Everyone loves Keanu. An entire generation wanted to be Neo after The Matrix and Reloaded came out, or did you avoid every shopping mall in America from 1999 to 2005? So it's a wonder how he stayed low key between 2004 and 2014 with things like Constantine, Scanner Darkly and Street Kings. Well, John Wick ended the hiatus, and Reeves came back in a movie that bumped Reloaded's choreography off the top. John Wick is a simple revenge story, a by the numbers killing spree of a former hit man seeking revenge on a mob family who slighted him during lamentation. The result is a cacophony of point blank gunshots, people getting thrown through windows, thrown through tables, thrown over balconies, thrown while being thrown! And it is awesome. This is the Blu-ray release, and while the golden years of Blu-ray are upon us as the premier definition type, the blacks in this release are like those found in plasma sets. That is to say they are the best darks and blacks I can think of, similar to Riddick (a movie adored for its black levels). The primary track is in Dolby Atmos, but my setup is Dolby True HD 5.1 and handles it just fine. If you have an Atmos setup, prepare to do foundation work on your house. The audio from John Wick could vibrate the fillings out of your skull. Release has DVD, BD, and digital w/ code, and the packaging is two sided 40% reduced plastic. For any action fan who likes movies like Jack Reacher, Drive, or the Transporter, I recommend John Wick. And for my fellow Keanu Reeves mancrushers, the guy just doesn't age! Definitely recommended.

John Wick is a sleeper, cult hit that brings Keanu Reeves back to his heyday. He's been in a few notable movies since his success as Neo in The Matrix Trilogy, however none of them put him decidedly on the same level of that... until John Wick. I loved the dedication that Keanu took to really sell the fight/gun sequences in this film. He makes Wick a believable assassin capable of evoking the punishment that is talked about from his past. Keanu's deadpan acting only adds to John Wick's coolness factor. Another appreciable aspect of the film is that the action sequences aren't filmed primarly with handheld cams, which allows for us to see the action unfold and appreciate the stunt choreography to it's fullest. The UHD presentation for this film is a worthwhile upgrade compared to the blu-ray version. The improvement in resolution is the best aspect of it, but the HDR dynamics follow suit, as well. The dark nature of this film, allows the fine detail increase from the HDR to be on show here. While the colors are also improved, there are more subtle gradations in the film's imagery that, while not drastically different from the blu-ray, is more natural. Fans of the film might want to upgrade to the UHD to watch this in the best possible way. Considering it's relatively cheap UHD price, this release almost makes it a no-brainer.

      Terrific Movie. OLED Owners Beware!!!

I love this movie! I already own it on Bluray but I wanted to test it out in 4K on my Oppo 203 4K player with my 55" LG OLED. Whatever the studio did to add the HDR image processing to the movie destroyed the quality of the image. The black bars on the top and bottom were not pure black as an OLED should be. There was a weird greenish/black hue to it, (granted the movie has that type of filter throughout the movie) but that should not bleed into the black frames of the screen. One of the last scenes in the movie (SPOILER ALERT) where Vigo has Wick tied to a chair was the worst offender. The sunlight coming in through the church bled into the black bars of the movie and I noticed some atrocious dark, vertical bands running across the screen. The vertical bands showed up in other parts of the movie but that church scene was really bad. I compared the same scene, among other scenes of the movie, to the original bluray release and the original bluray release was light years better! The blacks were inky black and there was no vertical banding in the shadows. Let me reiterate: I love this movie! Sadly, when studios go and redo older movies on 4K with HDR they look like garbage, (Ghostbusters and Crouching Tiger comes to mind too). If it was filmed with 4K in mind, it's gold! Save yourself the money and buy the normal bluray version of this movie.

I like most of Keanu Reeves' work as an actor long before the MATRIX films. Given the right script, the right director and decent co-stars, Keanu is capable of great things in film. However, of late, he's made an unfortunate series of action turds, stemming from bad scripts, inept direction and a mish-mash of non-collaborators on screen. I've seen them and been duly disappointed. Then, along comes JOHN WICK... and, yeah, I'm thinkin' Keanu's really back, in his own stride, in the action genre, in a vehicle that is franchise worthy and original (as opposed to something ripped from the comic books, er, graphic novels). There's also a non-Wachowsky MATRIX heritage here behind the cameras, too. No spoiler's from me, though. All I will say is that is that's Keanu *is* John Wick and Wick's gun play and CQB (judo & jiu-jitsu inspired) are both practical and photogenic, worthy of slo-mo replay and review. It's exactly how I'd hope to conduct myself under similar circumstances. Bravo, Keanu! And co-directors Stahelski and (uncredited) Leitch. You will recognize almost all of the co-stars, but, more importantly, they are all throwing in together, as an ensemble, to make JOHN WICK work as a nice piece of action-thriller work. These characters are thought out and thought through for the sake of the story, not merely for the sake of serving up genre archetypes. I will say, that it's always nice to see the double-feed tube Kel-Tec KSG shotgun put to good, unassuming use in the service of "story," too.

