This was an impulse buy of a cheap movie, found in the discount movie bin. The premise of the movie is something like, "What would happen if a brilliant and clever law-abiding citizen feels like the 'justice system' failed him?" The movie starts with a home invasion and disturbing outcome for the mom and young daughter. The dad sees it all, and is deeply disgusted with the decisions of the judicial system for the two bad guys. Don't want to give details, but suffice to say that he has his own remedy for those who he holds responsible. Action is intense at times, and some pretty brutal things happen. Not much is seen, but you know what is going on, and it's grim. Keep your kids (even teens) away from this one, unless you think that the possibility of giving your kids nightmares is a good thing. And, if that's the case, go find a good parenting book to read instead of watching this movie. Additionally, this is not a good date movie, or one to watch with the in-laws, as they might wonder about why you would watch such a movie. If you like intrigue, suspense, and a movie with unpredictable twists, (and can endure some of the grim stuff) it would worth viewing. My family was out, and this was a "by myself" movie that I knew my wife wouldn't enjoy. If watching with others, interesting conversations about various philosophical/legal/moral topics could follow the viewing of this movie. Acting and cinematography is very good.

I bought this movie by mistake. My best friend mentioned it in passing as a movie he recently watched and I thought he was recommending it. I picked it up in a bargain bin in store when I had time to kill. Most of the movie is fantastic if you like thrillers. Even better if you like movies where the villain is also the "good" guy. I could really sympathize with the Gerard Butler character (the villain) mainly because the Jamie Foxx character is so annoying. That being said the ending completely ruins the movie. Utterly ruins it. I do not want to spoil anything further. I am giving this a 3 star overall because the movie up to the ending gets 5 stars and the ending gets 1 star.

Gerard Butler plays a family man who plots revenge on his wife and daughter's murderers and the judicial system who gave one of them a lighter sentence. "It's not what you saw. It's what you can prove in court," explains the DA played by Jaime Foxx. What happens afterward is a series of explosions, traps and bloodshed brought on by a man in solitary confinement. That's the best part of the movie. The script, however, is not as clever. "It's complicated. He's very smart and very angry," explains one character. All the actors commit to the bad dialogue and make for an entertaining thriller.

I really liked this movie. Gerard Butler's acting was great as usual, not that I am new to him (he was equally as great in 300). Jamie Fox as well as the other actors kept the movie fresh and suspensefull ! As for the Director F. Gary Gray, I can't wait for his next project. I only have one complaint, the movie did not need the gore to make it work. It was the only thing that could have been accomplished differently in my opinion. I also liked the Blu Ray extras. A movie definately worth seeing !!

These sorts of movies create the genre of "you can fight City Hall" film, a rather uniquely American style. When the state and its justice system screws over Clyde Shelton (Gerard Burler), he decides to screw them right back, with dangerous results. Whether you find yourself rooting for Shelton, or Jaime Foxx's Nick Rice, you have to thing about WHY you root for them. Despite coming out 8 years ago, this movie feel no less current now.

Movie stars off great. You're hooked and want more, Butler is great. You sit through the whole movie and at the end, you're ripped off. The one person who deserves it the most (jamie fox) somehow gets portrayed as the good guy. I looked forward to this movie comming out to dvd so i could watch it in the comfort of my home, I'm glad I did cause it made me sick. If I could have given this a negative star rating I would've. Don't waste 2 hours of your life on this movie. Booooooooo!!!!!!

Might be the one and only film that you will find yourself, at one point, rooting for the bad guy. The ending was so shocking, and fair so to speak. Law Biding Citizen is a must for your collection, oh, and one more note, what he does does through the entire film, clearly demonstrates how distorted our judicial system has become. Anyone who has lost a family member due to any circumstances such as this film, will catch themselves smiling when "Justice" is issued.....

      Essential

I very much enoyed this movie. The plot was clever, and it had a couple moments that made me jump, and cringe. The acting was good despite a few hiccups. Jamie Foxx could have done better, but he could have done worse. His Academy Award does not lie. Gerard Butler was actually good as a maniacal guy. He just needs to learn to mask his accent better. Besides those things this is a movie worth watching, and adding to your collection.
