    55SJ8500 is an Excellent TV!

    I have owned many TVs over the years from CRT, DLP, Plasma and LCD/LED and this TV is by far the nicest I have had yet. Both the picture and sound quality iare nothing short iof amazing and beyond my expectations given the few negative reviews I have read. The magic remote and WebOs are fantastic and absolutely blow away the horrible Android system in the TV this one replaced. My previous Sony had a nice 4K picture overall but lacked HDR capability and the slow and just terrible Android interface in it made it where I hated to even use it. This TV on the other hand, actually has brought back my old desire to watch TV again. In the last 2 years that I owned the Sony before it, i had pretty much lost all interest in using the unit because of the terrible interface it had. What a shame that Sony is still using it in their current models being sold. So I was immediately impressed when I unboxed tge LG and saw the beautiful floating frame design. Everything went perfectly in mounting it on the wall and settting it up, which was extremely quick compared to other brands I have had. Especially the voice prompt assit during the setup which made me laugh and the lightening fadt OTA channel scan. It was so fast I thought there is no way it could have done it already but it did and actually pulled in about 10 more channels on the same antenna than my Sony did. The tuner is rock solid and every channel works perfectly with zero signal loss compared to my previous TV. The upscaling on 480i is nothing short if amazing and makes old shows appear like they are 720 or better. iit is so good I actually have to keep bringing up the channel info to see if it is really being broadcast in 480. Simply amazing. The sound it has is just the best built in sound quality I have ever heard in any previus TVs and the unit is in a large room and has no problems with crystal clear full range sound. I don't even need a soundbar with this beauty. I have it hooked to a Denon receiver for when I want to play movies in theater quality, but normal use and TV content does not need the reciver at all. Inlove the IPS panel and have always been a fan of the technology for wide viewing and colors and I never understood those who complain of its limitation on contrast ratio vs VA panels. The blacks produced by this model are more than adequate for both myself and my wife eyes and the picture actually to us, looks better than our old Plasma abd for an LCD TV that is amazing. We also do not watch in a dark room so in our envioment it is great. Can,t say enough good things about this TV and for the first time since the 1980's, I bought a new TV that has surpassed my expectations and Thats a great feeling. The only gripe I have so far with this TV is that the owners manual is terrible and badically tells no details into the settings of this wonderful TV. So I have had to spend many hours thus far exploring the menus and settings but so far thisis my only complaint. Absolutely wonderful TV and if you can get it on sale its unbeatable IMO.

    Good TV, but much better options out there

    While shopping for a TV to use for the upcoming Xbox One X (4k and HDR) I narrowed my search down to this TV, the comparable Samsung and the Sony X900e. This TV looked great in the bright lights of the store. It's a entirely different picture when you get it home and into a dark or semi-dark room. The colors on this TV absolutely pop out of the screen. BUT...and it's a big but...the contrast and black levels are really bad. While watching various movies and playing games, they look gray and washed out. And the local dimming feature dims out huge pieces of the screen to try to up the contrast to produce those better blacks and thus toning down the colors. It's especially noticeable playing games as the shadows aren't very deep and black but dark gray. The Samsung MU8000 I looked at had much better contrast but slightly less 'poppier' colors. Even trying to calibrate the TV with two online sites didn't get to look much better. If you sit in a dark room or basement (like me), you might be a bit disappointed at the contrast and picture. I certainly was. I returned it for the Sony x900e and the brightness, colors, and contrast are so much better. It's slightly more expensive but worth it. Even the Samsung I think would be a better option. Not a bad TV by any means, but if you play or watch in a dark room, you might want to look at other options. I'd still recommend this TV, but only if you use it in a fairly bright environment.

    Audio great, video lousy

    I bought this TV on the basis of good overall reviews of LG TV's and a number of good reviews on BB and other websites. First let me say that the audio is the best I've ever heard from a TV, bar none. However, I ignored the reviews that talked about poor black/gray on the screen. What a mistake. I spent hours adjusting the TV using more than one website suggested settings, and even going to a full reset to OEM settings too. NONE gave decent black and gray colors. This TV has no such thing as black, and gray range is terrible too. And the local dimming does not help. For example: with a "black" screen and using the remote's on screen pointer, one can easily see brightening of the "black" below and around the pointer as it moves across the screen. It's like a bright tail below the pointer. Further, in letterbox content, the top and bottom are no where near black and even that changes quite visibly across the screen. I compared this TV side by side to a 6 year old run of the mill Sony, and this TV was visibly worse on black, and the other colors barely as good. When the room gets dark and the auto brightness does it's thing, then it's even worse with the black/gray. I frankly don't know how LG can sell such a display in these times of pretty decent sub $1000 TVs. I returned this TV to BB and they exchanged it for (same price) X900E with no hesitation. BB is great in that regard. Upon setting up the X900E this evening my wife and I each were shocked, shocked, did I say shocked, at the difference. The X900E is light years better in the display. The sound not so good but still better than my 6 year old Sony, and nothing a sound bar won't fix. Once again: great service at BB, lousy picture from LG on this TV (great sound to be fair).

