How To Train Your Roomba
|Posted .Finally, finally, finally. It’s a Roomba that actually checks to see what is in front of it before it runs it over. I think every Roomba I’ve owned while caring for two cats have succumbed to the inevitable random hairball attacks in the wee hours of the night. This has traumatized me enough to stop running the automated schedule feature; I always have to do a sanity check before I run any Roomba nowadays. The j7+ hopefully solves this problem. Having owned the i7+ for a few years now, it was easy to get to know the j7+. The “i” and “s” series of Roombas are smart enough to map your entire home’s floor plan so that you can decide what areas of home need cleaning, and the newest “j” series are no exception. Once your map has been created, you can take advantage of automated cleaning via schedules and the amount of passes for a particular room (maybe a high traffic area needs more than one pass). They all remain methodical in their cleaning paths, minimizing clean times and maximizing both square footage cleaned and battery life. That’s all there is to it. But let me tell you what the “j” offers that it’s siblings do not. The j Series offers something called PrecisionVision Navigation, but I like to call it Obstacle Avoidance. Using cameras and some sleek software engineering, the j7 can identify obstacles and ask you if you think it should avoid the obstacle or area. With the magical powers of the internet and image databases, the j7 has tons of examples to reference when determining if something is out of place. Only two things come to mind: cords and pet waste. Now, all this decision making happens from the iRobot app, so owning a Roomba like this is catered toward the tech-savvy. It has to be used in conjunction with the iRobot app (setting up WiFi, adding a Roomba product, etc). After each run, the app will give you statistics on it’s last run (sq cleaned, clean time, etc) as well as pictures of potential obstacles in its way during that run. You then have the ability to tell your own Roomba if it's (1) a temporary obstacle like a sock that never made it to the washing machine , (2) a permanent obstacle like a cluster of wires underneath a desk, or (3) not an obstacle at all. If you deem the observation either a temporary or permanent obstacle, you have the option of sharing your photo with Roomba to build their image database further to help other j7 and future models identify trouble. For me, that trouble is cat hairballs. Choosing permanent will mark the area on the map as a Do-Not-Clean area. So essentially, Roomba is saying that I should not be afraid to start using the scheduling feature once again. They are so confident in their product that they are giving me the Pet Owner’s Official Promise (POOP). If my j7 decides to run over the nasty hairballs that may manifest itself in the middle of the night, Roomba will replace it for free. The promise is only valid to the original owner for up to one year from the purchase date. And so I now run the j7 every night, waiting for the hairballs to manifest themselves. So far, no hairballs, and no stinky j7. Summer is ending, and the hairballs are waning. Still waiting. Let’s talk about the quirks with this machine. Allowing the j7 to learn your home’s floor plan can be a bit difficult, especially if you have small children or if you live a not-so-organized lifestyle. The j7 needs to run a few passes through your home to establish a map. These passes can be either a normal cleaning or a mapping run (no cleaning involved). If there is a slight change in the environment (like a chair is misplaced or toys are scattered), the j7 will think it’s a new floor plan and create a second map. Add another misplaced chair or clutter, and it might make a third! You’re going to have to be diligent for the first few runs, ensuring that it can establish a baseline for your home. This is key to getting all the other features of this unit to come alive. I was about ready to give up on this unit, but I realized that I may have made it difficult for the j7 to learn the floor plan. Another quirk that I’m kind of on the fence with is its flashlight. It now has a flashlight to illuminate its path and aid in picture taking. The thing is, at 1AM-2AM in the morning, it’s lighting up everything in a dark room. I don’t have blinds or window treatment on some windows, and it’s putting my goods on full display during the late hours of the night! One honorable mention is the very loud self-emptying bin. Up in our 2nd floor, we don’t hear it as loud when we’re asleep, but imagine it going off if you live in a studio or smaller apartment. Another honorable mention is the scratches and scrapes the Roomba inflicts on itself. After one run, it will look like it is 6 months old. Last quirk that still bothers me today is the “Vacuuming cancelled”, or Error 17. This does happen from time to time, and unfortunately the app doesn’t tell you exactly why Error 17 happened. What you will find is at least 9 different reasons why it may be happening and leaving it up to you to decide which one may be triggering it to happen. Yeah, no thanks. Lastly, for those considering any Roomba vacuum cleaner, please remember that these units need general maintenance too. This includes removing hair and dust that might collect in the front wheel as well as the spin rollers. There is a small high-efficiency particulate filter that needs to be replaced every few months to keep the Roomba running at 100% suction. Eventually the spin rollers will become dull and worn and you’ll have to replace those too. These accessories will also add to the total cost of ownership down the line.

