What is there to say about the yearly madden that hasn't already been said? Every year we see another edition of Madden football that has some tweaks and improvements to the relatively standard formula. I will say that this year's entry is a pretty good one. There is a revamped and much upgraded Franchise mode. This is the mode I play more than any other so this was a good for me. The interface is nicely streamlined, the menus are easy to navigate, and there is a lot of information at the ready that hasn't been there in previous years. I enjoy the ability to assign players to the practice squad, and I also like the quick roster overview, which allows you to reorder your depth chart very quickly. This same view also allows you to go into more depth on each player, such as their stats, contract info, and upgrade XP. There is some cool features now such as Suggested upgrades for your players, staggered contracting that only allows you to start negotiating with certain players at certain points in the season. I also like the ability to choose game plans before each game as well as the 3 players that you would like the training to place your focus on. The game plans that you choose translates into the game by awarding extra XP when you choose those plays. Moving on towards gameplay, I do enjoy the feature that allows you to choose what type of game you'd like to play. You can choose from Offense or Defense Only, the full game, and then you can choose to play key moments. The Key moments format brings you into a simulation version of the game which then allows you to jump in on either side of the ball at pivotal moments that you would expect. (Red zone, 3rd down plays, 4th down plays, and a pretty variation of others that allows you to take direct control when you want to, while not dragging the game out over a period of time that you may not have to play.) Accompanying the gameplay is a new set of commentators. And I will say that this is some of the best and most contextual commenting that I have ever heard in a a Madden game. When playing franchise mode it really helps the immersion when you hear them chatting about your team as well as the other team. You will hear references to past games of the season, winning or losing streaks, and even specifics on certain stats like turnovers and things like that. They have also added the score ticker to the bottom of the screen of all of your games so you can see what is going on in the rest of the week's games. Now for your meat and taters. FOOTBALL! In order to win the game you have to score more points than the other team!! What can I say about the gameplay? it's football. It works, there's some pluses and minuses. It took a while before I started feeling the differences and nuances in the gameplay from last year. But they are there. The game feels a little faster, it also feels harder hitting. The running is a lot of fun this year when you can establish it. The passing makes for some really spectacular plays and catches. A lot of veteran players will be frustrated with some of the same old inconsistencies. But this is where guys like me and them will find their way to the custom gameplay sliders. I tweak these every single year until I find a comfort level of realism and fun. They are worth experimenting with. All in all I'm glad that I bought it on sale. Which is what I typically do every year. I don't feel the yearly upgrade is worth full price unless you absolutely can't wait to have it. I will likely continue buying Madden every year as it is the only iteration of pro football out there for gamers so you can pretty much take it or leave it. Play on!

Very upset with this latest Madden game

Playing Madden games off and on for the past decade, this game is very upsetting. EXTREMELY unrealistic! I have had about 90% of my receivers drop the passes sent to them spot on by the QB. Even if I hit the 'aggresive player key' a,b,y,x on the controller they almost always drop the pass. I play on All-Pro, I can only imagine how disgusting All-Madden (the most difficult) would be. Also, I have not seen so many blocked FG in my life! I play as the Patriots and rarely does Gostkowski get blocked on his field goals. I find this part of the game extremely unrealistic. In real life a blocked field goal just means a defender either hops over the defensive line and blocks or is fast enough to get to the ball from the side before the kicker kicks the ball. What this game does is literally slows the whole simulation down shortly after you click the A button to confirm your kickers kick. After hitting the A key, the ball is snapped, the ball is held waiting for the kicker, and the defensive line is in motion, WHILE THE KICKER IS STILL STANDING THERE IN LALA LAND! He stands there for like 2 seconds allowing a defender to get in the way of the ball! Can someone explain to me where this has happened in any point in history of the NFL?? I can understand if it was a botched snap, or a defender actually got to the ball in time to block it. That happens fairly often in the NFL, but this loonacy?? Unacceptable. Also, when it comes to interceptions, I like how the simulation slows down your receiver and the opposing defender get a huge jolt of speed from mid field to catch the ball for an INT to where you are throwing. Really?? It's literally like the game is setup like a slot machine and no matter what you do, every 10th play or whatever, you will have an INT, blocked FG, or blocked PAT. Lastly, longer field goals are so unrealistic. No matter what, anything that is longer than 50 yds out, 98% you will miss. Particularly between 50-55 yds, most kickers make those kicks, at least 50% of the time I would say. I have had about 4-5 kicks in a row and none would be made. I am hitting the optimal ranges in the kick meter as well. Sorry, another thing, when you are in the 4th quarter and down to the last second and you are attempting a field goal in the 50-60 yrd range, you will almost always make it.... go figure. Ok, last but not least., there has been a defect with the announcers in game for about the past 1.5 months or so, with multiple updates being released... When they start reporting the score they always say seven to nothing *team* when the score is not that. Score could be 14-20 and they say 7 to 0. Unbelievable. I WOULD NOT BUY THIS GAME FOR $60. I BOUGHT IT FOR $30 DURING BLACK FRIDAY, GLAD I DID! Would have returned it if I paid $60. I give this game a 2/10.

