I'm not a tech guy, so this review is only about my feelings about the functionality of the device. If you want to set your Surface up in a desktop arrangement, this is a must-have item. It gives you 4 usb ports, an audio output jack for your speakers, 2 video ports for your monitor(s) (you'll need an adapter); and it does all of that completely behind the scenes. There's also an Ethernet port if you don't want to connect via WiFi. The only connection to the Surface is a cable that connects in the same place as the charger that comes with the Surface. Note: even with the Surface connected to the dock, the integrated usb port on the computer remains functional for a total of 5 ports to connect and/or charge other devices.. Physically it's fairly small and unobtrusive, but heavy enough to stay in place wherever you put it. The power cord is long enough for any reasonable desk arrangement -- I keep the entire unit on a shelf under the desk and only the connector cable is visible. Expensive, but I'm happy with it. Like most things that work perfectly out of the box, the price doesn't hurt as much as it would if it was ineffective or inefficient.

First off, whew! I was so wary of getting the dock because of all the issues but I'm happy to say its working superbly and has improved by workflow. Really, if you own a Surface Pro 3 or 4 and don't have this yet, then you are missing out on the added expandability. I use this at my office work in the morning and disconnect at the end of the day. By that, I was able to do away with my desk top computer at my office just because of this purchase. Believe it or not, the best thing I love about it is just one magnetic connection that I can click onto the Surface Pro 4, then I will have many things that connected to my Surface Pro 4 in 2 seconds. My setup: Surface Pro 4 connected to: 1- 3 monitors 720, 1080 and 4K via mini HDMI 2- Audio output: now I can connect my Bose Component Speaker System and enjoy all my music. 3- Ethernet directly. 4- Wireless keyboard and mouse. 5- 2 T Hard Drive. 6- Microphone. 7- 2 Extended USB 3.0 and C. 8- Headset. I'm able to connect those without any issues, takes at most 3 seconds to recognize the three external monitors and the other devices. Now able to move my surface around my desk because I write a lot via OneNote, Programming in Visual Studio and do tablet-y things like Photoshop and video editing, while still retaining my desktop workflow. I am quite happy to no longer need to hook up to the devices, the Display Port, and drag my power adapter too, and from now, it is just one magnetic cable that convert my tablet to desktop. Overall I would say it should save me a lot of my time and make my works more professional.

Very disappointed. If you are purchasing this to hook up 2 external monitors it does not seem possible at this time. Hooking up only 1 monitor seems to work fine but connecting the 2nd causes only the surface pro's screen to display and it just flickers randomly. I am forced to unplug/plug back in the monitor cables in a specific sequence and "sometimes" I can get both monitors displaying. This remains stable only until the surface you powers down or goes in sleep mode. Then it's rinse/repeat to try to get them up and displaying again. I have also found other users online have been experiencing this also (i.e via amazon reviews). Also, it appears the audio jack only supports 2.0 stereo atm. Microsoft Support also verified this. I have a 2.1 Klipsch system so my subwoofer is useless with this dock. For now I just bypass the dock and plug the audio jack into the Surface Pro itself. I may return this and purchase the older surface pro docking station if both of these issues are not rectified soon.

surface dock still a work in progress

I bought this dock to use with a Surface Laptop and Samsung HD monitor (U28E590D) and have experienced some challenging issues that Microsoft has yet to fix. The first one that can be addressed is only certain cables will allow you to achieve the HD resolution. There is a recommended list on Microsoft's site. Second, the dock interferes with the laptop's wireless internet connection. It works fine on the laptop when used on a standalone basis and then as soon as you plug it into the dock the signal is either very weak or you cannot connect at all. The third is that the dock is incompatible with a large list of monitors, including mine. The way this made its appearance for me was that the monitor would never sleep when the computer slept, it just kept flashing on and off. This issue did not happen when plugging the monitor directly into the laptop, bypassing the dock. Microsoft tried to troubleshoot the dock to no avail and replaced it, but the replacement had the same issues. Microsoft has some work to do to make the dock a viable product.

The concept of taking a laptop to work and plugging it into a single port that charges connects to your monitors keyboard mouse Ethernet and audio jack seemed like a dream come true. Sadly this dream turns into more of a nightmare in execution. The setupI have the dock connected to a mouse keyboard Ethernet headphones and two 1920x1080 displays. updated to the latest firmware using the Surface Dock update toolSurface Laptop & Pro 4When I connect it to the Surface laptop the screens will flicker and then go black no input. I have to restart the Surface laptop for it to recognize the screens. Sometimes I have to restart the Surface laptop several times for it to show on the monitors. Other times I have to unplug and replug in the dock for the monitors to work. When using my Surface Pro 4 I have the same screen flickering restart computer and unplug-replug in the dock in order for it to work. The dock is amazing when it works. Sadly this is all too little

When I purchased the MicroSoft Surface Dock, the Best Buy clerk told me that the dock would enable me to use my iMac screen to project the information from my Surface Pro 5 so that I would have a desktop setup at my home office. After having researched for hours to see what type of connecting cable I would need and making numerous inquiry calls, I have discovered that, unfortunately, this is not the case. About 90% of those with whom I spoke AFTER the purchase told me that in no way would a MicroSoft product and an Apple be compatible. Now, I'm having to purchase a monitor and adapter cable to be able to use my Surface Pro as a desktop at home. I'm not so sure that I would have gone this route had I known the whole story. I'm not disappointed in the product itself (because I haven't actually been able to use it), but rather in the misinformation that I was given by someone at Best Buy selling the product. So...just know that this CANNOT be used with an iMac.

Better USB ports than on Surface Book

I got this because I knew I would need an extra USB port for a printer that had to be setup via cable. It turned out to be a one of the best accessories and I find myself using it more than I thought I would have because it has features I was not aware of : - It is a power cord itself and is a longer cord than the original one supplied with the SurfaceBook. This is valuable for times when you must charge your battery but need a little extra distance to an outlet! - The USB ports are safer to use than on the Surface Book itself. By this I mean that the USB ports on my book are tight and to eject a USB cable takes some umph; on most desktop surfaces if the laptop is not braced just so with the other hand it will go flying (slide) off the desk when you remove a flash drive or iPhone cable. I much prefer to use the dock where plugging in/out is a no brainer and will not potentially harm my laptop. Dock has other ports for uses besides the USB but I have not used them so I cannot comment on that functionality.

Firstly, do NOT buy the open box listing for the surface dock... at least, in my case, it didn't come with the power cord. What the heck? I asked customer service and they said "Oh yeah, the open box version only has the dock." Hello, you need the power adapter to supply the dock! It is a proprietary power supply and is used solely by the dock itself. Anyway, the actual dock is fine. I find it very convenient to have the magnetic surface connect mechanism. My dock supports 4K output on a single monitor only, and I have to use a mini-display adapter, it won't work with HDMI (certainly not with the HDMI connector that I have). So, the dock is pretty buggy with outputting video to your monitor, and a lot of people have problems with dual display output (especially 4K). The USB and Ethernet is fine. The dock also powers your device, which is great. Overall, it gets the job done, especially if you only have one external monitor. It is convenient as a docking workstation solution.