Awesome robot!!
|Posted .This review is for the iRobot Roomba j7+ Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum (7550). Let me begin by saying this is my third iRobot product. I have experienced their customer service on a couple of occasions and I will tell you there is none better. The main reason for my purchase is the fact that I have 2 German Shepards and the dog hair gets out of control quite quickly. With that said, let's move forward with the review. The initial unboxing experience, was clean and simple. I will attach some photos to demonstrate. iRobot has simplified the entire process to a point that I actually overthought it. Basically, all you do is follow the 3 steps on the front of the "Getting Started" card, then turn the card over and follow 3 more steps on the back of the card. iRobot thought this out very carefully. They minimized the packaging and the steps you need to take. Its eco friendly and human friendly, you gotta like that! The j7+ is a powerful cleaning machine, much more so than my previous models, and it has the one main feature that I have wanted from the beginning. It returns to its charging base and empties itself out. This is the real beauty of the new iRobot models. My home needs to be vacuumed at least 2 -3 times per week. Now the iRobot Roomba j7+ runs every day for me! And it does it without me lifting a finger. Now for the good stuff - iRobot knocked it out of the park with their new app for the j7+. I know some reviewers had difficulty with it in the past. However, a lot bugs seem to have been fixed in this version. The only flaw I encountered was when trying to push buttons on the app to quickly. It may need a few seconds to respond. There are settings for almost anything you can think of, from mapping rooms, to specific cleaning areas and keep out zones, you will have a little fun just exploring all that this app has to offer. The all new j7+ now has cameras that help it to navigate around your home and will take pictures of areas with obstacles for you to review within the app. The pictures the j7+ takes help it to learn the environment quicker and teaches the robot as time goes along. The pictures will not be shared with iRobot or anyone else unless you want them shared. That's a good security feature in my opinion. I know some folks have tried old roombas before. And they have complaints such as the robot moves around in patterns that are not efficient. The j7+ doesn't do that strange circular pattern stuff, it moves about in a geometric pattern that anyone can recognize as a good cleaning pattern. You will even notice this when it finds a very dirty area and covers it more than one time. The other complaints could be the noise the old robots made. The j7+ is considerably quieter, especially on carpet surfaces. On hard floors any machine is going to make noise, but the level is bearable to watch tv over. As a final note for the iRobot Roomba j7+ Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum (7550). I would absolutely recommend the j7+ to my friends and family and anyone with a fur-baby. My home is clean when i come home, and my dogs haven't tried to eat it... yet!

