Synopsis

Jersey Boys
Adapted from the 2006 Tony Winner for Best Musical, this bittersweet saga dramatizes the rise and fall of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons - one of the key pop groups of the early '60s, responsible for such iconic hits as "Sherry," "Walk Like a Man" and "Big Girls Don't Cry." The story opens in New Jersey, where young Francesco Castelluccio (John Lloyd Young) and his buddies face a narrow window of future career options. Their possible paths include show business on one hand and organized crime on the other, embodied by the slightly menacing yet avuncular kingpin, Angelo "Gyp" DeCarlo (Christopher Walken), who runs the neighborhood and keeps an eye on them. The boys begin to nurture dreams of becoming musical stars, goals that seem far out of reach until they invite Francesco to perform with them in their band, then rename him Frankie Valli; his unique falsetto vocals captivate the girls in the audience, which provides a sign of things to come. The young hopefuls sign a contract at the Brill Building and begin doing backup vocals for record producer Bob Crewe (Mike Doyle), but experience frustration when Crewe drags his feet on recording them as a solo act. Later, the performers name themselves The Four Seasons after feeling inspired by an unusual source. They add songwriter-musician Bob Gaudio (Erich Bergen) and the equation is complete; Crewe hears Gaudio's composition "Sherry," decides to double-track Valli's voice, and helps create a national sensation. Later, however, certain difficulties begin to take their toll on the band - including financial problems, inner rivalries and tensions between the bandmates, and Valli's long periods on the road away from his wife and daughters. Clint Eastwood directs, from a screenplay by the co-authors of the original musical, Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

It's Why You Buy Broadway Musicals

Why do you buy Broadway Musicals on DVD? I'd guess that you want to capture the memories of music and performance long after the theater visit (or in lieu of the theater experience). You've already concluded that the actual stage presentation is not as important for you, because this is a translation into a movie presentation, absent the stage. So, is this successful? Many of the stage performers are present, so there is no lip-synching or odd Hollywood star substitutions. The music is all here. The story is fascinating. Eastwood's direction and the production are nicely accomplished if not bright and colorful. For those of us who lived the 50s-70s, this probably reflects our memories rather well. Music is recorded quite well and a quality home TV/theater system will sound up close and live. We liked the movie quite a bit and will reach for it again and again.

Usually movies based on plays come up short. This is the exception to that rule. I have seen the stage play twice and the movie is just as entertaining as the live performances. I purchased the Blu-Ray to get the best sound quality. The music in the live performance really hits you in a theater. The movie will also do that if you have a good sound system connected to your home theater setup. Most main characters performed their roles in stage plays before making the movie. Clint Eastwood deliberately hired that way. It really paid off. Also, Christopher Walken is superb in the mob boss role. If you are a 4 Seasons fan, you will love this movie.

This film is well acted and well directed. The actors are remarkably talented and very believable in this biopic. And although the film is categorized in the "musical" genre, such characterization shouldn't deter non-musical watchers from seeing it. The music merely compliments the story and does not act as a replacement for dialog like other more traditional musicals. Great story, it's humorous, its dramatic and even tragic at times. And you might find yourself singing along to the fantastic music that is so well-known. However, I do wish the Bluray had more special features.

This was a good attempt to take a Broadway show to the screen but like most that have been done in the past I feel it could have been better. To me the film Hello Dolly was bigger and greater on the big screen in spectacle. When you are dealing with a play like Jersey Boys where it is difficult to expand the production because of the plot limited to certain characters and the lack of Broadway luster of lighting and sets moving around. The magic of live theater in my opinion can't be equaled. All in all it is entertaining movie.

I grew up listening to frankie valli and the four seasons music and i can honestly say this is one hot movie of facts and entertainment for the whole family. I was singing along with the old hits and having fun. Felt a little sad for frankie's life story but the extras on the dvd made up for the sadness at the end. A must have movie for you music lovers and to bring back some old memories. My next can't wait dvd purchase is "Get on up" a story about another favorite singer of mine "James Brown" to be released in January 2015.

Another rare movie worth watching. Jersey Boys took me back in time. The movie plot is about Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons trials and tribulations climbing the ladder of fame, based on the Broadway play. Clint Eastwood is a great director. I'll watch this movie more than one time. I enjoyed it, though the songs went through my head well into the next day. The audio is cinema quality with a decent surround system. There is a very sad part of Frankie Valli's life in the movie, but it happened.

Like Ali, Ray, and Walk the Line, this is another story of how an icon in their industry had to pay their dues with personal strife and tribulation. The drama was well played throughout. The music was well performed and like the previous musician movies mentioned, the movie wasn't one music video after the other. Which brings me to this point..while there is music, three are lots of snips of them throughout. Over all the wife loved it, while I just enjoyed it (more than I thought I would).

Jersey Boys is a great Broadway show, but was a little afraid to buy the Blue Ray DVD after reading reviews from the theatrical release. But, I was pleasantly surprised and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. The actors are right on track with their performances of Frankie Valley and the Four Seasons. Brought back a lot of good memories from the 1960's and early 1970's. I would be careful letting the kids watch it as the "f" bomb seems to be used a lot throughout the movie.
