I must admit that I went into this movie with very low expectations. I liked the Jack Ryan movies in the past, but couldn't take Chris Pine seriously as Jack Ryan. Furthermore, I very seldom care for Kevin Costner other than in Dances With Wolves. The critics did not like this movie because it was supposedly a James Bond/ Jason Bourne ripoff. Unfortunately they neglected to realize that there are more James Bond and Jason Bourne sequels than you you count on four hands. Using them as a template was a perfectly good idea with new characters and a great story. Yes, it involved the Russians as bad guys, but with a great new twist. [SPOILER ALERT}, this time it involved a terrorist attack that would be used to exploit the drop in the stock market by selling the most affected securities short. Most people do not understand the way this works and so they can't appreciate how feasible it is to do it and how relevant it is to today's financial markets. Both Pine and Costner were very effective in their respective roles and KeIra Knightly was just delightful. Even Kenneth Branaugh was excellent as a Russian bad guy and as Director (which I didn't realize until later). The bu-ray version I bought looks absolutely great and is one of my better looking movies. I don't want to go too overboard with this because you may not like it as much as I did. The plot is complicated (which I really enjoyed) but if you don't get it, you may not like it. The good thing is that you will want to view it over again many times to pick up all of the details.

Part of the problem is that, having seen Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Affleck play Jack Ryan in previous movies (and having read the books), it's difficult for a new actor to put his stamp on the character. Should he (Chris Pine) act like he imagines a young Harrison Ford might play Ryan? Or would that be like playing Han Solo as Jack Ryan? Plus, to make it more relevant to today's audiences, the story has to be transplanted in time to the present day. The story is pretty good, and keeps some of the Ryan back story (Marine, injured in a helicopter crash, makes a pile of money on Wall Street, etc...), and puts a contemporary polish on it. So, overall, worth seeing on its own merits, but also if only to compare to previous Ryan stories.

Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit features Chris Pine as your typical action hero. The movie has shades of Mission Impossible with action, love interest and our hero saving the day. The movie follows the typical and expected script with no real new additions to the action movie genre that we have not seen before. The main take away point is for Chris Pine to prove that is not only Captain Kirk of the Starship Enterprise. If you like Mission Impossible and Die Hard series then you will like this show. Do not bet against a sequel being made since it follows the previously mentioned series Mission Impossible and Die Hard too much.

A solid movie that has a nice balance between story and action. Shadow Recruits origin story is something I really appreciated. I've never read the books and my only information on the character has been through the movies. I enjoyed this much more than "THE SUM OF ALL FEARS". " Shadow Recruit" seems fairly real and you get the feeling that these things could actually happen. And Kiera Knightly who plays Ryan's *spoiler* (future) wife did a nice job as well and its good to see Kevin Costner in some current roles. Overall its a good movie to pop in on a Friday night.

if you do not relate this to the other shows it is a good feature, the story line does not colaborate with the other stories in the set. you have a young Jack Ryan begaining his carrer with the current events of this day. when previous movie had an experanced older Jack with a current event of that day. the movie does stand well by it self, good story line and cast make this an enjoyable evening in. this is good enough to watch several times. i would recoment purchasing this feature, we have already watched this one 4 times, and will again in the future.

I enjoyed the movie. I liked Chris Pine in Star Trek. The movie has a great cast. I liked the Harrison Ford, Jack Ryan movies. It's hard to top them. I think this movie compliments them, it gives us a nice back ground to the character, more, but different from the movie with Ben Affleck. Shadow Recruit will probably not be ranked hirer than Red October, Patriot Games, and Clear and Present Danger but it's still a good movie to me. Kevin Costner is very good, maybe a bit of a show stealer.

I have watched all the previous Tom Clancy movies. I am a big fan of Tom Clancy. I enjoyed this movie, (and I rarelly enjoy movies made in this era) but it just was not as good as the previous Jack Ryan movies made in the past. It's still a great movie and I do recommend watching it if your a fan of the older movies. Just don't expect a Harrison Ford quality performance (he's a tough act to follow).

I may be biased because I'm a fan of the whole Jack Ryan character series of films (Sum of All Fears, Hunt For Red October, Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger), but this is well done too. A good story with character development that holds your interest and keeps moving, good photography, interesting places and of course the good guys win in the end. Definitely worth viewing.