little cleaning buddy
|Posted .first I didn’t think i’d ever need one of these robot vacuum, but after I finally had the chance I love this little robot roaming around my house and collecting dust I didn’t think I had. unboxing experience was fairly simple it’s labeled by number to kinda of guide of what to open first, doesn’t have much, you will have the power cord and an extra small filter. not sure if it’s just my packaging but the box came with two manuals but none of the paper came with instructions manual to tell me what’s in side of the device to give me an over view or to teach me of how to install or disassembled the roomba vacuum, no instructions to guide the user to download the app either, but those are some useful things that other people might not be aware of what to do after finally decided that the box really didn’t come with some kind of instructions I just went ahead and downloaded the irobot app to setup the irobot j7+. the setup experience was also an issues, the app wasn’t recognizing the device or it will lose connection, I know it’s not my wifi I have great internet at my home with zero problems on other devices. speaking of the app the experience is great, it’s easy to use from creating setting to set which day you want the roomba to clean to or just to see how roomba is doing as well. I enjoy the app it gives you so much information about the vacuum from battery life to starting the job, the app will also keep you posted if anything wrong with the roomba, but the biggest highlight about irobot app was mapping the environment this could take some time, since the roomba will have to move and scan around the floor of your home, specially by having a bigger home this could take a little while, irobot app also have an option to do mapping run, it’s main purpose is to cover more ground in less time, once it’s done you will be able to even name certain section of your map so you can program the roomba to which section you want the device to clean. amazing stuff right there! seeing the map of my home after cleaning cycle helps me understand which area the roomba been, you also have the ability to create zones on the app once you have the layout of your home, you can pick specific location where you can close so the roomba won’t bother going at all. or how much in the space you want the device to clean. roomba definitely collected a good amount of dirt/ dust than I expected to, just some area that usually put out of reach for me, or sometimes feeling lazy going down to vacuum some lower area, i’m satisfied of what i’m experiencing so far. instructions did say that it’s recommended to have a great amount of lighting when using the device, so if suggest to stick with that, and to help the roomba to read your floor layout a lot faster. at the end of each run the roomba will return to its base station when the battery is low or done cleaning. the j7 have the ability to empty the container to transfer it to base station, this process can get pretty loud when it’s extracting dirt off the roomba itself. issues that you might encounter with the roomba are having too much hair stuck in the bottom, but no worries it’s such an easy way to uninstall and install back the parts when cleaning the device. overall i’m very satisfied with irobot j7+ the issue of not having manual instructions for setup right at the box wasn’t as great. issues of getting disconnected through the app also not a great thing to encounter, but when it works irobot j7+ is an amazing piece of tech to have in your home.

Great Robovac - Very User Friendly
|Posted .The iRobot Roomba j7+ is latest update to Roomba’s self-emptying robot vac’s. The j7+ is controlled via the iRobot companion app. The j7+ looks quite a bit different from the outgoing i7+, but still has that familiar Roomba shape and design. This isn’t my first robovac, but it is my first time with a Roomba, so I was looking forward to seeing the differences between my other vacs and the j7+. Design and Features The j7+ stick to the traditional round shape that Roomba’s have always had. It measures in at 13.5Ø” x 3.4”. The cleaning path (roller head width) is 6.75” while its side brush collects debris along the edge. The top design has moved away from the busyness of the i7+, and has gone to a simple brushed metal center and soft black plastic around it. Neither surfaces appear too prone to showing dust accumulation. On top of the robot is a singular button with an LED around its outer edge. The LED changes color based on the notification. Red ring is for a problem or low battery, white spiral while charging, sweeping red towards the rear for a full bin, and blue light for when its heading home. The button can be used to start or stop the vacuum with a simple press – holding it down for a few seconds cancels the job and sends it home. The front of the vac has the sensor array (object and cliff detectors, camera, and light) which will face the with dock while charging. The charging bay has a QR code that the vac must read, but I’m not sure its actual use. The rear has the removable dustbin with the attached filter. The dustbin hinges off with a button push, it opens further with another button push for easy emptying. The dustbin is washable (but not dishwasher safe). The removeable air filter must be taken off the bin before any rinsing out. The roller brushes aren’t brushes at all, but rather 2 counter rotating rubber cylinders with groove patterns. These resist the normal roller brush buildup of hair and fur. Another advertised feature is the object detection which allows the robot avoid objects in its path – a notable one is pet waste (we’ve all seen the videos where this used to go so very