Mask [Director's Cut] [DVD] [1985]

Mask, Peter Bogdanovich's tale of a disfigured boy and his unconventional mother, gets a new soundtrack with this DVD release. Featuring songs by Bruce Springsteen that were not in the original theatrical presentation, the film is presented in widescreen anamorphic that creates an image with an aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, and Dolby Digital Mono. English, Spanish, and French subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a feature-length commentary recorded by the director as well as an interview with him. Even though his directorial skills have eroded over the years, Bogdanovich remains an excellent storyteller and his comments are engaging.

Synopsis

Mask
This is the true story of Rocky Dennis (Eric Stoltz), a personable young man suffering from "lionitis," a fatal disease which causes hideous facial disfigurement. The son of freewheeling biker Rusty Dennis (Cher), Rocky is accepted without question by his mom's boyfriends and cycle buddies, but treated with pity, condescension, and disgust by much of the outside world. The local high school principal tries to get Rocky classified as brain-damaged so he won't have to enroll the boy in his school, but Rusty fights for her son's rights with the ferocity of a mother lioness. Rocky makes friends easily both at school and at summer camp. He also falls in love with Diana (Laura Dern), a blind girl who cannot see his deformed countenance and is entranced by the boy's kindness and compassion. Now that he's got his own life in order, Rocky sets about to wean his chronically depressed mother from her drug habit. Mask is the sort of story that might have ending up wallowing in its own pathos had the acting, direction and scriptwriting (by Anna Hamilton Phelan) been anything less than very good. The film proved a much-needed financial success for director Peter Bogdanovich, though unfortunately it didn't come soon enough to stave off his declaring personal bankruptcy. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is really a good movie and a touching story... me and my special one caught it late one night and it being late we were in a groofy mood and had a surprisingly good time watching it. Terrible as that seems, the reason I began watching it was because I really do like it. But, it's old and a bit cheesy as older movies seems...so it's easy to poke fun at or with if you think positively.

Similar in certain ways to 'The Elephant Man,' 'Mask' presents a touching story full of good performances, especially that of Eric Stoltz. Anamorphic widescreen presentation with bonus director's commentary. Recommended!
