Pure Genius! Steven Wilson does it againFebruary 25, 2009
Steven Wilson has released yet another album of pure musical genius. If you are expecting another Porcupine Tree album, think again. This is a collection of songs that Steven didn't feel fit in with any of his other projects, so he released his first solo record. The music is deep, dark, introspective, beautiful and occasionally brutal. The opener is a mild rocker and the closest thing to a single. From there the album quickly moves into unique territory. Random white noise creates tension, along with the whaling tones of Steven's Ebow. The London Session orchestra graces track 3 with a gorgeous string arrangement. Soft melancholy piano, dark guitar riffs and brilliant drumming are the mainstays of the recording. The spectacular piano playing of Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater) can be heard on several tracks. From shoegazer, to jazz, to industrial noise, this record encompasses so many genre's that it's difficult to classify. The package is a two disc set. Disc one is the standard album on CD. Disc Two is the album mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound in both DVD-A and DTS formats, and a 24Bit/48kHz stereo mix. The artwork contains a full booklet with phenomenal photography by Lasse Hoile. Insurgentes is a phenomenal record, but not for the faint of heart. Don't expect a radio single. Plan to listen many times before you truly grasp the beauty and genius of this record. Enjoy!