wrong). The manual still suggests picking up and clutter in order to make cleaning easier, but it is nice to know that my kids toys don’t bother it much. The dock of the j7+ is noticeably different from the i7+. The dock still houses the charging station as well as the built-in vacuum to empty the j7+ after it finishes a cleaning run, The dock has become shorter, wider, and a bit more stylish. It uses a textured matte black plastic for the hopper that holds the disposable vacuum bags. The lid is a smooth plastic with a leather tab loop for the handle. The outer dimensions are 12.5 W x 13.25 H x 15.5 D. The power cord can wrap up on the backside so you can feed out however much or little you need. Overall the dock doesn’t add much to the total footprint of the vac. I’m not sure of the reasoning for changing up the dock shape but it likely allows for better stability and to fit under end tables/benches/etc. Controlling your j7+ is done with the iRobot app. Inside are all the features and settings as well as scheduling, and documentation for your robot. Once you have done a cleaning or mapping run the app will show you your floorplan map. It lets you divide up the map into rooms, give them names, etc. You also have the ability to specify keep out zones and extra clean zones. The keep out zones eliminate the need barricading off areas or closing doors for room you don’t want cleaned. The extra clean areas are places where you want the j7+ to do a few extra passes – I noted an area rug that my husky frequents. You can customize cleaning tasks by making favorites. You group rooms or areas together that you may want cleaned and give them a name. This way if you want to rotate the cleaning schedule for rooms you can divvy it up with these favorites. The app also keeps a history of your cleanings – run times, number of extra dirty areas, and square footage covered. Setup The setup process was as easy as they come. The quick setup guide gives you details on how and where to position the dock. The app guides you through putting the vac on the doc, connecting to your Wi-Fi, naming it, and more. It was the simplest setup I have ever gone through on a robovac. The Wi-Fi setup alone was a few minutes faster. I would feel comfortable having my mom set this up on her own. I let the vac charge for several hours (per the manual) before I set it out on its first run. I expected it to just do a mapping run, but that didn’t seem to be an option right from the get go. It did a cleaning run, but only vacuumed a small portion of my main floor before heading back. I had to send it out again for it to run the more of the house, but it still only did part of it. I ended up deleting the map and started again fresh. At this point I saw the option to just do a mapping run, which set it off around my entire main floor. I closed off doors to areas that I didn’t want it to go (pantry and bathroom), and I picked up the floors to keep a clear path. After the mapping run was over I was able to go in and configure the rooms, setup the keep out and extra clean zones, and create cleaning routine favorites. Cleaning Cleaning is pretty easy – select where you want the vac to go and it will do the job. You don’t have the ability to select ECO or turbo modes or anything that varies the suction strength. What the Roomba offers are modes that augment the amount of passes each room might get. Daily Cleaning mode gives each room one pass, Extra Clean does 2 passes, and Room-size Clean varies the number of passes based on the room size. I have mine set to Daily for right now – I think I can bump to extra and still make a single cleaning run with battery to spare. You can select where you want to clean - single room, group of rooms, or the whole house whenever you start a new cleaning job. It’s hard to tell how much the vac is picking up since I don’t have to empty the bin anymore. With my Neato I usually have to empty the bin mid run or else it fills up halfway though. However, it looks to be grabbing things up pretty well and I don’t see any husky fur drifts after it passes through. The j7+ did a nice job of getting under my guest bed and going through the chair legs in my kitchen. Its slightly smaller size (compared to my other robovacs) made it a bit more maneuverable. There were a couple of problem areas that I believe impacted my earliest cleaning runs before I did a map reset. The j7+ seemed to struggle with climbing my carpet runner and area rug, as well as the base of my IKEA Poang chair. My carpet runner and area rug both have carpet pads underneath which makes them slightly taller than a normal runner/rug. The j7+ couldn’t go straight at the edge of the carpet and climb over like my Neato would, but rather it had to angle over it one wheel at a time. It initially bumped into the edge and determined that was a boundary it couldn’t cross. I adjusted the runner to make it a little easier on it, but it still seemed to transition cumbersomely. The same goes with the base of my IKEA chair. Its ¾” thick, and because the j7+ doesn’t seem to find the open side (the base is closed on 3 sides) it considers the area under the chair to be out of reach. It won’t try to traverse the base since the bump sensor clicks against the wood boards. Again my Neato would easily ramp up over the base and climb around it without too much difficulty. Issues and Other Thoughts Some things I always worry about on first runs are my stairs – always paranoid that the vac will pull a Thelma and Louise and go for a tumble. However, that has never happened and still hasn’t. The j7+ handled the top of my steps pretty well, so no worries here. Also the object detection and avoidance seemed to work