This is the best madden yet

My interest in Madden has waned considerably over the years. Gone are the days when I'd stand in line at my neighborhood video game store for the midnight release and play till it was time to go to work, wired on Red Bulls and Mountain Dew. Granted, I still buy it every year, become enamored with the new bells and whistles for a bit, and then quickly lose interest once I realized that the legacy issues that have plagued the franchise still rears its ugly head. Madden 16 addressed one of these issues with the DB/WR interactions and it was a welcomed addition, but it still wasn't enough. This year, I'm happy to say that Madden NFL 17 is leaps and bounds better than any iteration of the franchise EVER. I subscribed to EA Access on Xbox One which allowed me to play the game 5 days early before release. The three biggest pet peeves I had regarding past versions of Madden were thankfully addressed in this game: A.) DB/WR interactions. Yes, they were implemented in last years game, but in Madden 17, they are on steroids. In Madden 16, receivers would be able to fight for the ball by pressing the "aggressive catch" button which would lead to some spectacular looking possessions. However, it almost became an exploit as even average rated receivers were able to pull them off with abandon. In Madden 17, the success of these catches are now tied to player ratings so no longer will you see a Wes Welker sky a jump ball like Randy Moss. Defensive backs are also given tools to counter these type of catches with a "play the receiver" and "swat" the ball buttons. The result are incredibly life-like animations with a sprinkle of strategy and a pinch of risk/reward that make the game very fun.

I've played every Madden game besides '09 since Madden '96. Last years Madden game was the best NFL simulation since '05 and I was really hopping that '16 would build off last years strides. If you haven't purchased a Madden game in a while and you don't care about having the newest rosters built for you than I would highly recommend last years game. I was hopping this year that EA would finally give me more control over my team like having a special teams depth charts. Not only is this feature still missing but EA has given the user less controller over the on field action. In an effort to please big wigs, EA has forced stopped users from being able to nano blitz. You can no longer move a dedicated defense linemen off of the line of scrimmage. I play Madden to have fun, and I found this very frustrating not being able to create custom blitzes based on what the offense shows. If you watch real NFL you see several defenses who move guys around on the defense side of the line. The best thing about this years game is the ability to skip through the ridiculously long and uneventful cut scenes. EA, instead of focusing on cut scenes that nobody watches how about you give controller back to the gamers.

    Best Madden in years

Madden 17 is not vastly different from last year's installment. That is not a bad thing because they've really built a solid foundation over the last few years, and this game is more about refining the experience to elevate the game play and presentation. The all new commentary is a little on the bland side, but the fact that it will be updated weekly throughout the season means it won't get repetitive as quickly, and also leaves potential for improvement. There have been changes to the special moves available to skill players which makes the game more balanced, while new tackle battles provide opportunities for tackles to be made or broken if your reflexes are fast enough. The blocking and running game has taken another step forward this year making the running game more fun and effective. The changes on the defensive side of the game have made it easier to compete against the offense as well. There are less plays that "break the game" on offense so you'll see less repetitive plays being run while trying to defend the AI or someone online. This is a must buy for Madden fans, and the best time for newcomers or players who've left the series alone for a while to jump back in.

    Good game but has issues

This game could have been great but does have issues. There are some good new features with 17 but weren't properly executed. One example is they made it so defenses can intercept passes off tips more often. The problem is there are way to many interceptions like that now. Also I had one of the tips by a corner go 25 yards in the air (literally). Another cool feature they added was you can play before you are completely healed. The problem is you wouldn't want to use them because they are so diminished in skills. I had a running back that came back a week early and he was so slow. Qbs seem a little better but other positions seem very bad. I've noticed a lot more fumbles from qb even when it appears he has his arm going forward and can't be reviewed. All that being said it has great graphics, it's fun to play like the other maddens previously (even with the annoying things I mentioned before ) and does have new announcers (so glad Phil Simms is gone).

Having played both Madden 25 and 16, and being more into the actual game play rather than wanting the latest players and stats, we weren't sure if this one would be worth purchasing. However, after reading the reviews, I decided to get it while it was available at a good price. We are glad that we did! The reviews I had read mentioned the improvement in how the kicking and kick blocking is done, and we have found that to be the case. You actually can block PATs (I've had it done to me twice so far!). The running game also has improved. We went back the other day and tried Madden 25 and couldn't believe how much lower the graphics look now that we've played the latest one. Madden 16 also now pales in comparison. I should add that, though I've rated the game a 5, there is one thing that bothers us -- the commentators talk way too much! Of course, they can be turned down in the settings menu!

I get Madden every year as I am a huge NFL fan and this is really the only game in town. I do like the changes they made to this year's game. The commentary is actually really good, sometimes repetitive especially during Franchise mode playing as the same team week in and week out but honestly this is to be expected from sports video games. I like the effort they put into updating Franchise mode especially as the overall presentation and small changes such as the addition of practice squads helps to up the realism. It would still be nice to see further upgrades such as specific positions like long snapper being added, better looking crowds as seen in the NBA 2K series, and further boosts to scouting and drafting being added but really hard to complain overall. The game itself is still fun to play, especially after tweaking some of the sliders to better mimic the real life game.