    It's no OLED but good enough...

    After owning this TV for 2 months, I am happy with it because of the quality it can produce for the price. The first thing you would want to do is to Turn Off the "Energy Saving" and the "Eye Comfort Mode" in the settings. These two things will most likely solve what other reviewers are complaining about the TV, that it doesn't have good picture quality and/or contrast/black levels. I have no idea why LG would set these two modes as a default for home users as it degrades the picture quality horribly. Changing the picture mode to "Vivid" will also help increases the color vibrantly. However, I do agreed that the contrast and black levels are not as great as the Samsung MU8000 or the Sony E900 but it is comparable and cheaper. The TV does have some black light bleeding around the corners due to the Local dimming it uses and the blacks are more like blackish-grey but only noticible when watching in a dark room. The best environment for this TV is in a well-lit room with not too much light. If so, this TV is for you!

    I followed the Consumer Reports calibration guide for the TV, although turned off all motion smoothing, and I have to say it's pretty awesome. The picture is vibrant and the only regret I have is I may have gone a little too big for a bedroom (although the wife did say "go big or go home" :) ). The local dimming takes a little while to get used to compared to my older 55" LG 4K that doesn't have it, but I may turn that off down the road. The only ding I will give the TV, and it's not enough to warrant losing a star, is the sound is very hard to get consistent. I have been through every menu and tried lots of combinations of options (turnign stabaliazation or whatever they call it on and off, etc...) and I still have an issue where voices are very quiet but music is very loud. This is a problem as we have this in our bedroom, and I'm usualy trying to watch it when my wife is sleeping. I haven't given up hope I will figure it out, but worse case scenario is I ditch the integrated sound and go with something external (I shouldn't have to though).

    Great overall TV with a poor picture

    Have it for a one day and tested in day/night conditions with different kinds of video sources. The picture is ok in LG demo mode and acceptable (but far from wow) on HDR Amazon and Dolby Vision Netflix shows and in Apple TV4's screensavers. Everything else looks extremely washed out, lacks contrast and backlight. I tried all picture modes and custom settings with a minimum improvement. After that I read reviews and found out this is a common problem with LG IPS panels and Samsung's VA panels are much better in terms of picture wow factor. I wish a BestBuy's rep would not pointed me to LG instead of Samsung. LG's OLEDs is a different story but a different budget too. I'm going to return it and buy Samsung 8000, which is just 100 more and has much better contrast and overall picture accordingly user and professional reviews. It's very unfortunate because otherwise overall it's a great tv and I'd love to keep it - I like design, WebOS, remote is truly magic, no judder in 24p movies, very fast, IPTV live channels are nice and more. The only thing that really bad is a picture and it is unacceptable. Last year I have had a cheaper version of LG TV and the picture was way better although it had a terrible judder (I just tested on the same Amazon's Grand Tour series).

    This TV i had my eye on for a year. After lots of research, i found a better price on Amazon and bestbuy matched it. I was stoked. I was happy. I couldn't wait to get home and show my wife and kids. We opened the box and put everything together. Set it on the entertainment center and plugged it in. Then the horror. A nice thin GREEN LINE running down the middle of the beautiful 55' screen. I could've cried. My wife could've cried. I called LG and they were going to send out a technician. The next day I thought, "Niw my NEW TV becomes REFURBISHED and if you replace an engine, its just a matter of time when something else goes. Make sure to test product before you buy. Has best picture I've ever seen. Best sound on a tv I've ever heard. I'm heartbroken.

    RCA Cable INCORRECTLY COLOR CODED by LG

    I am giving this TV 2-Star because I stumbled about the issue that my CABLE setup box which is ANALOG when wired directly to the TV wouldn't relay Video and Sound. Took 2 months for the Technician to show up because the Customer service people believed the TV is good and I could have defective set up box or RCA Cables. The discovery was that the RCA adaptor that comes with the TV is color coded incorrectly by LG. HUGE MISTAKE by LG which is such a big company. They would have never tested the RCA Adaptor to the TV that they are shipping by making it connect to the TV. Most homes have HDMI cable from the CABLE so most customers wouldn't find the problem. Attached picture is how it should be to make it work. Appreciate the technician who figured it out.