well. I did a run where I left some clothes on the floor – it avoided the area without any issue. Cleaning out the rollers is something I will have to do every week or so – I have a lot of girls in the house that shed as much as the husky. The cleaning process was very easy to follow. There is a diagram of how to do it in the manual and there are some helpful shapes/markings on the bottom so you can’t mess up reassembly. The only thing the base vacuum doesn’t seem to suction out of the collection bin is small rocks and other small rock-like debris. I did like the integration with my Google Home system. It was pretty easy to tell the vac to start, pause, or go home with voice control. However, what didn’t work was trying to send the vacuum to a specific room with voice control. I would tell it to clean the kitchen, and the vac would start a whole house cleaning run. This happened for every room I tried. If you happen to leave the vac off the dock for too long the battery will die. I did this last night and it sat for 24hrs off the dock, and the battery was flat. I put it back on the charger and it took a few minutes to build up enough charge to allow the vac to reconnect to the internet and start communicating with the app. The reason for this is due to the persistent internet connection and a few other features that are active even when the vac is on standby. Overall, I really liked the Roomba j7+. The setup was a really high point for me and it made a great first impression. The app is well designed and easy to navigate – again I would feel comfortable giving something like this to my mom and letting her set it all up. The cleaning abilities of the j7+ are solid, and it comes loaded with plenty of features. The only downside I could find were its terrain traversing skills. The taller area rugs really threw it for a loop, and its something I have to be conscious of whenever I send it out to clean.

Simply the Best!!!
|Posted .Upgrading from the iRobot i3 (3150) to the iRobot j7 self-emptying (7550). To be direct, I love the i3 and it is an outstanding vacuum for the price point. But the j7 really is a game changer with the onboard camera and self-emptying base station and individual room set up!! First off the basics…Set up could not be easier, unless there was a person that came with it to remove it from the box. I mean you literally just pull it out of the box, plug in the base station, down load the app and set the vacuum on the charging station. Press the button on it to sync with the app and you’re done!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE the simplicity. That is a theme I really love about this vacuum… set it up and forget about it. It simply does a fantastic job vacuuming then cleans itself and charges it-self along the way as needed. Amazing!!! Now, I do want to add that to really squeeze all the tech out of this you do need to get the app and take a few minutes to name rooms and place virtual borders to designate rooms. It took me about 20 minutes to get all that laid out and learn how to move the virtual barriers and name the map of your house and then name all the rooms. But it is so worth the investment of time. I guess you could just skip all that and just vacuum your whole house everytime but that takes a lot of time if you have a mid size house. I have done a full house vacuum a couple of times now. My house is about 2600 sq ft. and the vacuum say’s it’s about 2100 sq ft. That’s sounds about right with the garage and closets and a bathroom I closed off that our dog stays in during the day. It takes it about 8 hours to complete the job with the charging ect. What’s great about that though is I have not had to attend to it ONCE!!!! It does not get stuck, It does not need to be emptied, it just works and works and does a fantastic job at that!!! It is soooo smart…so is the i3 but the j7 has something the i3 can never have that really shines….VISION!!! It literally sees. One of the things that in hind sight was really kind of a pain in the butt with the i3 was that (depending on how big your house is) the vacuum would need to return to the base station to charge. That’s expected but then you also have to keep an eye on it to make sure to empty it. If you forget to empty and its charged it will just sit there and blink. It has spent hours for me to notice…hey …why is it not vacuuming….oh yeah it’s probably full. I didn’t really know looking back but now with the self-emptying feature of the j7, I can’t imagine not having the self-emptying feature. It’s the ying to the yang and having both the vacuuming and emptying really makes this unit a self-reliant and highly capable robot maid!!! I noticed it as it navigates throughout the house….it moves with more confidence , speed and easily navigates quickly through the house. Much better than the i3. It seems like the i3 used mapping like a blind person that uses a walking stick. Effective… It touches everything and learns how to move but the j7 doesn’t have to do that. Now the j7 still is somewhat tactile as it learns the house, but I watched it stop when it came up to a pair of shoes and go around it without banging into them. It also flawlessly navigated a laptop power cord and (ironically) a stick vacuum battery that I had charging on the ground. Truly remarkable. They say it can ID pet poop as well and prevent a poo smearing catastrophe!!! We should not have that problem as we keep out pet in the bathroom when we are at work but it’s nice to know it should not happen…what a nightmare. I really do like the fact that it can spot trouble like shoes, pet toys, table legs, power chords and some laundry in the floor. Very impressive. The i3 would have had to