The best Windows device of 2017

Pros +Powerful 8th gen quad core "U" processor +Excellent gaming with 1060 graphics +Excellent keyboard +Excellent touchpad +USB-C port +Premium build quality +Battery life +Excellent display Cons -Expensive -No Thunderbolt 3 port -Does not include Surface Pen Summary Hands down, this is the best Windows laptop/2-in-1 of 2017. The worst thing I can say about it is the price, having to buy a pen separately, and no Thunderbolt 3 port. Everything else about this machine is sublime. Prior to this, a 2017 MacBook Pro 15 was my daily driver. The Surface Book 2 15 has equivalent build quality, a better keyboard, similar touchpad quality, and far better dedicated graphics with the Nvidia 1060 6GB versus the Radeon 560 4GB. As someone who uses both Windows 10 and MacOS regularly, Microsoft has finally done it and created a true Windows alternative to the MacBook Pro 15. While there may be similar options like the Gigabyte Aero 14/15 or Dell XPS 15 that cost less money and are better values, spending the extra money on the Surface Book 2 is well worth it in my opinion. After a few years of primary MacBook use, I am back on the Windows train and could not be happier about it. This review is based on my experiences with the Surface Book 2 15 inch as my daily driver and as someone who travels roughly half the year for professional work (meetings, conferences, etc.). I tend to favor premium devices and this is my favorite device of 2017. Design This is a premium device. The build quality is absolutely on par with a MacBook and is head and shoulders above other Windows devices from other vendors. The 2-in-1 capability "just plain works" and provides a variety of options in how to use this device. Display The touch enabled 15 inch display is a 3:2 aspect ratio with a native resolution of 3240x2160, pleasing to the eyes, and a joy to use. It gets plenty bright and the touch response works as expected. Input devices The 3-stage back-lit keyboard is fantastic and has just the right amount of travel to be comfortable to type on for long periods. The touchpad uses Microsoft Precision drivers and is the best Windows touchpad I have used to date. It is on par with the fabled Mac touchpad, though I wish it was just a tad bit larger. Audio The speakers are fairly good for a laptop of this size. They fire from cutouts on the side of the display and have good separation. Bass isn't the best, but they are clear and comfortable. Not as good as the recent MacBook's, but still quite capable. Performance 8th gen Intel-U processors are a significant upgrade from the 7th generation in that they added 2 more cores making it a true quad core processor. The 25watt i7 processor in the Surface Book 2 15 inch is on par with a 45watt 7th gen Intel quad core processor from a performance perspective. The main difference is that there may be some throttling during extended loads, but the performance will still be equivalent for the vast majority of people. The Nvidia 1060 dedicated graphics allow most games to be played at medium/high detail at 1920x1080p. I generally play League of Legends and Overwatch and both perform well. As League is an older title, I am able to play that at high detail on my 35 inch Dell ultrawide monitor's native resolution at over 100fps. Glorious! Battery Life Battery life is excellent due to the large battery in the base as well as the usage of a lower watt 8th gen "U" processor that uses less power than the 7th gen HQ processors. Standard work use comprising of Chrome web browsing and Office 365 apps saw me get an amazing 13 hours of use. It does chug battery when the dedicated graphics are being used, but that is the same of every laptop. Coming from my 2017 MacBook Pro 15, the battery life has been significantly better than the 6 hours I typically get with the MacBook. There have been reports of the Surface Book 2 15 inch draining battery even when plugged in while gaming, but I have not experienced this. Tablet only mode lasts 3-5 hours based on what you are doing. Webcam It has a 5.0mp front facing camera and the image quality is excellent. By far the best I have seen on any laptop, including Mac's. There is an 8.0mp rear facing camera that also works very well (but please do not be that person holding up a tablet at a concert to take a picture). For taking pictures of whiteboards or slides at a conference, it does the job very well. Heat & Fans Heat is well managed as are the fans when really pushing the device. It makes a soft whooshing noise at maximum and is not at all obnoxious. OS/Bloatware The device does not ship with any bloatware, which is a great thing. It is a standard Windows 10 Pro install, but it strangely does not ship with fall creator's update already installed.

Not the best for digital artist

      Posted
      JonquelN

Product Has Serious Overheating issue! First let me say that I've done all the research, I watched youtube, read magazine reviews and spoke with every Best Buy Agent I could. I'm a digital artist, I use mainly Adobe products and I was in the market to find 2 in 1 that work support my art on the go. Of course I thought about getting a Mac because it's industry standard (I now understand why), but I really wanted a 2-1 option. I was looking for something I could draw on and use full programs (as tablets only use apps). So I went to Best Buy and spoke with an agent, told them what I was looking for and they recommended the Surface Book 2. I went home did some research and thought it was a good choice. I even went to 3 different Best Buys in my city and every agent I spoke to assured me that this machine could handle photoshop and was worth the price tag. So I went for it and purchased this very Expensive "Premium" machine. It's been 1 MONTH and it's unusable for me. This computer gets so overheated I can't even draw on it. In the short time I've had it ,I've only been able to complete 1 illustration and I had to wear a scarf over my hand to it. 5 minutes into running Photoshop the tablet starts to get hot, then the base gets hot. This is honestly the last problem I would expect to have from a machine that is nearly (or more than) $3k. I wanted to do digital art tutorials and videos with this computer, but I can't even do simple illustrations in Adobe without this problem. I'm also an influencer on social media and I can not in good confidence recommend this computer to my audience. I'm so disappointed with the performance of this machine and if it wasn't for best buy's 15 day return policy, it would have been back in store on day 19! I hope this review helps another digital artist before they put alot of money down on this machine.

