remastered in 4K, this transfer easily surpasses the earlier release (which looked good in its own right). Sound is equally impressive, and the inclusion of new and archival bonus material alike sweetens the deal. Independence Day isn't the deepest movie ever made, but when it comes to an exciting, fun popcorn movie, there is no finer film!

The film is a bit dated - the presentation is not.

If you were around in summer 1996, you know what a big deal ID4 was when it came out - a pop culture phenomenon if there ever was one during the summer's of the 1990's. However, the film IS admittedly a bit dated now, particularly in the humor department, but it's still a fun ride. Anyone with an older release wondering if it's worth it, well YES it is. The 4K remaster looks miles above the old in both regular blu and UHD. Of Note: I've hear some people complain about the compression artifacts on the UHD disc, but your mileage may vary dependent on your system. That audio on the regular blu sounds as good as ever, but the UHD wins this round BIG TIME with a DTS X multidimensional remix. If you're a home theater buff, like me, already equipped for this, you're in for a treat. Truly immersive and absolutely destroys what was already a great 5.1 mix on the older releases. The attacks, explosions, and general ambience of sets and interiors come to life in a whole new way. Worth it for the upgrade on that alone!

Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind. “Mankind.” That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can’t be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it’s fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom… Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution… but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on! We’re going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!

I'm a total sucker for extended editions of movies. Some are far better than others but typically they're more enjoyable as it's the vision of the movie the director wanted. "Independence Day" is not a movie that left a lot to the imagination or questions unanswered but as a man who grew up watching this movie learning there's an edition with more packed into it automatically piqued my interest. For years the only way to watch this was, of course, DVD. A DVD that looked OK but definitely not the best way to honor a movie that took over America for an entire summer along with ushering in a new generation of special effects. Thankfully this Blu-ray has been released and looks totally stunning. And while the movie is dorky and hasn't exactly aged awesome it's still a great movie to enjoy over and over again. Downside is the digital copy, much like others, is only the theatrical version but that is a very small criticism.

Independence Day still holds up as one of the best guilty pleasures out there. A Summer popcorn muncher that defines the term, the movie is packed with the perfect balance of action, humor, good characters, great visual effects, and memorable moments, essentially everything that makes a "blockbuster" a "blockbuster." It'll be interesting to see if the sequel can match the original's charm, excitement, and lasting appeal, a tall order to be sure but one that team of Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich are capable of filling. As for this new Blu-ray, it's terrific. A strong improvement over an already good transfer is alone worth the price of admission. A few more new extras would have been nice, but the legacy supplements are terrific. The absence of a new audio track is the only real drawback to this release. Still, it comes very highly recommended.

TERRIBLE MOVIE THEN AND NOW EVEN ON BLU RAY

There are better movies to put on blu ray first then this joke of a movie. I think a few of the folks were involved in Godzilla, 10000 BC, Day After, and another stinkers of a movies. Independence Day made good ticket sales when it first came out due to overhype and cutting edge special effects at the time. The story is bad and Will Smith over acts as usual. Harry Connick Jr is TERRIBLE. I loved how the alien ship they hi jacked had the ergonomic chair and chair for a humans when the aliens had no rear ends and were squids with alien heads. I also loved the fact that it took 2 wks or less to learn to be an f-18 fighter pilot. I also loved the comical ending how the F-18 took a Tron 90 degree turn into the alien mothership. This movie is the worst of Hollywood in every way. Movie studios execs should be beaten up for throwing money at the same people producing terrible movies and charging overpriced tickets. Maybe there was no sequel to this because they fooled the public once already.
