Liar Liar [WS] [Collector's Edition] [DVD] [1997]

Jim Carrey learns about the truth the hard way in the Universal comedy Liar Liar. Universal has done an excellent job on this title, starting with a very nice 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. The colors and flesh tones boast strong patterns with no fading or bleeding present. Edge enhancement is kept to a minimum with the black levels looking very solid and dark. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and is not quite as impressive as the video portions of the disc. While there are instances of directional effects, they're kept to a bare minimum and used sparingly. Some distortion is heard in the dialogue at higher volumes, though most of the effects and music are clear and concise. Also included on this disc is a French Dolby 2.0 track, as well as English captions. This version of Liar Liar is a collector's edition and includes a few decent extra features, including a mildly funny commentary track by director Tom Shadyac, as well as a short featurette titled "Bridging The Comedy Chasm," featuring interviews with the cast and crew of the film. Finally, there is a short reel of outtakes and deleted scenes, some production notes, a few cast and crew biographies, web links, a still gallery, and theatrical trailers for Liar Liar, Patch Adams, and The Nutty Professor.

Synopsis

Liar Liar
An attorney who tells the truth for 24 hours straight? This has got to be the movies! Fletcher Reede (Jim Carrey) is a lawyer obsessed with his career, and he's devoted his life to bending the truth to his advantage. This habit has broken up his marriage to Audrey (Maura Tierney) and isn't doing much good for his relationship with his young son Max (Justin Cooper). Fletcher repeatedly promised Max that he'll be there for Max's eighth birthday party, but when an important assignment comes up at work, Fletcher calls Audrey and makes an excuse so flimsy that even Max can see through it. When it comes time to blow out the candles on his cake, Max makes a wish: that his Dad could go just one day without telling a lie. Suddenly, Max finds himself physically incapable of saying anything that isn't true -- which, given the divorce settlement case he's just been handed, is going to make his next day in court very interesting indeed. While designed to show off a warmer and more likable side of Jim Carrey's personality, Liar Liar still revels in the broad physical comedy that made Carrey a star in Ace Ventura, Pet Detective -- which makes sense, since both were directed by Tom Shadyac. Both Carrey's fans and foes will get a chuckle out of Swoosie Kurtz's tongue-in-cheek insult to the film's star in the blooper reel that runs under the final credits. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A very difficult film to find. The writing in this comedy is excellent made even better by Jim Carrey's gift of acting. It makes u appreciate his talent even more. He behaves exactly like anyone would if suddenly they couldn't control the things coming from their mouth & moreover why they couldn't control it. It would literally drive you to the brink of insanity. Also makes u realize how much people lie just to avoid hurting others or to get what they need or want. I love Jim Carrey and almost all of his films, but this is at top of my list. First time I saw it, I laughed until I cried. The things he'd say in court at times was so funny. He would say things to coworkers that we'd all think ourselves. A+++++

I loved this movie as a kid, it's got everything you like about PG-13 movies when you're little. Cursing, breasts, kid jokes and laughter a plenty. As I got older I kept coming back to it every once in a while, and it surprisingly held up. Jim Carrey's timing throughout the movie is the real selling point and without him the plot falls flat. Without know anything about this movie, if you're looking for mild family friendly movie. This is an easy pick. I'm sure there are those who would disagree with me based on the sensual content, but honestly it's no worse than what you can see on Public TV today.

This is such a funny movie. Jim Carrie does a great job, and while it is hilarious, it isn't over the top, like some of his other movies. I had not seen this movie in years, and finally watched it again with my daughter, who also enjoyed it. It also has a good message. This movie is about an attorney, who basically lies for a living. It all takes a turn when his 5 year old son wishes that his father for just one day could not lie.

This film is a great, and funny time, in which you can see Jim Carrey be...Jim Carrey!! I feel that this film reflects the best of his comic persona, and if you are a fan of Jim Carrey as an actor, and you enjoy comedies that do not answer a lot of questions (you don't have to take it seriously) then I recommend this one.

This is a classic funny movie! I was hoping they would put it on dvd sometime soon! I think we got it for under $10 or so. You have to be good with Jim Carey (spelling?) and his style, if you know what I mean.

'Jim Carrey' gives one of his most well-balanced performances in this movie. This collector's edition features an array of bonus features that were not available, much to the dismay of fans, on the two previous dvd incarnations. Recommended!

I miss the older Jim Carey films. Though a bit childish and over the top at times. Jim does his best to let it all hang out for us to have some fun with him. Some great jokes and one liners to remember.
