    Synopsis

    Last Tango in Paris
In Bernardo Bertolucci's art-house classic, Marlon Brando delivers one of his characteristically idiosyncratic performances as Paul, a middle-aged American in "emotional exile" who comes to Paris when his estranged wife commits suicide. Chancing to meet young Frenchwoman Jeanne (Maria Schneider), Paul enters into a sadomasochistic, carnal relationship with her, indirectly attacking the hypocrisy all around him through his raw, outrageous sexual behavior. Paul also hopes to purge himself of his own feelings of guilt, brilliantly (and profanely) articulated in a largely ad-libbed monologue at his wife's coffin. If the sexual content in Last Tango is uncomfortably explicit (once seen, the infamous "butter scene" is never forgotten), the combination of Brando's acting, Bertolucci's direction, Vittorio Storaro's cinematography, and Gato Barbieri's music is unbeatable, creating one of the classic European art movies of the 1970s, albeit one that is not for all viewers. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

If you watch this film from the stand point of what the characters themselves are going through and not for its "scandalous scenes" you'll truly appreciate it. I purchased it because I couldn't rent it in my area but that doesn't matter, I would have ended up purchasing it anyway. Marlon Brando gives, in my opinion, one of his best performances. You truly feel his pain and struggles, some of which are based on real life events. Such as, when he is talking to Maria Schneider about his childhood this material is all ad-libbed from Marlon's true life experiences. Maria Schneider also gives an excellent performance. You see her as a woman/child who is struggling to become an adult and find her way in the world but hasn’t quite figured it out yet. I highly recommend this film!

Have this Bernardo Bertolucci classic on VHS, decided to get this Blu-ray uncut, uncensored version. As I was reminiscing the performance of Brando and Schneider, it all came rushing back to memory, how controversial and scandalous this movie was back in the day and still is today .Last Tango in Paris, still shines supreme. Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider top of the line.

Watched this film for the first time recently. A truly great film. I can see why it was controversial when first released & would be considered mild by today's standards. Maria Schneider was great & Marlon Brando was fantastic. One of his best films.

This movie I saw 46 years and I had little memory. I saw again with this blue-ray. This movie has Marlon Brando speaking both French and English. this movie is for adults only, It has female nudity and has foul language every once in awhile.

This movie will most definitely change your opinion on how many uses for butter there are. A classic Brando performance before they all started to get super weird. This is just enough weird. Tail end of the peak Brando era. Give it a try.

A sad film really but still compelling. I saw it in the theater when it came out. This time I got much more of the story (due to being older) and it was a good telling of a realistic story. Plus the price was right, worth it.

A powerful cathartic experience. It's reputation is for all the wrong reasons. A serious film about dealing with death and expressing it sexually, internally, viscerally. Worth your time but it's not easy.

One of the most underrated films of the 70's, way ahead of it's time. Marlon Brando should be praised more for his roles from the newer generation of people, this is all we have left of him. One of the most real felt stories ever put on screen.
