  • Inside Inside Llewyn Davis: discover how the acclaimed film was made with the filmmakers, cast, crew and musicians

Synopsis

Inside Llewyn Davis
Idealistic young folk singer Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) struggles to make a name for himself in the Greenwich Village folk scene of the early 1960s in this fictional period drama from Joel and Ethan Coen. As the harsh winds of winter blow through the streets of New York City, the homeless singer/songwriter drifts from couch to couch in search of his big break. Feeling that he's finally burned his bridge with longtime friends and fellow folk singers Jim (Justin Timberlake) and Jean (Carey Mulligan), and convinced that his recent work on a novelty song will lead him nowhere, Llewyn hitches a ride to Chicago with the mysterious Roland Turner (John Goodman) and his taciturn valet Johnny Five (Garrett Hedlund) on a mission to audition for famed impresario Bud Grossman (F. Murray Abraham). Meanwhile, Llewyn discovers that he himself may be the biggest obstacle on his arduous road to success. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This movie was not as popular as some of the other Coen Brothers' movies, but it is a great melancholic tone piece in my opinion. The acting is top notch, the music feels very of-the-time, and the plot, though it may meander a bit, shows a few days in the life of a down and out folk singer in New York around the 60's. It depicts the struggles that most artists are faced with at some point in their careers... should I stick to what I love to do or should I sell out to make an honest living? Anyone who has had dreams of pursuing a career in the arts should be able to relate.

Frankly it's criminal that Captain Phillips, Philomena and American Hustle all received best picture nods at the Oscars while the Cohen Bros. latest effort, Inside Llewyn Davis was snubbed. It's a heartbreaking and beautiful time capsule that takes audiences back to 1960's Greenwich village New York where a young man navigates the perils of trying to break into the music business. The performances are excellent and the soundtrack is top notch. This is truly a gem that has flown under most people's radar do to limited press and no love from various award ceremonies.

my only complaint with this movie, as with most cohen brothers movies, is it left me with wanting so much more. but the stories of very personal journeys as I have seen in many of their other movies (o brother where art thou, raising arizona, no country for old men) continues with this gem. some of the folk music is not entirely my thing, but I can appreciate what it meant to the musical landscape. strong and vibrant characters throughout, oscar isaac plays a convincing lead and you wish you could just advise him to make different choices sometimes.

If you like most of the Coen brothers work, you should like this film as well. Taking place during the early 60s, Greenwich Village (right before Bob Dylan hits it big), we follow Llewyn Davis, a folk singer whose had better days. The film's charm, like most Coen films, is the idiosyncratic characters that populate the film as well as the journey, both physical and spiritual that Llewyn Davis goes on. Great soundtrack, great performances. There is only one bonus feature but it is a good one, running about 43, covering all aspects of the production.

I love movies that give the audience a glimpse of what life looks like for different people in different time periods. The movie follows Llewyn as he struggles to deal with the harshness of making it in the folk music seen of the early 60s. There are no twists, I could give you zero spoilers. All we see is a man struggling to survive and the reality that eventually our lives become a record of themselves, doomed to repeat when we refuse to change. DVD plays and that's about all I need to ask.

This Coen Brothers flick left me cold on first viewing. As an early 60s slice-of-Village-life film it was interesting to watch but not enjoy plot wise. I'd like to watch it with no dialogue--just the music. Actors were perfectly cast and Oscar was amazing, but I just felt the script was a bit empty and the whole package ended with a thud. I'm going to watch it again in a week or two and see if my mind is changed.

I bought this without having seen the movie before because I thought odds were good I would really like it, and although I did like it, I didn't love it like I was hoping I would. But then again, I have a feeling it will grow on me and I will come to appreciate it more next time around when I know there won't be much of a story to develop and I can just appreciate the meandering quality of Llewyn Davis.

another subtle and well acted movie from the Coen brothers. Llewyn Davis is pretty much everything you'd expect from recent Coen brothers movies these days, nothing more, nothing less. Don't expect another Big Lebowski or No Country. Expect a more subtle and delicate film. Overall a good movie, but not great. Little DVD extras but even the DVD comes with UV digital copy.