been rescued a few times with those obstacles. I also noticed how much quieter the j7 is from the i3. Not night and day different but the j7’s motor is either quieter or at a lower pitch than the i3 and that is easier on the ears. What is not easier on the ears and startled me just a bit is when that base station sucks out the dust from the actual vacuum…it sounded like a 747 taking off!!! Scared the dog a bit… but it needs to get the dirt, right? But it’s loud…no joke but effective. The app is amazing and after a few full runs through the house you can name the rooms and adjust the room dividers with the app and be specific with your clean up request…vacuum just the guest bedroom ect. You can also select zones and add stay away zones as well. This is a big deal. As I noted earlier it took about 8 hours to clean my whole house from start to finish (that includes charging times). Being able to tell it to clean the bedroom when I leave the house Or even better, I opened a box and it had small, tiny pieces of Styrofoam that was all over the kitchen. I told the Roomba to just vacuum the kitchen and boom…done! Imagine trying to be that specific with any other vacuum that does not have that kind of smarts???? Something to consider. I also like the small footprint of the base station and the unit. Doesn’t take up a ton of space and it looks sleek. This is what great tech looks and acts like. It’s smart, self sufficient and effective!!! Consider hiring a cleaning lady just to vacuum…100 bucks a month for a clean vacuumed house 2 times a month? This vacuum will pay for itself in no time. Vacuum every other day, or when you leave for work or on the weekends? It’s that smart. I love coming back to a dust bunny free wood floors and clean vacuum tracks on all the carpets!!! What an awesome product!!! Highly recommend. Wish I could give it 6 stars.

One of the best Roomba options!
|Posted .This Roomba has been an amazing part of our cleanup routine in our house! Roombas have been controversial topic over the years—whether you are referring to the horror stories of them smearing dog poop everywhere or their less than satisfactory cleanup work, people don’t know what to think about them sometimes. I can tell you that yes, this version of the Roomba is amazing and between its self-emptying capability, peace of mind with its P.O.O.P system to avoid pet waste (Pet Owner Official Promise) and smart mapping, I have grown to love it. The setup of this machine was easy. I got the dock, or “Clean Base” set up and plugged in and placed the Roomba on the charging contact pads to get it started. I really love the design of the clean base with this one. It is not as tall as previous models, and it is somehow more pleasant and refined looking to my tastes. I actually don’t mind if guests see this sitting in my dining room. The Roomba turned out to be more than a quarter charged already from the factory! I downloaded the iRobot app and went through the setup of this Roomba on my Wi-Fi network. The app guided me easily through the process and before I knew it, I was giving my Roomba a name and sending it off on its first cleanup job! I live in a 1300 square foot condo and the first cleanup everywhere job was a long one, over 3-1/2 hours to cover 721 square feet for mapping and vacuuming (according to the app), a mix of carpet, hardwood, and linoleum with a stop for 1 hour and 24 minutes in for it to go charge itself and then get back to work, which it did automatically! We are very clean people and vacuum at least once a week if not twice and I just could not believe how much hair and junk was in the bag of the self-emptying station! The second time I sent the Roomba to look around the house and figure out the map of the place, I found out that in the app I could just send it on a mapping mission, which when a lot quicker. I then was able to use the app to label rooms, create boundaries and no entry points, and I even set my kitchen and entry as “clean zones” so that the Roomba knows to spend extra time there vacuuming. I am now getting a kick out of grinding coffee and sending the Roomba in to the kitchen to clean up the floor after me, sending it to the living room to vacuum the carpet and leave behind perfectly geometric lines and patterns for our guests to ooh and ahh over and tease us about. The Roomba has showed itself to be more than a match for my wife’s several foot long hairs she sheds, dog food kibbles, and everything else in between. I was very impressed watching the Roomba get itself unstuck from a loose bathroom lug it sucked up into it. It attempted different angles of departure until it was able to get loose. The only hang-up with this Roomba, literally, was laces from my shoes getting caught in it. But the machine paused and alerted me on the app it was having trouble with a bumper, and I went and found it in its state. To find it, I was able to use the app to locate the Roomba and I heard its little chime from my inside of my closet! Another aspect worth mentioning is how quiet this machine is. My cat, which is typically fearful and hides from our full sized vacuum, enjoys following this Roomba around! Maybe it is going to turn into the next meme of a cat that rides the Roomba around in a shark costume, haha! Altogether, this thing is awesome. It is a steep price, but wow does it perform. I have had zero problems whatsoever during my couple weeks of owning it now and over a dozen cleaning jobs. I love the uniform, clean lines it leaves on my carpeted floors and the much cleaner floors of my kitchen and dining room now. If you are here looking seriously at buying it, I would say just go for it and get ready to be as impressed as I have been!

