    Synopsis

    Lawrence of Arabia
This sweeping, highly literate historical epic covers the Allies' mideastern campaign during World War I as seen through the eyes of the enigmatic T. E. Lawrence (Peter O'Toole, in the role that made him a star). After a prologue showing us Lawrence's ultimate fate, we flash back to Cairo in 1917. A bored general staffer, Lawrence talks his way into a transfer to Arabia. Once in the desert, he befriends Sherif Ali Ben El Kharish (Omar Sharif, making one of the most spectacular entrances in movie history) and draws up plans to aid the Arabs in their rebellion against the Turks. No one is ever able to discern Lawrence's motives in this matter: Prince Feisal (Alec Guinness) dismisses him as yet another "desert-loving Englishman," and his British superiors assume that he's either arrogant or mad. Using a combination of diplomacy and bribery, Lawrence unites the rival Arab factions of Feisal and Auda Abu Tayi (Anthony Quinn). After successfully completing his mission, Lawrence becomes an unwitting pawn of the Allies, as represented by Gen. Allenby (Jack Hawkins) and Dryden (Claude Rains), who decide to keep using Lawrence to secure Arab cooperation against the Imperial Powers. While on a spying mission to Deraa, Lawrence is captured and tortured by a sadistic Turkish Bey (Jose Ferrer). In the heat of the next battle, a wild-eyed Lawrence screams "No prisoners!" and fights more ruthlessly than ever. Screenwriters Robert Bolt and Michael Wilson used T. E. Lawrence's own self-published memoir The Seven Pillars of Wisdom as their principal source, although some of the characters are composites, and many of the "historical" incidents are of unconfirmed origin. Two years in the making (you can see O'Toole's weight fluctuate from scene to scene), the movie, lensed in Spain and Jordan, ended up costing a then-staggering $13 million and won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. The 1962 Royal Premiere in London was virtually the last time that David Lean's director's cut was seen: 20 minutes were edited from the film's general release, and 15 more from the 1971 reissue. This abbreviated version was all that was available for public exhibition until a massive 1989 restoration, at 216 minutes that returned several of Lean's favorite scenes while removing others with which he had never been satisfied. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi ~ Erin Demers, Rovi

      Defective release?

I purchased Lawrence of Arabia on Blu-Ray the day it was released. i am posting this review as a warning that there may be a problem watching it on some BD players. I have a modern home theater system: HP Windows 7 Media Center PC and a factory installed BD drive. Software is up-to-date. All my other BD movies play normally. Lawrence of Arabia does not. When WMC tries to load the movie a pop-up appears asking "Would you like to check for updates?" Whether i select yes or no the movie fails to load and the same pop-up reappears a moment later. There seems to be no way out of the loop. I returned the disc to Best Buy where a manager tried my original disc and a second copy on the store's stand-alone BD player. Neither disc worked. Do not consider buying this release without checking BD forums and online reviews for advice about this problem. If you decide to buy the movie get a manager's assurance that you can return the disc if it does not work.

Amazingly enough, I had never seen Lawrence of Arabia before the blu-ray; one of the very few classics that I missed growing up. It's easy to see why it's a classic though, as it's an incredible experience from beginning to end. The video, showcasing that wonderful footage, is almost perfect only with some very rare, faint blue vertical lines intruding and those are almost certainly a source issue and not a problem with the encode. Equally impressive, the audio is phenomenal with the iconic score soaring through. The only problem here is the obvious dubbing in of lines in one scene for which the original source material was lost. Again, an extremely minor nitpick that has nothing to do with the quality of the disc. There are many behind the scenes featureless to round out the package.

The film is beautiful and this blu-ray edition of it does it the images of the background and characters justice. Packaging wise, it could have been better. This is a standard metalpak, which differs from a steelbook in how the case's spine is put together. Metalpaks have hinces that protrude forward off the case itself instead of a Steelbook having a flat metal spine. This wouldn't be worth mentioning if it weren't for the fact a Steelbook edition of this film exists. It contains the same film, extras and even the same image on the cover and back that the metalpak one here does, but it's just not in the generic case. If you're a fan, you may want to opt for the steelbook edition elsewhere.

A must have addition for any film lovers collection. I personally find this film close to being an example of the perfect epic. with the highest standards in cinematography, acting, script, directing and writing employed. This Movie was crafted with respect for the subject matter and the audience. It serves as a good history lesson explaining partially how the arabic world of today came to be. the closest I can come to any criticism is that the pacing could seem a bit different to persons who are used to the 'fast food' pacing and quick takes found in modern flicks. This film is meant to envelope the audience in its world and be savored by the viewer like a full course meal.

Upon learning of this special edition release, I was stunned when I checked my collection & realized that I did not own this film classic on DVD or Blu-Ray. That sealed the deal for me. I went to Best Buy the very next day, and purchased this steel book. Very nice quality steel book (as are most of the steels from BB), makes a fine addition amongst the rest of my collection. Picture quality is stunning, with a 4K scan restoration, it looks just as good as any modern film released on Blu-Ray. Audio quality is superb, not a missed sound or note. Highly recommend this version to collectors, makes a fine addition to the film buff's collection.

While I already own a copy of this movie, I couldn't pass up the steel book version. Best Buy is second to none with their collectible packaging. The movie is obviously one of the more celebrated of all time, chronicling the military life of T.E. Lawrence and his rise to becoming one of the most influential leaders in history. The cast, lead by Peter O'Toole and Omar Sharif, shine in this film. The cinematography is astonishing and the landscapes are beautiful, even when they're being decimated by war. A perfect film for a rainy afternoon.

This is truly one of the best uses of narural scenery, background music scoring and storytelling that only the combined talents of the modern day film industry could succeed in bringing together as they fictionalize the true events that portray the dramatic life and times and series of events of the real-life historical T.E. Lawrence. It also took this epic-structured sentence to review and do justice to this 'must-have' film in your collection as one of the greatest films ever made! (Applause, thank you!)

One of the greatest motion pictures on Earth comes home on Blu-Ray disc. It's one of the most sweeping adventures of all time committed to film. The story of one man's struggle in the desert as externalized by his own quest to unite the Arab armies against the Turks all amid British influence is a fascinating tale. One feels as though one is in the desert and experiences the hypnotic quality of doing so while one watches the picture. It is a trip like "2001 A Space Odyssey" and is much an experience to undergo the process of watching the film as it is to experience the story.
