A dark side to the sunny world of superheroes

While low-profile superhero-turned-private detective Jessica Jones (as well as Daredevil, Luke Cage, and the Punisher) inhabit the same universe as the big screen superheroes made popular in the Avengers, Captain America, Iron Man, Dr. Strange et al films, the gulf that separates the lives of the famous heroes from those of Jessica's neighborhood (a bleaker, seedier underbelly) is comparable to that which separates Doctor Who from its Torchwood spin-off. (I watched this series after seeing the second Guardians of the Galaxy film, and found myself unable to believe that the wonders of that film shared the same universe.) A PTSD afflicted survivor of a trauma which unfolds over the course of the season, Jessica's investigative work is less likely to get the praise and parades associated with the deeds of the Avengers (who saved the world from aliens), and more likely to be the target of scorn by those who hired her, who don't always like what her investigations turn up. A world of overdue rent, angry clients trashing her office, noisy (and nosy) neighbors, etc. is the focus of attention in this neighborhood, where atrocities inflicted indirectly by a super-powered predator engaging in mind control over hapless victims is less likely to be believed than the tangible, larger-than-life acts of big screen villains which the public can see (and more likely to result in public scorn and vilification of the manipulated victims), and the earth-shaking upheavals seen in New York City in The Avengers have made the lives of those living underfoot in this neighborhood about as pleasant as the lives of those affected in real-life war zones, or at Ground Zero on 9/11, with all of the casualties that are implied. This series deserves the praise it has received, to date, and I would strongly urge purchase of this DVD. If you can handle a series where saving the day--albeit often at a depressing cost--may or may not guarantee gratitude, or comes too late for some, this is a drama for you.

The second set of Marvel shows that brings together The Defenders on Netflix! I'll be honest, as much as I had always liked reading Marvel comics and watching the cartoons growing up, I had never heard of Jessica Jones. However, seeing how good the first season of Daredevil was on Netflix, I was optimistic about this one. Truly a great show about a superhero who lost her way due to the most scary villain in a Marvel show or even movie yet, Kilgrave! Don't want to give too much away but it's one of those superhero shows that's just very different than any other out there right now and excited for the second season. If you have Netflix, check it out, if not, blind buy it!

The titular hero of Marvel's JESSICA JONES is a real piece of work: super-strong and tough as nails, but traumatized by her past and tormented by her demons, one in particular: Killgrave, played by the excellent David Tennant (DOCTOR WHO), who almost steals the show. Jessica (Krystin Ritter, BREAKING BAD) must confront her past if she is ever to be free - but can she overcome Killgrave's power?

Jessica Jones is well-executed and a pleasant change of pace from what we've come to expect from Netflix-produced Marvel series. It features a top-notch cast, solid writing and great use of New York locations. It invokes both a classic noir genre and '70s cinema style. Krysten Ritter was born to play Jessica Jones and David Tennant portrayal of Kilgrave was totally convincing.

I gotta say- I love this show. It's the best of the Marvel Netflix shows (and most of the other ones are super good too). David Tennant and Krysten Ritter are excellent, the writing is superb, the directing and the characterizations are amazing, I have only great things to say about this. Why buy it instead of watching it on Netflix? Because it's JUST THAT GOOD!

Jessica Jones is one of the stronger entries to come out of the MCU, and follows Daredevil's superb run with an equally thought provoking and boundary pushing drama. Yes, this is free if you have Netflix but even with the fastest router in the world, the picture and audio on Blu are much clearer and stable than its streaming counterpart.

Before I watched the first season I didn't know much about this character. When I did my research I found out this character deals with some pretty dark subject matter. One of the most darkest Marvel properties yet definitely not for the kiddies. I enjoyed the show none the less I hope Marvel keeps their Netflix show more adult themed.

Just like Daredevil Season 2 I very patiently waited for this to be released in the US, so naturally I picked it up the day it was released. I've already watched both it and Daredevil Season 2, and I couldn't be happier with them (except maybe if they came with some extras of course). I can't wait for season 2!
