Fantastic Laptop with Crucial Software Flaws

When finding a laptop for work I needed the following boxes checked: beautiful and accurate display, keyboard with good comfortable travel, track-pad like a mac, powerful but lightweight enough for video editing on the go. Ultimately it came down to this (Microsoft Surface Laptop w/ i7) and a 13" Macbook Pro. After going into the store regularly, playing with each, and reading countless reviews of the two I ended up siding with the Surface Laptop. I saw theverge.com's recommendation as best laptop for most people and at the same time Consumer Reports come out and say they can't recommend them. I have had mostly Macbooks in the past as, for my personal needs, there's never been a windows laptop that made sense for me. After having the Surface Laptop for a little over two months now there is so much I love about the device and things that infuriate me. I love this mostly for the hardware, the display is beautiful, the speakers are rich and loud, the keyboard and track-pad on top of the Alcantara Fabric feels wonderful (although I am a sweaty man and I do wonder of the lasting quality of it), the lightweight but durable casing of the laptop, and the head-turning design. I love how this laptop looks and feels. It's different and stands out in a beautiful way. If this machine was running OSX I would love it, which brings me to what I don't like about this laptop. First let me say that Microsoft is ridiculous for shipping any of the Surface Laptops with WIndows 10 S. This seems like something that should be on their entry-level Surface Pro and other low-powered devices. Luckily you can upgrade to 10 Pro for free and you really should. I am constantly using adobe products like Premiere and Photoshop for my job. The reason I almost returned this device and bought a Macbook was because the display dims when dark applications or pages are detected on screen and brightens up to the actual brightness when you go back to lighter pages. It's not a small amount of dimming either, it is noticeable and when using this laptop in a bright area and you open Adobe Premiere which is a dark-themed app, the display becomes almost unusable even at 100% brightness and not in battery saver mode. This is a "feature" used to extend battery life and cannot be turned off despite me turning off the "Adaptive Display Brightness" feature in setting. If you are going to be using this as your primary driver using any dark software, save yourself some sanity and buy a Macbook Pro. The only way to counteract this is to plug the laptop in, so now I have to bring my charger with me everywhere I go if I need to get work done. I'm an adult and can make my own decisions. Windows thinks otherwise. I use Chrome as my browser as I have an android phone and tablet. It makes life easier to use one browser across all devices. Windows keeps reminding me in their notifications that I could have much better battery life and user experience if I switch to Microsoft Edge. Possibly, but not now. So I deleted the Tips app on the computer so it would stop sending me such "tips." I continue to receive the same tips. Apparently I should also be reminded weekly to insure my laptop through Microsoft. Thanks for the tips. My last problem is sleep/wake when opening and closing the laptop. I cannot trust it to keep my work when I re-open my laptop. I have lost many documents and work to working on something, closing the lid, opening the lid later and the computer having to restart losing my work. Because of way too much lost work between this laptop Office 365's horrendous offline mode I have completely switched over to the google suite for any productivity work. Overall I want to love this computer and I do for the most part, but I can't say I recommend it for any (and I hate using this word but...) creatives unless you're OK carrying around a charger with you and plugging it in whenever you're using it. I'm interested to see gen 2 of this device, but if they don't fix this screen issue I'm just going back to the Macbook Pro. Pros: Brilliant Display Loud, Excellent Speakers Overall Build Quality Powerhouse Best Keyboard and Track-pad on a Windows Laptop Cons: Windows 10 S Adaptive Screen Dimming Windows 10 Notifications Unreliable Sleep Mode

This was initially a computer purchased by mistake. I was really looking for a Surface Pro 4 tablet for a new hire where I work. (That's been our corporate standard for a little while now.) The Best Buy salesperson grabbed me the wrong box, and I didn't notice before I got back to the office with it. But I realized this Surface laptop had identical specs to the Surface Pro 4 I was trying to buy and was so similar, it used the same docking station and AC adapter. So I wound up trying it as MY computer and gave my Surface Pro 4 to the new person. Really, this *is* a Surface Pro 4 except put into a traditional notebook case. That means you get a real keyboard and trackpad instead of that keyboard cover (which is flimsy and makes it hard to type with the computer in your lap, and not on a solid surface like a table or desk). It has very good performance and a sharp, high resolution 4K display, plus good battery life (lasts at least 5 hours or so in "real world" use). About my only criticisms of this machine are the lack of an SD card reader slot (I mean, seriously? Not even a small slot for MicroSD cards?), and the way its price jumps WAY up for configurations with a 512GB SSD in them. I really wanted this with 512GB of storage but that priced it out of the range of what we're willing to pay for new notebooks.

I was so impressed with my sons surface for the last year and easy it was for him to complete his college work that I wanted one for myself. Problem was that I "had" a Mac Air Notebook. Recently had to work on a software problem for my work and was told that it couldn't be done on any Mac. Enough siad, bought the new Surface and haven't looked back since. Love this computer - fast smart and easier to use than that Mac..

I loved the size, color and weight of the laptop. I was not impressed with the hp system. I was having trouble downloading apps onto the laptop. It said i could not download Google Chrome because it was not in the app store. It stated that I could download it a different way but every time I clicked that button it kicked me out completely. Therefore I found the computer tough to use.

I love this laptop! Light, super fast, (8gb ram) but faster than the surface pro 4. This is the fastest and lightest laptop I ever owned!! (I've had many hp's)! So, consumer reports says it may break! How do they know? It just came out! I had my surface pro 4 for 2 years and it was fine ne, but this is amazing!! I recommend to all! Buy a cover to give it protection since it is yhin. Common sense guys!

My wife and I bought this computer for our Grandson who just graduated from High School. He will be starting his Engineering degrees this fall and we wanted to get him a real high power computer that would last the 4-5 years he's in college. He's also a big time gamer so we knew he would be pleased and he was. He is very happy with this computer and with us!

Things I love: - Light weight - facial recognition - material around key pad (nice addition) - Super easy set up Only concern - the first “update” made the facial recognition not work. But I was able to get on with Microsoft CS and they were able to get that resolved quickly.

This laptop performs excellent and has many features that are better than it's competitor (Apple.) MS is providing more features and cutting edge performance and charging less for the name imho. I love change and cutting edge design that isn't afraid to go outside the box. In particular the soft style keyboard is an excellent example.