iRobot just keeps getting better
|Posted .This is my third robot vac, and it’s the best for several reasons. I also got the companion Braava Jet M6 mopper, and they work together as a team. Most importantly, it cleans thoroughly. It’s a bit louder, especially on hard floors. I think this is due to the rubber fins rather than bristle bushes. This is a minor issue considering how well it cleans and that hair and threads don’t get wound and require tedious cleaning. Additionally, its obstacle avoidance, including charger cords, is top-notch and really works. I don’t have pets that poop inside, but it also claims to avoid that and the ensuing mess we’ve all heard about. Using a camera rather than radar to navigate, it even can send you a picture of new obstacles and ask if they are permanent or temporary. Lastly, it can work in tandem with the Braava Jet mopper by first vacuuming and then telling the mopper to start its cleaning chores. I have the self-emptying docking station, and although not unique to iRobot, I would no longer be without this option. Most robot vacs have small dust bins, so if you have a large area to clean, you have to empty them more than once. Some are smart enough to tell you, others just keep on the cleaning, and the suction and efficiency drops. Regardless, it’s always a bit of a messy project. This little guy returns to base and empties as needed to do its job. Another improvement with the j7 model is that the self-empty base is considerably shorter in height than any other I have seen. It's about as wide as the vac and can be tucked into spaces others won’t fit. Yep, it’s loud during the few seconds it takes, but I’ll gladly deal with that. Setup was a breeze. It connects to your phone quickly with a press of its one big button, and then the app handles everything including a firmware update if needed. Being camera-based for charting your rooms and building its map, it is slower than others this task. Be patient and allow at least three passes before it has a detailed map built that allows all the customization you could need. Name your rooms, set boundaries, and zones, and develop custom patterns and times to clean. This is also when you can coordinate mopping after vacuuming. The M6 mopper is a second, stand-alone unit. It has an internal tank for cleaning solution that’s easily removable from the top without picking up the unit. There are both single-use and washable wet and dry mop pads that easily attach and click into place. The unit knows wet from dry pads and will act accordingly. Both the cleaning solution and pads are proprietary, so plan on spending a bit on supplies. That said, it mops much better than the combo units I’ve had in the past. These are not inexpensive robots, but they are very good and clean very well. The ability to avoid obstacles does away with a lot of the need to clean up manually before you clean-up automatically common to most robot vacs. If you have a medium to large area to clean with carpet, wood, and wet mop areas, this tandem will do it all. If you want to schedule cleaning and not worry if you left your phone charger cord in the wrong place, what the pet did, or are there toys or stuff lying about, you can relax and forget those issues. Robot vacuums are getting better and better, but iRobot is once again leading the pack. Highly recommended.

