Life may not captivate, but it offers just enough entertainment value to keep the viewer interested. It's as predictable as the day is long and the performances (and the script) are a drag, but the filmmakers have injected the movie with just enough of a technical achievement and sheen to keep it moving, assuming one can get past the overwrought opening act. A classic watch-and-forget, the movie will likely only be remembered when it's seen in a collection of films that tried, but failed, to capture the same magic as Alien. Sony's UHD release of Life actually breathes a little more life into the movie. The uptick in video quality ranges from solid to substantial, and the movie plays better with a firmer, more stable image. The Blu-ray is by no means bad, but it sure doesn't look great in comparison. The upgrade in audio is more of a wash, a lateral move with only a slight upward movement in favor of the Atmos. Supplements are unchanged beyond the moments and still photos. Recommended.

The spaceship operations are absolutely realistic and the 7.1 immersive sound treatment just puts the audience in the middle of all the action which heightens viewer interest to its zenith. The alien “Thing” is smart, very smart, and dangerous. The story-line is spooky and very unpredictable – the audience does not know what to expect next, and the “thing” will do anything to survive. Very dynamic sound track and sound-effects are perfectly fitted to each scene. This film is interesting and it will make you think, really think about absolute brute survival. And there’s a twist ending that will surprise even the best!

      Saturday Afternoon Sci-Fi . . . revived

I grew up watching Saturday afternoon "B", or was that "C", monster or Sci-Fi movies. The formula: a few scientists, an isolated location, a discovery of a seemingly benign creature, and the inevitable accident. What makes this movie different? Well, to be perfectly honest, nothing much. Scientists, space craft, alien creature and an accident. Mayhem ensues. Folks . . . you watch these again and again to see how attractive the scientists are, how menacing the creature, how dumb is the accident, and how big the risk for the rest of us. "LIFE" works at every level, with great image quality and sound. Ahh . . just enjoy and stop thinking about it.

How would movies have drama if characters didn't fall down at a bad time or fail to turn on the lights or otherwise make bad decisions? This film, which has a very good cast and is well-crafted, is chock full of that. What struck me most is how the alien creature always knew exactly what it needed to do to foil the humans' efforts to defeat it. It's as if the creature could read the humans' minds at all critical junctures of the film. We picked this film up as the second in a buy one-get one free offer from Best Buy (probably would not have bought it otherwise). Bluray quality is good as always.

It's quite obvious that this movie was influenced by Alien. You can watch the trailer and guess that much, but this sets itself apart enough from that classic to stand on its own. The tension with the monster's escape is very good, and outside of a few scenes this movie is really good. The end places two expected cliches against each other, and it actually pulls it off well. I'm not going to spoil it here, but they managed to give you what you were thinking in a different manner than usual.

It might not be truly original in its set-up (we've seen aliens in space before - this film is a bit like "Alien" meets "Gravity"), but "Life" manages to pull it off; thrilling and engaging from start to finish. With a beautiful and haunting production (and especially creature) design and some unexpected twists and turns to keep the audience glued to the screen. My only regret is that the UHD version of this film was not available in store; only on-line. That would have made the illusion complete!

The box says I won't see the twist coming at the end. I saw it a mile off. That being said, it's a pretty good thriller monster flick. I mean it's not Alien but it's fun. Some things will make you scratch your head and go "huh, why would they do that" but the acting is good, the picture is great and the sound is spot on. It's just the story is not as imaginative as they'd like to believe. If you can get it on sale, go for it, otherwise, wait for netflix to have it.

If you've seen the trailer, you have to think of the movie "Alien." This movie has several moments which will remind you of that film, and in ways it TRIES to be that type of movie. While it is entertaining, and has some big stars, it doesn't come close to being as original or well made as Alien. I did buy this film, on sale, so do think it's worth of owning for sci-fi fans, but don't expect a fantastic Alien-type movie...