With prices coming down pretty dramatically, I'm now a new entry into the 4K market, mainly to upscale my BluRays which I'm very happy with. I bought John Wick because it was 14.99, had good reviews and I hadn't seen it. I mostly wanted to have an action movie for something to compare Blu Ray and 4K to each other. It's actually a great test disc. Tons of blacks, blues and greens I used it to calibrate my Samsung 55 with my new Samsung 4K UHD player and my Samsung Sound bar/sub woofer and all three happily work great together. I had already calibrated my TV to my taste in the various modes and John Wick looked amazing on the Natural setting. The verdict for the 4K products for me is that they are neat but, no reason to replace your Blu Ray unless is it s a very special content to you. This John Wick movie is a stunner when you mute it down slightly so that it is not glaring and the blacks put the 4K UHD through a workout. The movie itself is fun, far better than Taken, though I guess similar in that vein. Really a simple revenge plot shot with gorgeous 4K and some outstanding choreography. I'm sold on Keanu again and look forward to JW2.

Although this film is in the writer's own words a "simple revenge story", it is brilliantly written, acted, and shot. (BTW do you need another reason to watch when the supporting cast includes John Leguizamo, Willem Dafoe, Lance Reddick, and Ian McShane?!). The fight sequences are second to none, and excepting the bad-guy thugs (who are necessary for the high body counts), all the significant characters are three-dimensional and have histories with each other. They speak in a shared code that lends believability and ethics (or should I say humanity) to an otherwise nihilistic and horrific underworld. John Wick is reminiscent of Clint Eastwood's protagonist in "Unforgiven" (1992) and other remarkable anti-heroes who, although they can never truly escape their past deeds, their painful and honest struggle to extract themselves (usually with help of a loved one), and their willingness to fight the evil of their former world provides the possibility of moral redemption. Needless to say, such richness raises these films to something far superior to mere revenge stories.

With John Wick, we get a much needed break from the 'Action-Thriller' that comes to theaters today. No over the top one liners. Did not need every action star over the last 30 years, relevant or not. Just meat n potatoes Revenge. All you need to read are the words on the disc cover. "A wild and bloody ride" Mess with the wrong guy, kill his dog and steal his car, a gift from his dead wife, it's on for the retired hit man. In my opinion, best performance since the Matrix. Great supporting cast, William Dafoe delivers as he always does and Michael Nyqvist owned- that role. Where has this guy been? superlative performance. John Wick is legit. It's just what it is suppose to be. Fun and something actually believable, sorry he does not save the World in this film. The acting and etiquette, the rules of the business are addressed and delivered in a 2 hr revenge-action- thriller. Well done Mr. Reeves. You keep any and all haters at bay in this one, in a 'Neo' -esque way. Point Break, The Matrix and John Wick. Not ranking them in order, just theatrical release order. Very glad I purchased this film after a compelling recommendation.

This movie was OUTSTANDING! Although the very beginning was emotionally draining, it was an awesome movie. So well done...so well choreographed that Keanu Reeves' fighting scenes flowed like artwork. If you saw the promo, you already know that John Wick is/was a real tough guy. (He actually gave up the hard life and settled down.) When his wife died, he was devistated, until a package was delivered. She had ordered him a puppy to ease his pain after she passed on. Shortly after, some bad guys from a Russian mob broke into his place, beat the heck out of him, and killed the dog. Again, all this was in the promo, and in the very beginning of the movie. To say he was upset, would be a severe understantement. Of course, he goes after these guys bent on revenge. It is a very intense and very violent movie, but DARN it was good! My son saw a special, explaining that Keanu learned his moves for "The Matrix". Keanu was in his prime. I definitely plan on buying the movie for my collection. Of course, not for children. Very violent. Take some kleenex for the beginning. If you don't need them, hand them to the person next to you.