Vast Improvement Over My 4-year-old Roomba
|Posted .I have a Roomba 960 I purchased 4 years ago that is going strong. I have been looking for a second one so I can cover both floors without having to reposition it upstairs. The Roomba j7+ meets that criteria and a whole lot more. I was surprised there wasn’t a manual that came with the j7, but the setup process was a breeze. I remember with my older Roomba, I had to connect my phone to the 960’s wifi signal for the initial setup, but not with the j7. I just had to walk through the simple setup wizard in the iRobot app and I just needed to enter the password for my wifi network and somehow it was transferred to the j7. Speaking of the app, it is easy to use and is easy to switch between the two Roombas. After the second cleaning of my first floor, the app let me know that it was ready for me to set up my map. The j7 had mapped out my first floor and set up dividers between the rooms. I was able to customize them a little bit to match them to the floor plan and label each room. When I want to start a job, I can choose to clean the whole floor or select a specific room to clean. When you choose a specific room, the j7 obeys the boundaries and just does that single room. Very Cool! In addition to labeling rooms, you can label Keep Out zones or Clean zones. Keep Out zones are for places you don’t want the Roomba to go. I don’t have any at the moment, but I expect I’ll use it when I have a Christmas tree up, so that it doesn’t try to run over the tree skirt. The zones show up on the map and you specify the dimensions in feet, so you can measure the area you want to include or exclude and be pretty accurate about it. A Clean zone is just the opposite, where you want the Roomba to clean a specific area. I set one up for my front door, so I can tell the Roomba to just go clean the front door area. The Roomba itself just has a single button on top, so there isn’t much to do with it. That’s why the first part of this review revolved around the app, because that’s where you interact with the j7. I like the simple clean design on top and I love the green color scheme on the rollers and the Edge-Sweeping brush. I like how the dust bin on the Roomba swings out. The Clean Base tower is sleek as well. I don’t love that it uses a bag for the tower. It would be better if it wasn’t a disposable bag, but a bin, both from a recurring purchase perspective and an environmental perspective. I always found the area beneath the 960 was dirty, but the docking area on the Clean Base has been clean every time. After the first pass through the house, the j7 knows what the house looks like and started to determine the best direction to clean each room. My 960 will go all in one direction based on the orientation of the Roomba when it starts and will sometimes clean part of a room, then go to the next room for a little bit, and back. The j7 seems to want to focus on one room at a time, which seems more efficient. After a job, the iRobot app may notify you that there we some obstacles it encountered and wants you to review to let it know if this was a temporary obstacle or if you want to add it to a Keep Out Zone. The j7 takes a picture of the obstacle. It often found cords, but I have most of my cords in a place where it shouldn’t be an issue so I haven’t told it to add them to a Keep Out Zone. Pros: • Sleek design • Cleans more intelligently than my Roomba 960 • I can clean a single room or area of the house without having to set up a physical or virtual battier • I don’t have to set up a physical or virtual barrier for places I don’t want the j7 to clean • I don’t have to empty the dust bin every time. Cons: • The vacuum on the Clean Base tower is VERY loud, so don’t plan to run your j7 while you sleep. • Bags in the Clean Base tower are less desirable than a reusable bin, like the bin in the j7 itself I haven’t found anything I don’t like about the Roomba j7 itself. The Clean Base tower has the 2 negative qualities I noted, but that doesn’t change how I feel about the whole package of the j7+. I definitely recommend the j7+ to anyone looking for a cleaning robot. If you don’t need the Clean Base tower, you could get just the j7 and all the things I love about the j7.

Q: QuestionIs this version (7550)quiet the room a I have currently is so loud
Asked by Madasf21.
- A:Answer I think it’s a little quieter when running than my i7, but I still wouldn’t necessarily call it quiet. The emptying of the bin still sounds like a jet taking off.

Q: QuestionI have never owned one before and have multiple levels in the home. Can I move it from level to level?
Asked by Mojo.
- A:Answer Hi Mojo, the j7 series can remember up to 10 unique floor plans, so you can carry the robot to a different floor or a different home. As long as the robot has mapped the space, it will recognize its location and clean as directed.

Q: QuestionHow often does the base bag need to be replaced?
Asked by Magellan.
- A:Answer We have 5 dogs and the first bag lasted a week or so as the unit “caught up” to the rate debris finds its way to the floors. (It runs every day) After that we don’t know yet because we’ve only had to change it out the one time so far. It’ll vary depending on the workload.