I’ve had this computer for about 6 months, and I can easily say that the 15” Surface Book 2 is the best computer I have ever owned. Every computer has tradeoffs, but those made here are minor, and it is well worth the price for the combination of performance and features. There are more powerful machines out there, but this close to the top for laptops - and those small differences become meaningless when you consider the unrivaled pen/touch support. This is an aritists dream with excellent drawing abilities and pressure/tilt sensitivity, and a great mobile graphics card. I’d highly recommend dowbloading “Tablet Pro” for extra features if you are going to do digital art here. Gaming performance is also great due to the aforementioned graphics card, despite this computer not being marketed as a gaming machine - and it DOES support VR, with some minor caveats: in short, if you want VR, get a Mixed Reality headset (Samsung Odyssey recommended, though any work), and you can use both Steam VR and Oculus software with it (with the Mixed Reality Steam VR add-on, and Remixed from Revive for Oculus software support). Rift won’t set up without trickery, and Vive works but doesn’t perform well under most circumstances - but Mixed Reality works near flawlessly for VR with this computer. As an aside, another benefit for gaming: wireless Xbox controllers work out of the box - no adapters or trickery needed, just add them as you would any wireless device - so, if you have an Xbox One, you already have game controllers for this computer. In short: if you have the money, this is a highly recommend computer for anything you want to do.

First off I do love PCs and I have an older surface book. It had issues with the keyboard randomly stop working but I dealt with it in hoping Microsoft could fix this with the new one. Well that’s the ONLY thing they got right. Pros: Bigger more beautiful screen Cons 1. 8th gen i7 overheats to 100 Celsius so fast!! If people actually monitored the cpu they will notice huge throttling and high temps taking place 2. It has frozen several times from the monitor turning off, not going to sleep. I have to hard restart it plus the back of the screen is melting hot and I get the temp icon on restart stating it had over heated! 3. I’m a professional photographer and I use professional software like photoshop and capture one. I can 100% say that MacBook Pro is faster and much more responsive in both of these softwares. It takes longer to load previews in capture one and longer to process and open the apps. For a company stated they are trying to get the artist community then they are not listening to a lot of them. If you are a drawer or painter then sure it’s good for that, but NOT photography. It is so much slower when compared to a Mac. Sorry. Finally I will say again I use desktop PC and I really wanted to leave MAC behind on the laptop world for my photography but I just don’t see that happening right now

This is by far the best laptop i have ever had. i previously had a mac which was nice but the surface book 2 is the absolute best laptop for a student. I recommend u buy the pen because you practically need it. I use this laptop mainly for school, most of my lectures are on powerpoint and i just fold the screen so that i can take my notes by writing directly on the screen! It makes my life so much easier and i haven't used a single piece of paper since i bought this. The i7 processor is extremely fast and this laptop is yet to slow down on me. I have nothing negative to say regarding this laptop. My favorite feature is that you can remove the screen and not even need to have the keyboard. Also it packs two separate batteries so its battery life is phenomenal. The screen has a battery and the keyboard has another battery so it actually charges to 200 percent! I love this thing!

I've had my Surface Book 2 for about 3 weeks now. I waited when the first Surface Book came out, because while I liked the design & features, I always prefer to avoid 1st generation designs...... And let me tell you, it was worth the wait! Not only did Microsoft do an excellent job addressing most of the flaws in the 1st generation design, but they also built a machine that can be used for many hours, doing the most demanding tasks, on battery alone. In fact when attached to the base, my new Surface Book 2 is more powerful than any of the MacBook Pro's that several of my friends own, or even the gaming desktops that they have. Yes, it's expensive, but it's worth it.

The laptop has a bit of power, speed, it's lightweight.....It's great! You do have to be careful about where you lie it. Because it's so light, I can see it easily being damaged if you bump the casing against a hard panel. So getting the Geek Squad protection plan is a must!! The only reason I returned mine is because, after three days of having it, I really, really want the 1TB version instead. It's currently sold out, so I'm waiting until it comes back in stock before I make my move! If you're okay with a 512GB over having a 1TB, this is a great computer to have. I can see myself not needing to buy a new one for quite some years to come (once I have my 1TB).

I'm a mac fan to the core, so going back to windows has been a chore for me. I switched because of the lack of touchscreen support on the Mac line, something that matters for my workflow. This device has some serious chops for video editing and graphic design, and while I hate the fact that the hinge doesn't close flush and leaves a gap when the unit is folded closed, the reversible monitor is much nicer than a wrap-around design that leaves the keyboard face-down on desktops for tablet mode, and the keyboard & mouse handle quite comparably to what I"m used to with my macbook pro.
