Synopsis

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Director Peter Weir's first turn behind the camera since 1998's critically acclaimed The Truman Show, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is based on two Napoleonic War-era adventure novels in author Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series, Master and Commander and The Far Side of the World. Russell Crowe stars as Captain Jack Aubrey, a high-seas adventurer who maintains a strong bond with ship-surgeon Stephen Maturin (Paul Bettany). After conquering much of Europe already, Napoleon's forces have set their sights on taking Britain, so Aubrey and the crew of his ship, the HMS Surprise, take to the Pacific to intercept any attacking ships from the French fleet. When Aubrey eyes a renegade French super-frigate, the Surprise pursues, leading to an adrenaline-charged chase through the distant reaches of the sea. Edward Woodall, James D'Arcy, and Lee Ingleby also star as members of the Surprise's crew. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

    Decent Movie

I purchased this movie on blu ray after researching to find some the best movies on blu ray to have if you have a home theater. This movie was suggested by several sites as haveing good surrond sound so I decided to purchase it. The movie surrounds a captain who may be a little obsessed with capturing or destroying an enemy ship that is by far a better vessel than his own. I have to say that the movie is a good movie but can go through extended droughts without having action scenes. The video is good but not the best. The audio really surprised me. The movie opens with relatively no action scene, then all of a sudden erupts with sound. The movie becomes alive with sound that is output during action scenes. I would recommend this movie to anyone.

Only a few movies that become classics are iconic due to the lead actors. Russell Crowe and several others become the character. This movie isn't non-stop explosions and war scenes - those parts contrast the authentic sound of creaking boards in the crew's quarters and other subtle quiet moments giving a second layer of authenticity. Cannon booms through my BIG Mordaunt-Short towers and 12" NHT subwoofer impressed me as being the real thing. The DTS sound is very dynamic. A high end Onkyo or Yamaha Aventage A/V receiver gets a good workout.

The first time I saw this movie I thought it was OK, but a little boring. Now, about 10 years later, I decided to give it another chance. This time, I thought it was great! Sure, it has a generally slower pace, but the story is very good and very well told, plus the soundtrack is amazing! Your speaker system will get a good work out whenever action occurs. Even when there's no action, the surround speakers are always in use with a variety of effects to put you in the scene. Overall, it's definitely worth it to check out this movie on Blu-ray, especially considering the low price.

Russel Crowe in "Master and Commander'

The acting and the cinematography are very good, however the PLOT itself leaves a little bit to be desired. There is a coherent story, and some awfully sad scenes, but nothing that a young teenager couldn't handle. I would not suggest this for very young children due to the violence of some of the scenes. Russell Crowe is an outstanding actor, but this story line just doesn't quite bring out his full potential in my estimation. I thoroughly enjoyed the old ships with sails and the action they brought forth on the screen with "manning the sails and high seas". Really great photograhy here.

    Best Movie Ever!

This movie is awesome! It has beautiful sailboats with historic dramatization of real life on those boats. It's a story of duty and friendship; and having to make the tough decisions of life and death. There is no nudity or innapropriate content. The acting is superb and the plot really draws you in. This movie is violent as it is about a Navy vessell which is hunting a French ship during a war. There are battles with blood, guts, (brains) and death. I would recommend this movie to anyone interrested in history, especially naval history.

Great action film that takes place during the Napoleonic Wars. Captain Jack Aubrey leads the crew of the HMS Surprise. Their mission is to destroy or capture the Archeon, a French ship that is great in size and firepower. Captain Aubrey has to think of a plan in capturing the Archeon and he will not give up until his mission is complete, even if it means losing crew members. I loved the battle sequences. Seeing ships and uniforms from an era long ago is great. I would have loved hearing a director's commentary.

This sea epic is certainly worthy of blu-ray presentation. An excellent story, splendid acting, wonderfully shot ship battles and boarding actions, and a great sense of humor in places where appropriate. I really wish more of these films were made. This is one of my absolute favorite films. The blu-ray also comes with a few nice extra features: Deleted scenes, Historical and Geographical Trivia Track, and a Pop-Up Map. For just a few bucks, you could not go wrong with this film/blu-ray.

I am a fan of Russell’s. That is why I bought this when it was first released. The film is very good. SHOULD have won more Oscars & Russell was cheated out of a Best Actor nomination. It was a shame the film did not do better at the box office. Few flaws in the film. I do NOT appreciate “scenes you see” in every movie of a certain time. We had to do sailors getting ill when the seas were rough from a storm. No water, stuff like that. Too bad we had to have 2 DVD versions of the film. This one has a few good extras on it.
